Watch: Indonesian Motorcycle Diaries // Episode Two - The Wild West
From Bali, traveling surfer/journo Tom De Souza travels east into the Lesser Sunda Islands, stopping on a west-facing coast to wait for swell and chat to new locals - expat and otherwise.
Some of those Tom interviews have relocated from overseas, others from within Indonesia, drawn by the promise of work and a chance to see more of their varied country.
Tom also gets a chance to grip the rail of his Banksy twin fin on a spiralling left.

Beautiful stuff, so well-structured and choregraphed. I struggled with the amount of drone footage from Torren and Ishka, but comparatively this gets raw and in there, so you actually feel it! This stuff is sooo good SN. Keep em coming.
Sumbawa has never appealed to me for some reason but after watching this and then a bunch of other Supersuck videos I am not really sure why. Great looking wave.
Pretty fickle coast.
Often it turns on only four an hour or two then stops.
Watched crew paddle out to fun looking Scars only for the tap to turn off by the time they were in the line up.
Paddled in without even catching a wave.
shallow as f and crowded as well......
Your not wrong, when my son was there he said people had wetties on as protection and once you are locked in there is no way of getting off. Also he said it had just started to work and a heap of boats turned up and ended up being super crowded.
yeah my thoughts too, plus you need a big swell for it to actually break
Good stuff....
Got to love Indo!
"I'm an animal lover" said moments after slamming a chickens foot with a machete.
Other than that piece of comedy gold, it was a cool vid.
Well told story, although not a fan of mouth go pro footage ( or surfing with users of them ) but otherwise pretty cool .
Thought supers was crowded in the early 90,s....
No expats there then that's for sure , couple losemen, a gnarly road in and a mining camp and that was it.
I'd like to hear the story behind Tom's Da Claw Precison Equip hoodie too ,only a few of them around.
Happy travels
Bought from him two weeks before he died.
Profile on him ran in Tracks just a couple days before.
Never knew if the old boy got to read it or not.
Epic , he would be stoked to be represented on the adventure I'm sure .
Ride on!
That was good, god miss Indo...
Another great little video i think this guys captures the true Indo in every sense, the people, the scenery, the vibe its 100% real and authentic.
I love it how he provides an insight into the locals be it the local Indonesian tukang's (tradies) or expats, its the people that play a big part in making a place what it is as are the stories they have to tell, i love it how he showed the expat's in this one, there a lot of people in Indo like that couple and even Julie (weirdly enough I know an Aussie women of similar age like her called Julie in Sumatra)
I like it how he also shows the down sides too, Julie explaining how some days she wants to go home, the back rim of the bike, or just the inconsistency of a spot like this, a lot of Indo is about waiting and down time and dealing with challenges, one moment you can have the best day of your life, next day, you are going crazy wondering why you are even there.
And then finishing with the waves its what we all go for but in a weird way is really just the icing on the cake.
For me both little videos have been a 9/10, in every way content, presentation, filming, even the length is perfect, not to short not too long and if he keeps producing them would be great to watch as a series.
Spot on mate. I get a little nostalgic watching these, Alby Mangels vibe or soemthing.
Ha ha yeah loved Alby Mangles as a kid but this is missing the foxy chicks in bikinis and Alby did stage a few things.
Hahaha ripper! Thanks Indo.
Someone also once told me that Indo is a place where losers go to feel successful. They may be a disgrace back at home, so they run away to paradise where they can be treated like a king.
Just out of interest, what do you reckon it needs to take it to 10/10?
I only held off giving a 10 just so incase future episodes are somehow better, need to leave a little wiggle room. :D
haha, yup, 9/10, cause I want the next ones to be just as cool, but maybe they will make me laugh out loud or cry or something.. standard scoring technique.
Could have included a line of haul trucks creeping over a distant ridge as the sun goes down in that last drone shot for a touch of dread and grotesque.
if i give the first two vids 11/10 then does that average out at 10/10? Loving your work Tom
Nice tube riding Tom. I just cant get my head around back hand tube riding. Really suck at it
Loved the depiction of everyday people and expats. The waves looked nice but obviously very fickle and crowded when good. Great to see the ordinary way of life and their determination to make a go of things.
That was just totally awesome, I'm with Indo - 9/10 for both vids so far. I'm really looking forward to the rest!
I was lucky enough to go spend time in Indo 30 odd years ago. That was well before any sort of crowds or development and you generally surfed alone or with one or two mates.
It's amazing how the place has changed now and knowing there's still some uncrowded (not in this vid unfortunately) waves to be found satisfies something in my soul. Seek and you will be rewarded.
Next one.
Stay tuned.
love both vids, hows the banksy go ???
Unreal. Can’t fault it.
I’ve never really liked twin fins for their lack of drive and hold but this feels almost nothing like a twinny, only in the speed it generates.
Banksy was right when he said I should take a 6’5, full one board quiver.
inspired me to get a Banksy , went the Ultra Glide..love it ..thanks
Did you film ur trip 30 years ago and post it for the masses mad dog? Glory hounds could you pls give it a rest.
Big fan of this series so far. Especially hearing from the Indos. Well done.
No news is good news? Hopefully scoring!
Very keen to see episode three!
Yeah it's coming. Few more on the burn. Have spent the last few months getting home and trying to remould my life to fit back into normal society. It's got knobs on it, I tell ya.
Beauty! Looking forward to it.
Best of luck with the remoulding too!
