Watch: The Right Returns
It's been a long time between sessions at The Right.
Arguably, the last proper session was two years ago, perhaps even three years depending on who you ask. Time is one way to quantify how long it's been, while another way is to count the number of aborted missions since the last proper swell. On that score, Zac Haynes is winning with five aborted trips.
And the reason it's been running so cool?
The last three years of La Nina has largely seen low pressure systems riding high in the storm track as they approach the continent from the west. The result is shorter period swell and/or swells ruined by wind - meaning the swell hasn't moved beyond the wind field that produced it. Neither scenario benefits the deepwater reefs off southern WA.
In recent months the storm track has shifted south, giving space for swell periods to stretch out, and also move beyond the wind field that created them. The result has been a dramatic change of fortune in Victoria and late last week it was West Australia's turn.
This video, shot by Chris White with drone footage by Cian Salmon, features a bunch of names we haven't seen for a while: Zac, Jake Osman, Ben Rufus, Shanan Worrall, and others.
By Whitey's own admission it was only B-grade Right, but it was a welcome re-introduction to Australia's most fearsome wave.
Comments
They have the whip in from behind the peak wired. Impressive “B-grade” material.
Sick one Whitey!
Great footage.
Cheers.
More of this & less of people getting whipped into paddle crowds please.
Great, but got annoyed when they started showing the Drone footage, and then just as the curtain was about to come down, they switched to the water view.
Would be good to see the ride in full from both perspectives.
Agreed. That could have shown the complete wave from whip in to pull out from every angle and it still would have only been a five minute vid, but much better. See Nate Florence, RawBeef, SOB etc.
I know that's pretty crazy stuff but I just can't get excited about watching tow surfing.
Fuck yeah !! super happy I've discovered the "swell net" Tube channel, can watch all this on he big screen , yew
Im greedy and bored so I want the swell back on the east coast its hard to give it up after 3 years
and now its small to flat and uninspiring
That clip was better than the majority of the WSL broadcast combined for 2023
Who is the hairy sasquatch-like style master double arm dragging through a cavern while the wind combs back his long locks and the world explodes around him at 1:10? Classic WA wild man!
Walt Whitman would have a field day.
Ben Rufus...rips
With Board and Planer.
Where’s the music credits. How Fkn hard is it. Poor form Swellnet.
The XX - Intro
Not bad for a B grade day. Good warm up for the boys
Fuck the La Niña and your poofy east coast points my grandma could boogie board
Haha only half kidding
Love seeing this joint and Shipsterns
Takes some balls to ride waves like that
It’s 2023 yeah?
Yea mate, 20s period decent size swell too. Same swell cranked up speedies and Ulu Bombie two days later.
I was just calling out the homophobic humour style employed above
Had feeling there was something going on out there... enjoying the vision fellas.
Yeah sorry
but we are a few years behind over here
Second last surfer is the ex apprentice. Yeah Sam!
Horses for courses! hate jetskis when used in paddle in waves butt in a wave like The Right they come into there own. The boys all have big tickers taking this slab on! looks like you really couldn't paddle in to this beast!
