Merrick x Campbell - video
Britt Merrick and Malcolm Campbell share a lot of design DNA. In 1970, Malcolm, along with his brother Duncan, invented the Bonzer while growing up in Ventura, California, while just up the highway Britt's old man, Al Merrick, was learning his chops. Al, of course, would go on to found Channel Island Surfboards, who counted Malcolm Campbell among their shapers for many years.
While Al was at the helm, Channel Islands was largely a performance based label. Conversely, the Campbell Brothers occupied real estate best termed 'alternative surf craft'. Yet in this age of overlapping narratives it's no surprise that the two would collaborate - hell, it even makes sense.
So here we have the Bonzer Biscuit, which, as the name implies, is the ever popular CI Biscuit with a 5 fin Bonzer under the hood. Allow Britt and Mal to explain.
Postscript: It's often stated that the Bonzer was the first three fin surfboard. It's a contentious claim. Stay tuned to Swellnet for an article on early three fins surfboards.

looks like they go nice through the water even in little stuff
They do.
Try one.
I have a 6'10" bonzer 5 with glassed on fins all round shaped for me by Chris Garrett (Phantom). Even on a longer board the system works amazingly well. My friends think I'm a fool that should get with the program and ride a thruster. Don't knock it until you try it I say.
All the positives of a single fin (flow, speed) with some extra bite and drive when you need some. I love it!
Great vid. Good explanation of fin base length, lack of fin height & vee working together.
Always loved vee bottoms.
Check out Jye Byrnes surfboards website. I spoke to him last November at his factory about a 7' Bonzer 5 for this 62 year old surfer. Can then check that off the bucket list: Surfed and owned 15 Single fins (one Paddy Morgan keel), one Twinnie, Dozen + Thrusters, one Turbo Webber Quad, one Super Twin, and one Bonzer 5(winter 2017)
