Undergound heroes

Every surf community has them. They rip. They rip big time. But no accolades, no hype, no sponsors, just memories scarred into fellow surfers minds of these guys catching and tearing "your local" apart. They are usually humble, friendly characters.
In a "music sense", they are the "Minor threats", the "Where's the pope's", "Depression". Some even got a bit of airplay like "Cosmic Psychos"....
My underground hero would have to be "Spart", short for Sparticus... One of my best mates for life.... Taught me so much back in the 90s... With his guidance, I went from an "intermediate surfer" to a charger capable of holding my own, and even turning a few heads at our boardriders in Coolum..... A hard marker, no compliments. Always pretended he didn't see that "off the lip", be he did :). At 6 foot3, (I'm 6.1), he showed me how to rip small stuff, and not do that stupid "hop". I won't share his tip, one of the best small wave/ big man tips I've ever had.
And could the guy rip...... Fuck could he rip....... Was not on 1, not 2 , but 3 tracks covers in the 70/80s, all at Anga'. Surfed 12 -15foot Sunset in the pro class trials as a teenager...... Beat Ratso Buchanan for the Kiwi open..... A freekn legend in NZ....
One massive swell at Point Perry Coolum, he just put everyone to the sword, never forget that day, He owned Cyclonic ti tree, Platforms.
He had a massive heart attack a couple of years back. Artery so collapsed they couldn't put a stent in. No more surfing.......... Still fixes boards up on the hill at Coolum. Still has a laugh......
Greg "Spart" Rhodes, you're my undergound hero,,,, "boy".... Miss ya Bro'.

I love uplifts rants after 4.00pm when he's been drinking for at least 2 hours... It's like bold and the beautiful, home and away, and Australia's biggest loser all wrapped into one neat little package . His pre 2.00pm posts I just ignore. One stubby every every 20 minutes = "6 pack gold".....
The handsome chiseled looks of "Ridge Forrester", the sub standard script and acting of Summer Bay, and the banal macabre voyerism of a get fit reality tv show....
It's a beautiful thing, narcissism meets fantasy in a self indulgent bulimic convulsion.....
I love the "Stair dodgers" work.
Funny thing is, the stair dodger , the one who goes up lifts, well he and I know eachother.... He just hasn't figured it out yet..... Here's a video we made ages ago, in our youth. Ahh the sheepdog and stairdodger in the good old days.....

Well mate another legend on the sunny coast is "stumpy' Wallace. Peter...... Shaped some good boards for me... ......
Hang on.... What's that stench..... Smells like it's comin' from the stairwell... Ahh it's just uplifts breath and his neverending verbal runs about himself. Loves to jump into noble threads like he did here at 8.28pm on thursday and waffle on about Adelaide crows "fitness" just cos' brute boy baited him.... What the fuck that had anything to do with "undergound heroes" has got me fucked. So he's the first bloke in over 100 comments to take the subject off tangent, and then has a whinge that it's gone off tangent. Classic.....
Mate, we're all not as stupid as you. Start the fire and point the finger ya dick.....
Anyway, "Undergound heroes" - 153 comments in 4 days, minus uplifts input, still best part of 150 comments... in 4 days

Yeh he did camster. He could surf, but was a sleezy, shifty little prick. Would seem all right at first, but figured because he could surf, he could do what he liked. An underground hero. Reece and I surfed with him first in some solid waves, and he looked /surfed a bit like Tom Carroll. But, he tried ripping everyone off, up and down the whole coast. Eventually he had to leave the whole area. He owed money and shit left right and centre. He was a seriously wanted, sponging little shit everywhere as he fled back to Sydney. But fuck, we got heaps of them back then. I used to see tons of them when I was running the park. Always an almost identical story. 'Bin up the NW I have, big tombies eh.' 'Surfed margs bombie on me way round south, I done, big eh' 'Ad farkin gillos good last year eh... wouldn't ave a durry would ya maaaayyyyteee, score a bit a wax orf ya maaaayyyytteeee... aven't gort a farkin spare leggy ave ya maaaaaaayyyyteee.' What they really wanted to say was, 'I'm here to show yas all how good I am'. If you'd just finished mowing lawns and emptying septics with a shovel all day, it was all you could do to stop from stuffing them down a crack in the limestone. Someone would do it eventually though.

I have to put in Garth Dickensen. I watched him when I was younger, I didnt understand what I was actually seeing until about 10 years later, really liked the rail work. Had a sik line into the tube. Turned up to sensitive areas without cameras and blogs. At least 2 things pros cant do today...................

I like Neal Purchase Jnr/Margo. Carve and tubes. I have an outstanding issue with NPJ though. Ive got an old video, theres a scene where he's on a little surf mission somewhere, looking very jungle and lush, they must of run out of petrol. It shows him chucking the empty little fuel can into the bush/river. It was sort of a dolphin/nature surfing style type of video too. Doesnt sit with his image, and deducts points off backhand tubes for life............

I know what your saying hem-stret, there is nothing more annoying than watching one of your favourite underground surfers videos and the character he plays is out of context with his many other videos and the image that I have been fed by various surf magazines.

This is an interesting read as some of you guys have blurred the line on what is underground, to me an underground surfer just does it cause he loves surfing and would cringe at the thought of promoting himself.

Wayne Lynch was the forefather of the commercial underground maverick, a world title and several movies under his belt he becomes a hippie and turns his back on the surfing media, occasionally popping up in an american surfing magazine for a travel brochure of the 12 apostles to top up the bank account.
There was countless ex-pro's after Wayne that made a bit of pocket money from turning their back on the media and writing an autobiography, but it was Rasta who took it to a new level. He couldn't quite make it to the elite level and was losing sponsors, so in preference to working for a living he reinvented himself and pulled off the best piece of wank I have ever seen in surfing, getting sponsored not to go in competitions. A fucken brilliant move, when he has a bad surf it is not in a heat for all the world to see in a contest that is on a webcast. Now all the bad waves go in the bin, only the best make it onto you tube.

That was a good read, shaun.... Cheers. Coudn't agree more re' Rasta......Got me thinkn' about 2 other blokes... Exact opposite of eachother.... Chris Davidson - a wild man shit hot surfer who started his journey as an "underground hero" all those years ago at Bells v Kelly, who has ended up a "respected professional"
Then there's Nick Wood... Started off as a teenage sponsors dream, MR protege, and ended up as the "bad guy".
Matt Hoy and Shane Herring also come to mind......

Surely Roger Matthews deserves an honorable mention here , he was back-dooring 8ft+ slabs at Blacks in the early 80s when most of the heroes were farting around on the shoulder, he is about 54 now and still keener than most groms and still rips. Even though he has a room full of trophies from 40 years of state and national titles his act was so smooth and he made it look so easy that it went over many judges heads resulting in many rip offs. I'm calling that he has clocked up more tube time than any other South Aust. in the history of surfing.

My definition of an underground surfer is "For the love of surf, nothing more, nothing less with a 'natural born' ability" and has NEVER entered a surf comp or had a photo enter a publication - with the exception of a pic finding its way unsolicited. I could use the colloquial too - against the mainstream, of which in this context is any kind of promotion or reward for personal gain.

My definition removes many names from this list, even one I listed myself.

Shaun, your on the money with many of the new breed "soul" surfers. Donovan needs to be included on that list too. Soul my arse, when ya getting a pay check with fringe benefits, all bragging rights to being underground are lost.

" Self proclaimed Heroes . One Bourne every day . "

Now i'm sure we could get a few of you literary genius's to better this ,
and while your at it you may as well fit in as the script writer ....... or we could just make shit up ...

I've got an "anti hero" hehehe. A bloke everyone used to call "munya". Alan was his real name. He'd have to be dead now... No doubt..... A dead set psychopath lunatic..... I was "lucky" enough to be invited by him and his boat owning mate to go out and surf the Great barrier reef. I was about 17. These blokes were in their mid 20s..... I felt safer once in the water with the live coral and reef sharks than I did on the boat..... A dead set psychopath, take off on anything, laugh like a madman when bleeding profusely, could go from wanting to crush your skull to a friendly rugby spear tackle in the blink of an eye.....
Grommets these days just don't know what they're missing.......

Owen Wright. Brett Hodge. Even Flex. Its all about leverage.

Sheepdog's picture
Sheepdog's picture
Sheepdog Friday, 21 Mar 2014 at 6:48pm

Sid fishious..... I know flex... surfed with him heaps... He's a midget ball of muscle... ;) No, not leverage, but that's another good area......
Owen and birdman are tall and lanky, a bit like rors by the sound of it... Leverage helps that body type...

I was talking more of the Kong/ Simon Anderson sorta build. Spart ( photo at ulu), and myself, are more in that mould, though I'll never say my surfing EVER came close...... Sparts did though...
If you are still out there, rors, it really is quite hard to explain.. Spart explained it in the water, so I actually saw what he meant....
It's about "weightlessness"....... You watch, I'll go on another 500word confucius rant...

"If you think light, you'll be light"....
Big surfers are powerful surfers... But for power you need speed..... Speed is the key.... No dramas when it's 6 foot..... But 2 foot? hey.....
So.... How does a big guy get speed enough for powerful moves on a two foot wave? This is where my " If you think light, you'll be light" comment comes in..... ( honestly this is really hard to explain).
In small waves, those little fat gutless sections are where big guys bog. You see the featherweights and grommets have no problem... Often the big guy will do a carve , bog, then the huntington hop...
Do the opposite of what you think... If you have a bit of speed coming into a fat section, don't throw a carve and hop hop hop.... Keep the speed up and when you get to the fat section, think light and "almost" jump up taking all the weight off your board. Ummm.... Not like jump up onto tippy toes.... but just "think light" for a split second ...... Do it on the top of the wave when you still have maximum speed.... By taking 14 odd stone of weight off your board for that millisecond, whilst you still have speed, you will keep your momentum, and then as the pissy little wave sucks out more on the shorey, you'll be able to utilize the speed you haven't lost..... Wham! Closeout reo!! Does that make any sense to you?
Same deal on the take off.... A little grommet can drop down and rake out a bottom turn on a 2 foot wave, keep his speed and bam.....
A big guy should not bother with a bottom turn in little waves straight away.... Think light...... Take off on an angle, do a little adjustment turn 1/2 way down ( shouldnt be too much of a turn cos you've already taken off on an angle), as your doing your top turn readjustment to fly down the line, think light.... then gun it.... From take off to this moment is only about 1/2 a second.... It's very subtle....
I hope this makes some sense, cos it really is alot easier to explain in the water........
Cheers.....
