Ummm could it be to get a different view of the barrel perhaps? You need to get pretty deep to get a good barrel shot with the cams facing forwards and not all bazzaz allow for that so facing it backwards lets you see the 'not so deep' barrels. Not that i'd know, ive never had a camera on my surfboard.
