I reckon there’s been equally toxic periods over the years & can recall quite a few nasty specific attacks. Maybe this year has been more pronounced for all the reasons people have already stated.
I think Snuffy is onto it though. There definitely seems to be a bit of a club vibe at times. Some regulars often talk about the need for all voices to be shared & heard to add variety to the various topics, yet they seemingly end up talking amongst themselves. What’s hilarious though, is these same people continue to engage even after constant toxic abuse (both ways). That’s pretty loopy shit.
Tubeshooter also nailed it talking about not taking these online forums too seriously, something I’ve learned the hard way over the years.
The most enjoyable part for me is the comedy that arises from within various threads. There are many contributors that I personally find very funny. Long may it continue! Cheers!

Yes, i think its been said before but imagine some of these contributors all on a boat trip together but they were unaware of each others online identity. As long as the surf was good they would get along fine talking about what we all have in common. But then a flat spell and discussion veers to politics, covid vaccination... oh dear it would go to shit quite quickly.

The forums are usually pretty high quality, for what they are. This is a surf site, so I’m not really expecting in-depth and nuanced posts on politics here. I tend to go to more political sites for that content, but those sites are no better, although the quality of the invective may be a little higher. In other words, they shit-post just as much but some try to disguise it a little with bigger words.
Human beings are basically the same wherever you go. No surprise if this year has seen a rise in trolling and invective given the circumstances. We’ve all been under a lot of pressure.
FWIW, I started posting to web forums, on realsurf, around the late 90s, which was really the dawn of the internet. I’d be at work doing my stuff and this was such a new thing. It seemed like a boon for modern man, an escape for a cubicle bound employee. It wasn’t long before I started to see how vile, immature and thoroughly decrepit a lot of people are. Vile shit being posted. I just couldn’t understand why people would post shit that they clearly wouldn’t say to someone’s face.
Stu was there. I’ve met him, Craig and Ben once or twice, we even had some Xmas drinks one year. Freeride came down. I’ve even made a very good friend from that site, and some other fellas that I meet up with once a year for a Xmas dawn surf and brekkie. Who would have thought something so good would come of it all.
It really was weird to me though, the shit posting The worst forums on swellnet still don’t come close to those heady days of absolute insults and internet screaming matches.
And as I do post on more political forums, principally Crikey, I like reading swellnet forums to get a broader perspective. Political forums can be a little predictable, I think swellnet gives me a greater perspective of what the average punter thinks, and that is invaluable to me.
While I was working, posting to websites was a great escape. Now that I’ve been ‘let go’, (yay) I find myself with less time to spend on forums, sort of counter-intuitively. I love coming back here to read the comments and post, but it’s just an occasional thing now. You guys would know better than me whether it really has gone to shit, but to me it seems ‘same as it ever was, same as it ever was’.
Indo, I accept that you think your views are moderate to centre-right. Possibly in these days they are, but that is in the context of a society that has lurched a lot right of centre over the last two decades. Your views, historically speaking, are right of an already right-wing society. You fall short of far right, because far right these days refers to something to the right of Genghis Khan, but we, as a society, are nowhere near ‘centre’ any more. Even on these forums, you are not a voice of ‘the centre’. You would occupy the further right end of the spectrum here. That’s a good guide on where you stand in society, I would say.
Generally I find your political views creepy, insensitive, provocative, entitled and boorish. I do try however to play the ball and not the man, and counter your arguments with differing opinions. That’s how it should be.

Zen, to answer you’re question about the centre I believe you need to consider the historical context of where it sat in our lifetimes. That immediately mostly negates anything the info-warrior has to say as he has admitted his only recent interest in politics. His position reflects his recent evolution from dole bludger to aspirational tradie.

If we are talking smaller recent things, ive changed my mind on Nuclear like many people in recent times including people like Dick smith and Bill gates, i honestly thought it should be the future, i still think its the most efficient, clever energy source, but i watched a video about six months ago that made me understand that its not going to happen, not because its not a great energy source, but more the economics and politics of things, video below.
As you would know in the past ive also been very critical of climate change, although i did accept the science, i also believed maybe they could be wrong, maybe those videos from that 1% of climate scientist etc that dont agree are right or maybe it's not man made.
But ive changed my mind on this too, although not 100% certain id said its close to 99% certain that climate change is real and caused by man.
Why did i change my mind?...well you can thank Jim Banks, he was way over the top on his climate scepticism on FB and he shared some videos id watched, it made me re think things, also just all the dodgy crap about Covid from so called doctors etc just reconfirmed to me to be more careful in who or what i believe even if the source seems decent.
Edit: one more i can think off, population, my views on population mirrored pretty much those of Blowin, if you go back through these threads you will find i was the one who first brought up "sustainable population party" years and years ago when they first started, i voted for them or put them pretty high once, my mindset has changed a bit on this issue, although in theory i share views with Blowin, from a realistic perspective regarding economy etc i think its far more complicated and id now really be worried about the economy if we had a big change in immigration policy. (in all honesty i have mixed feelings on this topic, head and heart saying different things)
Oh and another abortion: I always use to be totally pro choice, get a girl pregnant no worries just have an abortion, but after having my first child 7 years ago (im in my 40s had kids late) although i haven't changed to Pro life, im kind of undecided and neither here nor there, just feeling my kid kicking inside my wife belly, changed how i viewed things...anyway im sure there is plenty more examples.

I've had a FB account since 2007 and have more friends from overseas that I've never met, than I have real ones living close by. I say that only because it relates to the fact that it not only gives me exposure to a wide spectrum of current beliefs, it provides an invaluable cultural resource that I can take screenshots of (only the best) and share on here!

Having worked for many Indigenous Australian Organsations, the actual exact opposite is true. Just like when a rape, or abuse victim, especially if young, sometimes can't make sense of why they might behave in ways that are detrimental to themselves, because somehow they blame themselves, despite being totally innocent. They can then find a relief, a sense of freedom, and feel support, and acceptance by themselves and others, when it is made crystal clear to them, that what was done to them, is in no way their fault. That realisation and acceptance can help them find peace, recover self esteem, and find a way forward. Yeah i was too late for Bali like Ullus, Padang Padang, Kuta reef by the time i got there many spots were already crowded although there was still plenty of waves especially compared to now, I still got to experience Bingin when there was about three losmens in the cliffs and you could stay for free just had to eat and drink there, still got plenty of uncrowded waves compared to now, Impossibles was always totally empty no one bothered unless it was really lining up, dreamland and Balanagan pretty much empty and no development, and im kicking myself i didnt listen to a guy who tipped me off on Keramas when it was not exposed to the world and called Brass monkeys or something or maybe it was called golden monkeys. (mas does mean gold)
And Canggu handful of guys on each spot was a crowd and it was all rice paddies, i cant even go there now its just depressing, oh and Nusa Lembongan was still empty most days was only really when a charter boat came through it got busy.
As for Indo overall it's never too late there is still plenty of areas off the radar some truely world class waves and lots of very fun waves, mostly fickle spots but if you put in the time the adventure is still there empty waves and places were no one speaks english just the true Indo vibe.
Ive also been lucky to surf so many areas before they got too crowded or overridden with resorts especially in Sumatra region, also use to surf central java and didnt see one western surfer ever, South Sumatra two losmens on the point at Karang Bocur whole coast empty, even Krui left and peak was empty back then a lot of the time, i even bought a block near Krui left still have it worth ten times what i paid but the area is turning into a little Kuta.
Then the Telos id never heard of them but looked at a map one day and saw these island between Nias and Telos, only one little mention of them on the internet back then on a charter boat website (no pics) but there was no resorts or anything, I went out there stayed in the local village with wave out front, no toilet, no running water, no electricity just kero lamps at night, surfing alone pretty much every surf, i actually use to paddle out when a charter boat came for the company which was rare, made life long friends that are like my second family.
Went back next year and myself and my new local friend went searching for different waves, yes they had all been surfed, but i didnt know the names or what was what, to experience that is amazing i surfed every spot alone including the most perfect wave in the area which is one of the funnest barrels ever.
Mentawais also very lucky to experience before it got too crowded there was two maybe three resorts in playgrounds area and got to experience the original set up at Ebay, just coconut farmer huts, just a few guys staying there, no toilets, no running water, no electricity again just kero lamps, use to surf all the waves in that area including other side of island with just friends or a couple of crew, go surf elsewhere if a charter boat or resort boat came..
Same with telescopes area only one resort, i even surfed perfect Telesopes alone one February got so sunburnt i couldn't surf the next day and it was pumping but i was serious sick with sunstroke only other surfer in the area some backpacker that could barely stand up so it broke all day perfect and empty.
Latter on ran maccas resort in 2008 and they also had the laut India (Indie explorer charter boat) got out there late Feb got to surf Maccas with one guy, surfed HT's, Lance left with one or two guys, surfed Macaronis more than anyone on earth that year and im still a shit backhand tube rider, im sure i hold the record for most waves surfed at maccas without being barrelled, but as we all know maccas is just as much about turns.
So yeah if you think i missed it, well think that but ive had some super cool experiences and super uncrowded perfect waves, and you know the best thing, it's still possible even now. (especially this year)
PS. I actually just clicked that link, and wow i can't beleive how civil you were in that thread way back in 2014 even with Blowin, that whole thread is real positive, imagine that going down today the trolls would be posting all kinds of negative stuff to bring the cool vibe down.

Ferry from Nias to Tello. Once there, negotiated a fishing boat (thanks to local Lagundri surfer, Sinali who came with us) and motored off for about 10 days.
