Interesting stuff
Udo come on man...
We used to be allowed to sleep in the shed attached to that little farmhouse on that land opposite Flatrock 30 years ago. Cross the road and there were heaps of horses cruising. Used to buy bread, bananas and a kilo of snags and cook 'em up. That would keep us going.
That land was always going to go, doesn't make it any less sad.
You don't think it's worthwhile asking a person getting paid by the taxpayer to maintain a "pipeline of Australian world champions" why they are failing so miserably?
I doubt ignoring them will make them go away, much more likely they will receive whole heaps more public money for the Olympics and to develop wave pools.
Couldn't see a more important time to at least attempt to hold them to some basic accountability. No matter what bullshit they spin to their useful idiots.
top brass is sarcasm
There are two distinct bloodlines for Labradors, show and working dogs. The show dogs blood lines originated in England and they are the ones with the big heads that will make eye contact with you before you are forced to pat for a few minutes. The working dogs originated in the US and they are the dogs commonly used as guide, companion and sniffer dogs. Either type will give you at least an hour to given them a good pat. Always happy always wagging the tail. Check out this guy (sound on)
Most will snore the house down.
Our last two have been the big show dogs and our current fella weighs in at 42kg not that he's worried.
Too true, when you look at all the issues in society plus environmental, it really does seem like a waste spending money on surfing for no benefit other than to say you're now better or worse at surfing. Doesn't pass the pub test that's for sure.
Nice that there are about 3 separate threads going on in here at present.
GS - black and brown Labs, fantastic swimmers. I have memories of duckdiving 4ft sets back in the West and having this smiling black Lab swimming and diving under it right beside me. A mate's dog, total legend. Still smiling while I was getting worked.

"yep, Doc Stewarts land.
iconic view about to be turned into McMansions.
it makes you sick but honestly, what can you do?
keep voting Green?"
Maybe the Land for Wildlife bit is the solution, find the funds somehow, place it under trust with something like LfW, and keep the land the way it is? Unless you are in really remote areas it's going to cost.
“Oh what a time to be alive and in your youth (20s 30s and 40s) in this country! Education debts, limited work opportunities mostly in services or pointless government beurocracy, housing assets so expensive you abandon any plans to have children and spend 15 years saving for a deposit so you can be out bid by money laundered from China.”
This one worries me more than almost everything else. It's particularly galling considering the Chinese just printed Yuan (issued loans, same thing, thin air...) after the GFC to buy all these real assets here and in other places. I guess the Chinese response was after watching the Bernanke Fed do QE, where the USD out of thin air went to plugging holes in the banks (then they punted it on commodities). Astounding that Australia did not cotton on to this happening, and put up restrictions on what could be sold for money printed out of thin air. The young locals suffer.
I went on a boat trip with a guy once who loved his brown lab so much he’d call out to her in his sleep!
True story!
“Miloooooo”
Got an Airedale Terrier about 9 months back and for some reason she just bolts every time I mutter "For Fucksakes". She's forever dissapearing while I'm renovating!!!
Labs are great swimmers Our chocolate “Mungo” will happily rock off behind a line up and swim in. Can’t go for a body bash with him on the beach without getting clawed as he joins in the fun. Still doing it at 12 yrs
I watched that vid in its entirety Blowy, very interesting and an insight into the workings of the CCP. The last ten minutes in particular.
Be very wary of 5G and if you can, use cash. I do.
Labs are great dogs, our neighbour had a true waterdog- we used to chuck really big stones into the pool or down at the river and it would fully swim down to retrieve them. She loved it.
A labrador that swims you say?
I've had Maxy Walker for nine months and I take him to the beach almost every day and he still thinks he can drink the seawater. Every day he shoves his head in then looks at me funny while hacking it back up.
No way I'd trust him to swim out there.
"I watched that vid in its entirety Blowy, very interesting and an insight into the workings of the CCP. The last ten minutes in particular.

Same, watched it all
the 5G thing was indeed interesting. I've pretty much avoided any meaningful thought about the usual 5G fears. however that vid opens a whole other can of worms.
fb, google etc. etc.'s love for accomodating all things china ha just taken a real dark turn
the worst of that vid is nothing to do with ccp, it's the billionaires shopping for live organs at the uyghur farm ...and thinking the world is gonna be cool with that...
we're in some seriously dark twisted territory now...
Watched vid in full now. DNA test and ultrasound organ scan upon incarceration, booking of appointments for new heart, live harvest of organs while people sedated. Truly saddening and evil. I don't want to believe it's true.
Concentration camps with incinerators... wtf. Very dark times.
Cash is king Zen. I've gone back to a dumb phone.
Back to doggos:
I was working NW Tassie and stopped to ask a farmer for directions. He was on a 4 wheel motorbike, red cloud kelpie (beautiful) on the back tray. The dog got happy, wanted to meet me and jumped off the tray. Farmer looked down and went "uuuuURRRRGH! FUXAKE!!!!!!!" and the dog yelped and ran back up to the tray, jumping up with its tail between its legs! Garyg1412, maybe they are genetically encoded to understand that word.
VJ. I feel sorry for some of those farm dogs..
Some, not all, are just another farm tool that when they reach their used by date are just shown the end of the rifle
Many are truly loved Indo. Revered. Loved for their nature and prized for their work. My Tassie farmer must have had a frustrating morning for his kelpie, but I'm sure it was valued. The ones I heard of that got shot were if they developed the taste for blood and roamed at night tearing sheep apart. Vast minority. But it's in the DNA despite those 20,000 years...
The Ms. certainly views them as working animals still, and takes a dim view of non-working dogs that don't obey. For this reason no dog in our household, and probably for the better for I'm hopeless with dog-discipline :)
Great lab stories being shared .... I'm still feeling your pain Stu, haha
One of my labs would paddle out in the lineup all the time and loved to body surf. He loved the beach so much just uttering the word would see him jump the fence and jump through the car window and he would sit on the back seat waiting for us. He would sleep in the back until we were within a few kms of the beach and he would then start up a little cry in excitement. Once parked at the beach there would be this black flash over my shoulder as he leaped out of the car and down the track or up the dune. Always first in the water. Once settled on a spot on the sand he would proceed to dig holes in a wide circle right around us. We never had to worry about people sitting anywhere near us.
This dog also slept with us on our bed. One night I woke up in a nano second with my wife rubbing my chest. Thinking things could get interesting my wife then turns away from me saying oh I thought you were the dog, thanks for nothing!
..... and then was our next Lab who refused to swim and who was so chilled we called him Buddha.
Ever seen a chihuahua dig on the beach? They dig at about 12,000 revs
China leases an entire Island in the Solomons with a deep-water port.
nothing to see there.
Back to the dogs (for now),
My earliest memory of a pet is around 9 years having a white cat named Whitey. She suddenly disappeared, never to be seen again. Around 12 when I moved into my new step-father’s house where he had 2 dogs, both German Shepherds. Tessa was around 5 years old and bloody good looking for a dog. Damian was a grey old bugger with a dodgy coat and a metal plate in one its back legs. They were both friendly enough but also intimidating, and as you could guess fucking scary when pissed off. Kinda like my new step-dad really. Damian didn't last long and Tessa didn't live long enough.
A few years later a brown and white Kelpie Staffie (I think) cross turned up suddenly one day and made herself at home. She was the happiest and friendliest and smartest little dog I have ever known, and yet I don't recall her name. We would go down the back yard with a bat or racket and I would hit tenny balls as far as I could. She would chase them down, bring them back, and drop them at my feet begging to do it all again. I remember thinking "How good is this!" She had a litter of pups, half a dozen of them, all pitch black. She suddenly disappeared one day, never to be seen again, again.
For about the last 15 years I've owned 2 cats. Omelia was perfectly white, had 2 litters of 4 kittens, lived a full cat life, but was eventually eaten away by sun cancer, even after losing her ears first. The other one, Clio, is a classic black cat. Rescued from under a house I was renovating and just one of 2 kittens with no mum in sight I eventually took her home. Years later she was hit by a car and spent 2 and half days across the road until we found her after ‘one more’ search. Her pelvis was broken and needed some serious medical attention. Lets just say her medical bills were ‘significant’. She had 1 litter of 4 kittens and has been going strong for about 13 years now.
Fairly recently she had a urinary tract infection combined with constipation, and she somehow developed an ability to do the 'death metal meow'. I'm not sure I can explain the sound, suffice to say it's long and loud! I mean dog bark death metal loud. It seems the older she gets the more dog-like she becomes. Well she doesn’t chase balls and return them outside, but if you roll up a small ball of aluminium foil she will go nuts and bash and play that little metal ball all around the inside of the house. Recently she has religiously become determined to not miss out on a morning left over bit of milk from my cereal. She literally sits on her back legs and stands up and gently claws at my leg begging me not to forget to leave her some.
One thing I can say, with all things considered; my next pet will be a dog.
On a different note Zen have you seen this, boys having a crack
Stolen from Mick off another site
Couple of pics here and the quote, legend.
“It was big, like I’ve never seen before,” said Misao Tako. “Unfortunately, the wind was so strong that it made the conditions very tough. Still, it’s in these kind of conditions that we should try it, because it doesn’t happen very often. When we have a chance, we need to go. I am 66 years old and I don’t have plan to retire from surfing big waves.”

I f, that vid a long way from me- Kyushu. I live in northern Ibaraki. We have a few spots that can handle big waves and quite a few that give them a go. Few genuine secret spots too and a few novelities if it's massive and the stars align.
I loosely know Dane who took some of the pics in the Surfline article. He owns an airbnb down in Chiba, he used to come up here every now and then but haven't seen him in years.
I didn't surf this swell, i was actually trekking in Aomori prefecture with my wife. My mate got in a couple of seshes and the day after the typhoon when i was back we went looking south when we should have gone north. Got reports a certain place was 10ft +, offshore and barrelling. A few pros were on it including an upcoming 14 yo.
Kinda feel i dodged a bullet though- ha ha!
Well done, Tako San!
Reminded me of this guy, and why you want to stay healthy and keen:
Wow to all the pics and vids, it's like a Japanese North Point.

Edit: better Barcelona link added.
Haven't read in depth about them all (been surfing) but in the Lebanon and Chile ones, cost of living was given as a cause. Dutch farmers were against regulation halving or ceasing their livestock. HK - it's regulations allowing arrest to the mainland that ignited it. All this after French Yellow vests which were a diesel tax hike and banning diesels in towns and cities. Barcelona it's the incarceration for 13 years of 9 pro-independence politians (Catalan). All of them grow beyond the initial cause.
"Thousands of demonstrators Saturday poured into Barcelona ahead of a planned mass anti-globalization rally"
Jeez, you'd get called a racist for that in many parts of the New Australia.
Also, I'm really interested to see just how much of a disconnect there's going to be between people expecting a cleaner, greener future while also expecting the cost of living and standards of living to stay the same or "get better".
Surely something has to give.
It's beginning to give in multiple locations Andy. World growth is slowing, the whole globalist system is straining. Regulations cutting people's livelihoods don't help.
My underlying guess would be that USD shortages worldwide are leading indirectly to the unrest. The periphery burns first, later will it get to the core?
World growth might be slowing but it's the reaction to this that will be fascinating.
Who will say "good, this is the beginning of something better" and who will say "I'm not willing to sacrifice anything, prop it up by any means necessary, military or otherwise".
And:
"My underlying guess would be that USD shortages worldwide are leading indirectly to the unrest."
Anything further on this last point?

Also, I remember Stu telling of his Dad predicting the Japanese buying up a lot of Oz at top dollar in the 1980s, then they crashed, locals bought back at pennies on the dollar (thereby funding lots of prawns on the barbie, and good times - like shorting your own country and then covering it for a profit!)

Looks like it's that time for China.
I link as one comment really stood out to me:
"My repo theory.
We are assuming that China is holding on to the UST that it owns. What if Chinese companies have borrowed UST owned by China and posted them as collateral for loans from US banks? Because of tariffs and having overpaid for foreign assets, the Chinese companies have a hard time getting US dollars to repay the US banks. The US banks holding these Underperforming Assets would see a steep revenue shortfall, and repo the UST collateral to kick the can down the road. No writedowns, no Chinese dumping of US Treasuries are booked.
Seems to make sense. It would all lead to a huge unraveling."
by a fellow called 'e-man'. Certainly food for thought. Maybe in meantime look into Eurodollar markets (that's a subject in itself, I'm not very good at it.) Overnight Fed upped the repo for Brexit. Those, USDs, everyone wants them...
