Love him or hate him Putin is a brutal politician. Here's the link to his speech from October where he is charting a new ideological path for Russia. It's long but worth a read, really interesting. I pasted a few paragraphs below.

https://www.memri.org/reports/russias-new-conservative-ideology-counter-...

'According to Putin, liberalism has failed and the new progressive liberal ideas pushed forward by the West show only a loss of values and identity. Hence, to counter the liberal elite in the West, Putin suggests for Russia to become the beacon of conservatism and traditionalism. "The conservative views we hold are an optimistic conservatism," Putin affirmed at the Valdai Forum.

...

'Beware Of Going Where The Bolsheviks Once Planned To Go'

In his speech, Putin, who considers history as a key element for shaping Russia's new ideology, actually states:

"Where are the humanitarian fundamentals of Western political thought? … What are the general ethical limits in the world where the potential of science and machines are becoming almost boundless? … Some people in the West believe that an aggressive elimination of entire pages from their own history, 'reverse discrimination' against the majority in the interests of a minority, and the demand to give up the traditional notions of mother, father, family and even gender, they believe that all of these are the mileposts on the path towards social renewal.
...

"The advocates of so-called 'social progress' believe they are introducing humanity to some kind of a new and better consciousness. Godspeed, hoist the flags, as we say, go right ahead. The only thing that I want to say now is that their prescriptions are not new at all. It may come as a surprise to some people, but Russia has been there already. After the 1917 revolution, the Bolsheviks, relying on the dogmas of Marx and Engels, also said that they would change existing ways and customs, and not just political and economic ones, but the very notion of human morality and the foundations of a healthy society. The destruction of age-old values, religion, and relations between people, up to and including the total rejection of family (we had that, too), encouragement to inform on loved ones – all this was proclaimed progress and, by the way, was widely supported around the world back then and was quite fashionable, same as today. By the way, the Bolsheviks were absolutely intolerant of opinions other than theirs.

"This, I believe, should call to mind some of what we are witnessing now. Looking at what is happening in a number of Western countries, we are amazed to see the domestic practices - which we, fortunately, have left, I hope - in the distant past. The fight for equality and against discrimination has turned into aggressive dogmatism bordering on absurdity, when the works of the great authors of the past – such as Shakespeare – are no longer taught at schools or universities, because their ideas are believed to be backward. The classics are declared backward and ignorant of the importance of gender or race. In Hollywood, memos are distributed about proper storytelling and how many characters of what color or gender should be in a movie. This is even worse than the agitprop department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

"Countering acts of racism is a necessary and noble cause, but the new 'cancel culture' has turned it into 'reverse discrimination' – that is, reverse racism. The obsessive emphasis on race is further dividing people, when the real fighters for civil rights dreamed precisely about erasing differences and refusing to divide people by skin color. I specifically asked my colleagues to find the following quote from Martin Luther King: 'I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by their character.' This is the true value. However, things are turning out differently there. By the way, the absolute majority of Russian people do not think that the color of a person's skin or their gender is an important matter. Each of us is a human being. This is what matters.

"In a number of Western countries, the debate over men’s and women’s rights has turned into a perfect phantasmagoria. Look, beware of going where the Bolsheviks once planned to go – not only communalizing chickens, but also communalizing women. One more step and you will be there."

Putin then adds:

"Zealots of these new approaches even go so far as to want to abolish these concepts altogether. Anyone who dares mention that men and women actually exist, which is a biological fact, risks being ostracized. 'Parent number one' and 'parent number two,' 'birthing parent' instead of 'mother,' and 'human milk' replacing 'breastmilk' because it might upset the people who are unsure about their own gender. I repeat, this is nothing new; in the 1920s, the so-called Soviet Kulturtraegers also invented some newspeak believing they were creating a new consciousness and changing values that way. And, as I have already said, they made such a mess it still makes one shudder at times.

"Not to mention some truly monstrous things when children are taught from an early age that a boy can easily become a girl and vice versa. That is, the teachers actually impose on them a choice we all supposedly have. They do so while shutting the parents out of the process and forcing the child to make decisions that can upend their entire life. They do not even bother to consult with child psychologists – is a child at this age even capable of making a decision of this kind? Calling a spade a spade, this verges on a crime against humanity, and it is being done in the name and under the banner of progress.

"Well, if someone likes this, let them do it. I have already mentioned that, in shaping our approaches, we will be guided by a healthy conservatism. That was a few years ago, when passions on the international arena were not yet running as high as they are now, although, of course, we can say that clouds were gathering even then. Now, when the world is going through a structural disruption, the importance of reasonable conservatism as the foundation for a political course has skyrocketed – precisely because of the multiplying risks and dangers, and the fragility of the reality around us."

Conclusion

Putin has smartly introduced himself into the debate that already exists in the Western world about liberalism, and more specifically progressive liberalism. If Putin manages to outline a new conservative ideology, then Russia would become a political and ideological pole for conservatives also in the U.S. and Europe. This is already partly happening in some European countries. Ironically, we could witness a new Cold War, but with reversed roles: the West would be a pole for progressive-liberal-communist ideology while Russia would represent the conservative pole. Even more ironically, Eastern European countries that rebelled against the Soviet Union, mainly Hungary and Poland, now have conservative elected governments that in the future may look at Moscow as an ideological point of reference.

Well summed up in your last paragraph flollo and spot on re Eastern Europe.
However I think that Politicians of any view - Conservative or Liberal are happy to push the agendas mentioned above (family/gender, rah rah) so as to distract the masses from the actual business of running their countries.
Instead, they appeal to basic emotions even the dumbest nuffies can relate to.
The news media is used/controlled to maintain the narrative in most cases.

“People in the United States no longer agree on the nation’s purpose, values, history, or meaning. Is reconciliation possible?”

You could easily say the same about Australia - we’ve been wrestling with this openly for at least 25 years and of course Howard kicked the culture wars into hyperdrive.
For better or for worse Australia will never be a cohesive nation state again.

It's because we(the West) have had it way to good for way to long and dont understand how good we have it, unlike older generations that went through wars and understood how lucky we are to live in a democracy with freedom and free markets and a high standard of living etc.

We lack nationalism these days, we lack being proud of who we are and proud of our country, and now we have a generation where sadly some people even hate their country and hate the system they live under and even in some cases sadly look to things like Communism and Socialism.

Immigrants rarely do this they are the most appreciative people you can get and know how lucky they are to living in a developed country like Australia or even the USA.

The good news is, if we have a war we will all come together as one, and if we don't have to go through a war in our lifes we will still be lucky even if many of us don't appreciate it.

America's big problem is they don't even share the same facts anymore. I was there at the start of the culture wars. You'd listen to scumbags like Rush Limbaugh and think WTF, this is a joke. Fox News was just kicking off and it was nuts. Just ridiculous from the start. And things just went down hill for the next two decades. There was a concerted attack on the dreaded "elites". These right wing cultural warriors undermined great public institutions like universities, courts, and a reasonable media in what was just a disgraceful power grab at the expense of national interest. Chuck in social media and foreign troll factories and the inevitable happened.
Now America has a situation where 40% of the population still think Trump won the election. FFS, think about what that means for a society. That mob also think the Jan 6 insurrectionists are heroes. Like I said, they don't even share the same facts anymore. Until the pro-Trump nutters face basic reality, rather than making up their own, the USA is in the poo.

I tend to disagree, I think this has been building for some time with influence coming from different directions, including post-colonialism, post-modernism and libertarianism.

These, along with social media/the internet facilitate identity politics.
Throw into the mix end-game capitalism/crony capitalism/wealth disparity as well as high levels of immigration and you have a country which struggles with its purpose, values, history, or meaning.

So if you're saying this is all planned then I disagree, but of course politicians have and will take advantage of all this for all manner of purposes.

I actually agree with blowin on this, but I reckon he'd be blaming the wrong people for the divide in the country.
About 20 years ago conservatives started banging on about the danger of "the elites". eg academics, journalists, inner city people. people who wanted Australia to be a republic. etc.
The "elites" were / are never people who agreed with conservative ideals. eg billionaire miners, influential religious types, media moguls, powerful shock jocks etc. In fact those stinking rich elites were leading the charge against academics, magistrates, environmentalists etc.
We now see so many stupid people angrily abusing medical professionals, anti-intellectualism on a grand scale, and the rise of anti-government contrarians. Those who benefit the most from this are of course the billionaire set and their political allies.
The age of ignorance provides a rich vein of power for some true scumbags, but hey, the biggest danger to society are those "elites" working in academia on $100K a year.

Anyone know how the Krudd stimulus package and Scomo stimulus package compare in total amount spent???

Id expect the recent one probably bigger as longer period.

Yeah sure both wasted money in many areas, but both also worked to keep the economy a float.

BTW. Keeping the car industry alive is about as pointless as keeping a your dead 90 year old grandmother alive on life support.

As for inner city elites, the real problem is that just don't have much of a grasp on the reality of how 95% of Australians live, it never surprises me how people like university lectures or even scientist can be so smart in some areas but on the flip side lack basic understandings of simple things in life. (im talking from real life experience of know these people and working for them)

Anyway you want to talk about wasted money, just imagine if Albo (Anal) got his way and paid everyone $300 to get the jab, that would have been money well spent yeah.

The conscious fracturing of society is a preemptive way of derailing the revolution which happens when a cohesive society wonders how they’ve been cheated out of 99% of the world’s wealth by 1% of the world’s population.

The 1% know from previous history that when they’ve finally turned the entirety of the world into an underclass, as is the only possible outcome from of a zero sum growth economy and the approaching automation of all human occupations, that they’ll be on a short course towards the mob hunting them down for revenge.

So the plan is fracture society by every division possible in order to set the plebs amongst themselves and hope they never realise who’s really sticking it to them.

Right vs left, black vs white, gender wars , diversity is strength, identity wars, vaccinated vs unvaccinated…..anything to stop the class war which erupts when the plebs set their sights on the Davos mob. The astroturfed Critical Race Theory movement literally and unironically promotes separation and apartheid of races as the alleged path towards …? What exactly? Certainly not reconciliation. Division is your answer.

That’s what Biden’s determination to reframe political dissent as domestic terrorism is all about….get the population accustomed to the idea of the government policing ideology and subjugating possible internal threat. That’s what the coming social credit system and central bank digital currency is all about ….it’s hard to dissent if the government can exclude you from society at the press of a button.

That’s why multiculturalism is pushed so hard into the developed world. It’s a triple threat win of accelerated growth, a compliant and exploitable workforce and loss of a unifying theme for social cohesion.

Unless you think somehow it’s incompetence which leads to such Clown World outcomes as this :

“Melburnians have been told to save water to ensure that the city’s population can double in size:

Greater Western Water, Melbourne Water, South EastWater and Yarra Valley Water have launched a campaign to help Melburnians cut their water use…

Yarra Valley Water managing director Pat McCafferty said while the state’s water storages were presently well filled, sustainable use was essential to ensure long term supplies.

“With the city’s population forecast to almost double by 2051 and the changing environment affecting water storages over the next 30 years, the 155-litre target is just one of many actions to help secure Melbourne’s water supplies for the future,” Mr McCafferty said.

“I think most of us will remember the Millennium drought and severe water restrictions enforced as a result…

Billions wasted on a handful of people in refugee camps, land values exploding by orders of magnitude to LNP aligned mates, half-a-bill on a questionable non-tendered GBR fund, Barndoor and his water buyback rorts to Cayman Island-registered entities (that have done fuck all for the Murray-Darling), it gies on and on.

What you guys are saying about the intellectual elite, academics and even scientists is spot on.

My little journey was one of of labouring in trade jobs and then going back to uni at around 30. When I got there I realised that in dealing with academics, I was dealing with complete imbeciles who had the maturity and life experience of 11yr old girls. They had absolutely no conception of or experience in the real world.

Then of course the obvious dawned on me that these are grown people who never actually left school or the education system to took that big step out into society. That explains them perfectly.

The mistake they make is not only are they completely off the mark with their perspective on society, but they over-intellectualise, overanalyse and overcomplicate everything. They have no credibility.

This problem with the US is very simple. The democratic, legal, government, economic etc institutions are set up by and in favour of those who "make it", ie, gain wealth, the elite wealthy. It is also rigged in the favour of large corporations. The whole focus of US society is achievement, standing out, making it, elite wealth, going big etc. Everyone and everything else is just a means to this. Basically what blowin is saying above.

The intellectuals and academics can debate and over-intellectualise about society, culture and politics all they want in their modernism, postmodernism, critical theory, etc, frameworks, contexts and theories. But in doing that they're just living in overcomplicated and irrelevant rabbit holes and echo chambers. They're part of the problem via unknowingly fabricating mass confusion and overcomplexity.

Worth understanding that for 15-20 years prior to the introduction of Reaganomics and Thatcherism the Western world was locked into a boom bust cycle that no treasurer, here or anywhere, could get out of, and by the time stagflation came along in the 70s the Western world was desperate for a solution. Rolling strikes, seized public service, and a stricken private sector led to all manner of social decay - more pronounced in US and UK than here, yet given time it would have happened here to the same degree.

Friedman and Hayek offered a way out of that path. There was no grand design for social atomisation or whatever, it was a solution to an immediate problem, a theory that dated back to the 1930s. The unshackling of economies worked, in that Western countries became more free and more prosperous and the boom bust cycle was almost wholly eradicated. Hallelujah, yeah?

Yet there were also negative outcomes, not realised till years after the unwinding began, and like any great system it takes time and great political will to, first admit, then address, the problems. In this case they're made worse cos the beneficiaries of Neo-liberalism - and hooey, did they benefit! - are now in the position to influence hearts and minds.

Anyway, point being, all Western economies - save the Scandos, funny that - were spluttering from the 60s onwards and needed a change; a Big New Thing to come along and rescue them

In a way I feel like we're in a similar situation where all Western economies - save the Scandos, again - are facing similar threats and are waiting, just like they were in 1972, for a solution to break them out of the malaise.

This statement is gold and explains most of what we see going on around us now.

One thing I'd like to add to what you wrote overall is:

Getting control over the boom-bust cycle and the long period of increase in prosperity and living standards is also due to very practical, down-to-earth and mundane improvements in understanding and practice of economic management and policy, and the point being, in ways that are divorced from economic and political ideology in terms of things like capitalism vs socialism/communism, (neo)liberalism, left vs right, conservative, etc.

People often underestimate the importance to living standards and prosperity of getting the very basics of economic policy and management right in terms of low and stable inflation and unemployment and interest rates, stable economic growth, prudent government budget and debt management, prudent balance of payments and foreign debt management, focus on technological advance, etc.

These are all non-ideological things that also occurred over time and explain a lot.

Except Australians aren’t that stupid and the social conflict never eventuated. That’s the exact scenario I described. The part you fail to understand is that the foreigner has been iimported into the country by the guy with all the cookies with the express intention of creating extreme competition in a race towards the bottom for that last cookie . This way the guy with all the cookies gets to pay EVERYONE less , both foreigner and hi viz, whilst simultaneously escaping blame for having all the cookies due to the distraction of the resultant social conflict.

Except Australians aren’t that stupid and the social conflict never eventuated. They don’t blame the foreigner personally, but they are astute enough to recognise that the foreigner has been weaponised against them by the fella with the cookies. That’s the part you fail to comprehend. You’re one of the few remaining throwbacks who’s still swallowing the “ rejecting mass immigration is racist” gaslighting tropes fed to the population at the first pushback against the strategy.

You should find someone you trust to explain where you are missing the point bloke. Do you know any adults to whom you could confide your stupidity in a safe environment?

You've spent years on this site attacking foreigners, refugees, and immigrants blowin. You've spent years blaming them for all the problems in Australia. Take one look at the House prices thread. Literally thousands upon thousands of your comments blaming migrants for high house prices. You wanted South Koreans rounded up for immediate deportation. No trial, just frog marched to the planes for removal. You've spent years cheering on Hanson's racist agenda.
FFS blowin, it's a bit late now to say you understand the cartoon and don't blame the individual immigrants for the divisions in Australian society.

Don’t blame me for your years of mis comprehension bloke. That’s the result of your dedication to being a blunt tool. Built off a naturally stupid base of course.

But seriously….your whole too stupid for words character is boring and distracting. I’m not certain if you’re role playing or are genuinely that retardulant. Either way I wish you’d take it elsewhere. Fuck ….you brought nothing of value to any conversation I’ve ever seen. Nothing. Everyone has differing opinions but yours are aggressively stupid and never , ever thought provoking. It’s one continuous deep sigh of drudgery every time you yell your misread of each and every topic.

Dullard.

I’ve told you previously and you gnarled what I told you then twisted it into some kind of weird hate speech perversion.

Last time : The Koreans were illegal workers denying the locals of of one the few sources of employment in an area of extreme unemployment. I don’t give a fuck if they’re Korean Comanche or from Jupiter, Australia has a system of award wages and working conditions designed to ensure we don’t create an underclass of working poor. These people came to Australia and worked illegally for less than the award in a cynical ploy to undermine the members of the community who might otherwise have had employment.

Deport them , fuck them off, shoot them into outer space with a cartoonishly large cannon….I don’t give a rat’s arse.

You’re back on ignore. You’re too dumb and too dull.

Fark orff carnt.

Yeah the lame pointless one line insults from people that just pop into a conversation without actually engaging in the topic are just as eye rolling, they are much different to insults you receive when actually engaging in conversation with someone, its more like really dude why bother.

They are generally pretty easy to ignore most of the time though, and in most cases the person posting just looks silly.

To be honest id probably prefer the trolls from Guy than the annoying crap you get from VL though :P

And of course you save all your rage for the immigrants with no mention of the scumbag farmers or labor hire dogs.
Thanks for proving my point about the cartoon.

Foreigners working illegally are low dogs. They are breaking Australia’s laws in order to undercut locals for wages and working conditions. I’ve got zero hesitation in berating those disrespectful and socially damaging shit bags.

No different from Russians without work visas setting up a surf school in Bali and funnelling their countrymen away from the Indo surf schools. It’s a carnt of an act.

Don’t blame me if you can’t tell the difference between the two issues. It’s your lack of mental acuity causing your confusion, not mine of anyone else’s.

Oops…I forgot that you employ coolies to do your tourism work for less dollars than young Aussies. No wonder it’s a pet hate of yours when people raise the issue.

At this point you’re basically Gina Rhinehart bloke. Ready to undercut Aussie workers with low wage foreigners all whilst you subsidise your business with taxpayers dollars. You’re crook as Rookwood bloke. You ain’t worth the sweat off my arse crack.

It should be the Fake Left “aspirational Australians “like you getting loaded into that cannon. You’re a closet conservative. You love the taxpayer Ching Ching handouts and can’t wait to see the Aussie wages driven down by flood of coolie labour.

Why are MAMILs always right wing little king small business scumbags? Cooking the employee’s they resent for the wages they’re entitled.
