Happy Australia day !!!!

Sure the long weekend officially starts tomorrow, but patience has never been my strong suit and today is just too damn fine to waste with thoughts of routine So I’ve kicked this thing off early.

Actually started with a bang last night as another earthquake shook me from sleep. It was a stinker of a night . Building up to some monsoonal activity and the hot , still nights are here with a vengeance. Laying with the sheets bunched on the floor and the air from the fan brushing my skin.

Then I was woken by the Big Fella of the mob of greys that gets around the traps. He seemed to think that indoors was the place to be. First time I’ve seen a kangaroo trying to negotiate a fly screen door. Stupid prick.

Third event for the night and it sounds like someone’s after my tinny - the Sea Wok . Throw on some shorts and bolt down the path to investigate straight into an industrial sized spiders web. Still asleep , I actually feel the Big Golden orb running across my chest trying to escape.

The boat was fine . The spider and myself came to an agreement to stay the fuck away from each other from now on. Back to bed.

Woke up bleary to a perfect day. Northerly beats me to the punch . Surfing’s out so it’s coffees at the kiosk then a quick dive to spear some lunch.

Fish in the fridge , the days heating up and I’m planning on cracking my first beer at 14:30.

Feel free to join me.

Time to take stock of the incredible life we’ve got in this amazing country.

You might not like the premise, but I reckon this holiday rules. It’s the celebration of Australia at its peak. Everyone has let go of the old year and made inroads on the next. The craziness and release of the Chrissy / New Years is behind us and the summer has been wrung of every bit of fun available. The caravan parks and coastal towns are still chockers but the last hurrah is upon us. It’s been great and I’ve had a ball.

So raise a glass or an ice cream or a halal salad or whatever the fuck you want in recognition of how good we’ve got it here under Huey’s benevolent gaze.

Regardless of what any of us think about dates etc, my boys, all taxpayers and homeowners, great work ethic, would give the shirt off their backs to you if you ask them will go down to the beach tomorrow with all their mates and families in their different towns and set up chairs under the trees where they will have a great day swimming, playing cricket, drinking a few cold ones, sharing a few tall stories, laughing until it hurts and generally having a great time. They wouldn't care if it was a different day to the 26th as long as we celebrate all things Australian. If someone tried to terrorise us or invade our country they wouldn't get on a boat and piss off somewhere else, they would fight for their freedom and keep their country the way it is. They don't care if your black, white or green with purple spots, as long as your a good person and contribute to your country's good welfare, your their good mate. Thinking the best of everyone until they prove otherwise and celebrating your nation on any date the public chooses to is what we are all about I think. No one, not anybody, should drive looking in the rear view mirror or you will crash. The past is past, celebrate who we all are today.

Yeah the 27th will do.

Because apparently invasion day started and ended on the 26th

Well if it's a 'day' - 24 hrs - then it actually did.

But not a very good argument anyway, ID. People celebrate their birthdays despite being alive every other day of the year.

indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming Friday, 25 Jan 2019 at 8:40am

It was obviously sarcasm, obviously the invasion has never stopped.

I just can't get my head around how people think a change of date would change anything, in the past I've actually wanted a date change...just to be able to say, yep told you so once all the whinging continues and the attack comes onto other aspects like ceremonies and reenactments.

But now having learnt the history behind the day, it's really not worth changing just to say i told you so. (not that my view makes one tiny bit of difference)

But like i said a few pages back last year, it not really about indigenous people, it's become more just a power play thing, typical politics.

Good to see the government making a move to protect the date, if its to be changed then 100% it should be the public that decide, not just another point scoring exercise.

It's kind of ironic when you think about it, the far left are so vocal about protecting others cultures and traditions, but on the flip side happy to water down or destroy their own.

Fucken hell, you blokes and your assertions. I would like to see it on a date that all Australians can celebrate - and I've given my personal reasons why, although you lot just think that it's 'politics' - and I damn well dont think Australian culture is shallow. I've no idea where you get this idea from but it's binary thinking

@Stunet ()any anyone else i guess)

Im curious, so if the date changed, would you still be happy to keep everything else the same?.

Ive never bothered watching it, but i assume they do a reenactment and raise the flag for the first time, id hope they shot some old school guns etc (actually I'm going to make an effort to watch it this year if on TV)

Kind of seems weird that we would do this on a different date to what it really happened knowing full well its a different date.(sure there is some dates we have that aren't technically correct, but they are generally dates with religious/pagan aspects

And if the date was changed to the 25th or 27th January would you be cool with this?

Or does it need to have a distance in days or something from the proper date?

(BTW. im not taking the piss I'm honestly curious in how you people think)

I know people suggest date changes to other historic dates, but isn't it a bit weird to have it on one historic day, but then celebrate/reenact the events of the 26th on this new day that has a different historic meaning.

Just from a practical point of view, most dates I've seen suggested land in May, May in many southern states is getting petty shitty weatherise, any date should be in summer, but suggestions like Jan 1st are pretty crappy like really no one goes to work on Jan 1st

And before Christmas is shitty, everyone is just amping for summer holidays and many business trying to get things done before Christmas, as a tradie I'm flat out before Christmas everyone wats everything done before then, i know all other tradies are the same.

From a practical point of view late Jan is perfect, we have had that big summer break, have winded down back into work, but its still nice to have a long weekend when the weather is actually good to do things outside.

PS. Too hot to work today :D

stunet's picture
stunet Friday, 25 Jan 2019 at 10:10am

@ID,

I'm really not sure that having a public holiday that lines up with an event really matters. I mean, we've celebrated the Queen's Birthday long weekend since forever and it sure as hell isn't the Queen's actual birthday. No-one questions that.

Also, when looking through the timeline of Australia's history there are so many events that go into the development of the nation that it all becomes a bit arbitrary. Much easier to choose a date, any date, though as you say the warmer months would be better, and have it represent all the events, all the milestones, all the people.

indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming Friday, 25 Jan 2019 at 10:19am

I thought it was all more than the public holiday though?

I believe this year the public holiday is on the Monday 28th.

But i assume they do all the celebrations/reenactments tomorrow (26th)

So assume its still an issue for those who want a date change.

Personally id be cool with a change back to the Monday closest to the 26th for the public holiday(believe this is how it was for ages) and then celebrate/reenactments on the public holiday, but on the calendar the official Australia day always marked as the 26th.

Obviously some years the public holiday would still fall on the 26th.

Anyway, a quick digression about Captain Cook...

Not many people realise that it was Cooky, not Shane Stedman or Mark Warren, who delivered Australia's first surf report. On the 28th April, 1770, Cooky tried to land at Woonona, just north of the Gong. It would've been the first place the Brits set foot on Australia, but alas he was beaten back by a good Autumn swell.

Cooky subsequently dialled it in: “...we found that we nowhere could affect a landing by reason of the great surf which beat every where upon the shore.”

But 2IC Zachary Hicks had a better command on the lingo: “Ye captain went away in ye yawl, but could not land for ye surf."

That arvo they were becalmed in the shallow the bay that comprises Woonona and Bellambi slowly drifting south towards a dangerous offshore reef. Cooky said they were "within some breakers that lay to the south of us.”

Those breakers were Bellambi Reef, otherwise known as The Verge, and buried deep in Cooky's journal is a story about a dreadlocked local who told the blowins to fuck off.

Fortunately a southerly hit and filled the sails, the crew fucked off to the north, and the next morning they landed at Botany Bay.

Hey True Blue, can you bear the load
Will you tie it up with wire

Do you really care

All this you could live with but not while denying most productive prime Trainline
Qld labor have halted 2 biggest Qld Cities Airtrain link from 2016 >2038

Tram is more expensive & slows city to Hospitals/Arenas/Uni's/Beaches/Airports

Oz Cities offer tourists up to 30 km's free CBD bus/ferry/tram/train rides.
GC Tram is not free & is without doubt Oz largest Commuter Tax.

Best advice to those in Beach Towns with Tram proposals.
Your surf access points are under attack from Day 1.(Unite to secure Beach Access)
You'll lose heaps of age old prime Mountains to beach routes as we have.(Gone!)

We're all exhausted but we're not gonna surrender our surf access without a fight!

Yes! We are still fighting off Spit Master Plan/GCCC corruption over CST.
Latest news that CST is secretly driving SMP. (They admitted same to me at stalls!)
More blatant (No Cst in SMP) Whiteshoes are now embedded as Civic Servants.

Maybe I'm late to this, maybe early, but the body of Matthew Flinders has been discovered under Euston station in London, on the news today. (Site used to be a cemetary). Phenomenal navigator, and that one has pretty much made my Australia Day. I do love nautical history and the tales of the exploits of those guys, that kind of discovery vast distances away over an ocean from home... surfers do similar things today!

Stu great story, I wonder if De Vlamingh did similar when landing Gerritt Collaert's party on 5th January 1697 at the surf break Cables? Given it was summer the waves might have been pretty small there. I wonder if it was a rocky shoreline then like it is now?

Re: Stunet's digression, how's Cook's actual journal entries?

This from the day after, 29 April 1770:

"Saw as we came in on both points of the bay Several of the natives and afew hutts, Men women and children on the south shore abreast of the Ship to which place I went in the boats in hopes of speaking with them accompaned by Mr Banks Dr Solander and Tupia- as we approached the shore they all made off except two Men who seem'd resolved to oppose our landing - as soon as I saw this I orderd the boats to lay upon their oars in order to speake to them but this was to little purpose for neither us nor Tupia could understand one word they said. we then threw them some nails beeds &Ca a shore which they took up and seem'd not ill pleased with in so much that I thout that they beckon'd to us to come a shore but in this we were mistaken for as soon as we put the boat in they again came to oppose us upon which I fired a musket between the two which had no other effect than to make them retire back where bundles of thier darts lay and one of them took up a stone and threw at us which caused my fireing a second Musquet load with small shott and altho' some of the shott struck the man yet it had no other effect than to make him lay hold of a Shield or target to defend himself emmediatly after this we landed which we had no sooner done than they throw'd two darts at us this obliged me to fire a third shott soon after which they both made off, but not in such haste but what we might have taken one, but Mr Banks being of opinion that the darts were poisoned made me cautious how I advanced into the woods"

indo-dreaming the fact & figures are part of the deal when writing to council.
I also prefer Brochure style to best collate the stats into timelines.
I seldom stray from Timeline form as I can doubleback, add & check misplaced stats.
Storytelling time/Drawing Maps pains my hand muscles & eyes... In my dreams!

Ma Mama weer all crazee now!

Like any stat if it appears alone it's 100% fact. Up to /around are likewise just that!
I imagine Dated/Events would be hard to falsify as they can be checked instantly.
Although there's no shortage of misplaced dates with many online Timelines.

[Yes] I do clear a path through WSR open Tip Site.(Xmas Day & NYE) I'm not Well!
[Yes] I'm signing letter right now to regain stolen access to WSR (Not the first!)
[Yes]100% Rapid Transit is Govt spin for 1800's Timetable. (Hard to believe!)
[Yes] SMP has misrepresented & withheld CST plans to the public on own account.
