So the Quicky pro waiting period has started the bank i epic, but the forecast looks crap :(

Great forecast.
If most heats can get 2-3ft reasonably clean waves down the bank, then there will be some great surfing going down.
Think we will see a lot of functional airs.
Sunday and Monday are 4ft winds are looking a bit of an issue but if at during the day they back off like in the morning and arvo then could be some good heats going down and there seems to be some potential on the horizon aswell. Sure airs will be a part of the contest but wouldn't be surprised if barrels get the scores and the veterans might be a big chance this comp ( mick,Joel, taj, Kelly). If will be different from last year where it was 2-3ft at least I hope there are some barrels would be mental
Screw full stops. Who needs 'em? Love it.
The whole things has had the air let out of the balloon before it has even started. Winston, ironically, ruined the party.

2-3ft with a good bank opens the field, will make for some great heats. Just hope Kieren doesn't get too picky. If it's half decent 2-3ft or better, just run those early rounds and don't paint yourself into a corner later on

Cliffie are commas, a good thing when writing!
Please let me know, as I'm still learning, about literature,,,,, :-)
Kelly on a banana?
Wiggley puts out same great spray!
His turns are similar to others but is it the board? The back of the board??
Sharkman are you there ?, can you explain please;)
Taj said "Horney" to an interviewer?
If he was Chris Gayle????
He was talking his body wasn't he?
I'm getting a little bit of a thing for Connor Coffins surfing.
When Rhythm dropped their latest dribble video and my brain hurt from all the flat turn hippy shit* I turned to Highline and a couple of other Coffin carve porn favourites for therapy.
wait till he hits Cloudbreak.
* At another time I would love that clip, but after surfing powerful walls for a few days the windchop twinny laybacks and rockerless trimming weren't cutting it.
Ken oath, blowy.
I haven't taken much notice of him in the past but saw that feature while they went on hold.
Would love to see him at solid bells and jbay.
Aaaaaaaaand Jordy imploded! Someone had their crystal ball out with the paragraph written above his video to the other day....
Has that Igarashi kid got springs for legs or what, it'll be interesting to see some of the new flyweights tackle chopes and the like.
Personally im loving the way these young guys are taking it to the pros, making it real interesting.
Taj/Wilko in the water now, good heat coming up with Wright/de Souza (one can hope). Pity about Calinan/Toledo though :(
Liking AB, awesome stuff ACE;)
How good is Stu Kennedy surfing, best heat in years imo and on a firewire,Slater would be kicking himself for wrong board choice.
Yeah totally, he is getting so much projection and speed off the bottom turn with it.
Slaying world champs with quaint features like double flyers and a bat tail...
THAT first turn of Kennedy's was outrageous. I find, stylistically, Medina's cold funky on his backhand.
Hmmm, where to start ... how about, with the simple fact I'm a kook and judge people from weird perspectives. OK, so with that, I was at the contest this afternoon, so here's a few of my ah, observations:
1. Stu Kennedy was under scored ... kid surfed solid on rail. Was so totally obviously stoked, fully frothing with the win, and you could see he just wanted to go celebrate with his mates. But, he instead hung around and signed '000's of autographs had a zillion pics taken and generally, and what look to me to genuinely, wanted to give back to the fans. A few obvious people close to him, big hugs, high fives and some genuine back slapping amount the crowd too ... be Stu, not once that I saw, turned his back or overlooked a single grom, single person ... he just worked his way through the line. That speaks volumes to an old kook like me ...
2. Medina. What an upstart snobby, I think I'm so good, brush ya type of off little shit. Well after he's gotten changed, post his loss to Stu... he and Charlie walked from the competitor area up the stairs past the surf club ... people wanting a pic, or autograph being brushed, Charile storming past, Medina following, until he stopped for a chic to get a pic, and then he did a few for others, but almost instantly developed this "I'm a hero, you all think I'm shit hot, you want me type persona" with his cheesy beady eyes and real sleaze look at the girls. Oh, and totally over scored too ... guys standing near me, all thought the same. He surf THE wave, I mumbled "probably a mid 7, 8 at best" ... "yep" "yep" echo from a few blokes, the scores drop... Hmmm, "bullshit" I though out aloud. "Fuckin what score did he get" bloke next to me asked, his mate goes "a fucking 8.53 ... fuck., no way it's worth that" ... we all look at each other and shake our heads.
3. Parko ... I saw something that is, in my opinion, absolutely fucking priceless and genuine aussie good bloke stuff... In short, post the heat loss with Toledo and Coffin, Parko was hangin in the shorey giving young grommets a turn on his board. Yep, his comp board! and here he is pushing the kids, little kids at that, all under probably 5 years of age by the look of it, and here's Parko pushing them into little waves on his comp board. There were a dozen of them, and from what I saw, they each got a go ... he was high fiving them, really sharing their stoke. I mean, c'mon folks, how fuckin stoked will those kids be! What a legend. Good onya Parko.
4. Toledo ... looked to be surfing WAY more on rail and powerful. No where near as 'flippy flappy' as last year. Solid turns, but seemed to lack some flare? Dunno what it was, but he was surfing fast, and maybe that took away from the flare, but it didn't seem like the fins were free or out the back. The 10, well, can't say it felt like a WOW, that's a 10 ... that air was very functional, and he flowed out of it really well, and the turns that followed definitely had more flare that was missing on other waves, but a 10, nah ... mid 9 at best, but a 10 nope, not for my money.
5. Wilko. Well, if Medina was getting 8's, Wilko should have been given 9's ... yeah yeah, I know, different heat and all, but ... Wilko was so much more vertical, and so much more solid. Bit kooky looking, but Wilko was going for it, he was committed to every turn and it showed, but the scores didn't follow. I wonder how much of that was the crowd, who didn't seem a vocal for him. Dunno.
WSL, you seriously need to think about adding more ambiance to the amphitheater . Lulls in the waves, shouldn't just be filled with commentary dribble, or silence. What about some music? What about some crowd participation? Like the footy, or soccer ... basketball. Where is the buzz?
OK, that's my school report done. Time for a beer.
Stu and Wilko took charge today, so good to watch.
Maybe it was KS's plan all along just to use this year subtly advertising his new shapes, wavepools, films and threads????
Have to say I thought Gab's first 8 was over scored, 5 meh turns on a shoulder high wave then 2 relatively vert cracks at the end, judges were being tough all afternoon I thought... until wonder kid's first wave that is...
Toledo, stu and coffins rail game were the standouts for sure
Good calls wing nut. I was there pretty much all day on and off and given that some heats were so slow a bit of music or entertainment wouldn't go amiss. Personally I would prefer more wave action so give me best 3 waves again rather than long gaps where no one takes anything.
With a couple of exceptions one of which you mentioned above I thought the judging was pretty spot on compared to many events last year. Toledos first 9 seemed to high as well as Medinas. And yeah Stu Kennedy was going for it for good reward. Saw Strider crack a couple of big turns tonight after the comp finished. Didn't know he ripped the small stuff so hard
I was there a couple of years ago and they had Nickleback blaring louder than any nightclub I've ever been to.
Truly punishing.
The music and entertainment at the footy sucks (AFL).
I just want the game.
But there are a lot more gaps in the action at the surfing so they probably need something.
Seeing groms and other characters lurking in the water near the point, seems to me a great place to cool off and get the hand-plane out. Sneak into a coupla runners.
Would keep the plebs entertained too. Win win.
Tell KP I'm available.
As for muzak, I'd recommend Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass' entire oeuvre on high rotation. Though only during lulls, between heats etc. When the wave action is on, let's hear some Yakety Sax. ESPECIALLY in the finals! Work with me, people.

Bingo wingnut!
Stu getting underscored in R3 imo
FU Medina ya uppity c*nt
Still hard to see anyone beating Toledo. Rail and air game, frigging hell
indo-dreaming wrote:I actually thought the scoring has been pretty spot on this comp.
For sure ID.
Just a minute a 7.17 for Joel first wave.
What a let down for the judging IMO...

Stu scores 8.5 for fuck off wave in R3? Underscore!
This fellow, Stuart Kennedy, really is killing it.
Shit yeah Benski, beautiful surfing.
Think I mentioned it earlier somewhere but those boards are really solid underfoot.
You never talk to the first person twice!!
Apparently ;)
Yeah man that board looks unreal under his feet.
welly welly
mon
Yeah I watched that last heat tonight on the beach and the site announcer was saying that Stus board was 5'7" x 18 1/2" x 2 1/3" and 26.6 litres. And that he was 71kg. That's quite a bit of foam for a 5'7" and it sure was flying through the flat sections and gliding through those roundhouse cuttys. Compared to Seabass catching rails and sinking was a vast difference. Pretty keen to try one of those boards myself now in a much bigger size of course. Also makes me wonder even the more how KS would have gone if he rode the same model as Stu instead of the banana
Me too Indo..except not everyday Johanne Defay does an inverted nose pick.....pffft 7 my arse
Yeah seabass looked like he was surfing in molasses on the screen. Looked like a lovely arvo down there today.
The incoming tide is making this frustrating to watch.
Would love to see JJF and Stu be able to unload properly but they're not getting the opportunities.
Has anyone got barrelled this event?
I don't think I've seen one.
Wow.. an 8.3 for Stuey's last wave? I think that was a little generous. No disrespect intended - he's been ripping all event, and it'd be incredible to see him in the final - but I don't quite understand how he got that score (unless the approaching hooter bumps up the number because of the enhanced pressure?).
Points per manoeuvre.
Funny, Stu gets underscored imo in earlier heats. Then gets that 8.3 against JJF, nice wave but definitely generous. Good result for JJF but he's gotta be a little pissed
