Big Wave World Tour
@luv- the- mid...its not about the contest its the global exposure ,and the damage that follows it ..you obviously don't give a fuck cause you and your mates are too scared of sharks to come here ...keep it that way
C'mon mate, bit of an over-reaction. So you don't agree with LTN's post, try and retain some proportion and keep your emotions in check.
@luv-the-mid - I don't agree with you there because of the evidence. We know that the surf media creates an influx of surf travel to the places they turn the spotlight on. We've seen this in Indo, Hawaii, the East Coast of Oz, Mexico and heaps of other examples. My argument, which you may have missed and is my opinion, is that from an environmental management perspective many locations on the Eyre are susceptible to lasting ecological damage from lack of infrastructure and an increase in surfers trying to gain access to remote waves. There is a notable increase in professional surfers coming to the Eyre to get footage and there's been an increase in illegal camping, dune degradation and vegetation loss too.
I'm sure people come here with the right intentions, and i'm sure locals are responsible too, who's not going to bash a path down the dunes to a surf break when it's 40 degrees, the fly's are hectic and the waves pumping?
Cow Reef is the plan-b, how much more sense does it make to hold this contest at an established big wave surf region? All the facilities are there, infrastructure to almost every beach and high rainfall to help with re vegetation efforts. It's a no-brainer and I don't accept the supposition that an event like this will not create an negative impact on environmental management initiatives. I'm no expert, to be sure, but I do understand in a more complex way the simple statement from a prominent farmer of Penong when asked if he thought a surf competition was a good idea: "Nah mate, more people, more problems".
well there you go s.a. surfers ....you all been told...you all ride east coast pop outs.....real s.a. surfers ride handshaped surfboards........
dion Atkinson get ya shit together man......those east coast popouts may not be any good for ya.......
Josiah...when ya stop towing and start paddling....you will be a real surfer even though you've already paddled monster surf !
luv the mid would you like to hold a bwwt comp at supertubes ? caves pt would be a top viewing spot for spectators and awesome for the media to film........and lets get moose cooking the Barbie.......
farkin good to see West Coast surfers finally standing up for whats right, our old boys fought hard to keep this place protected. we got nothing to gain and everything to loose holding the comp here. the petition says it all.
And to the wombat trying to run this comp, your just caught in the headlights searching for fame, glory and I'm sure a few dollars, the sad thing is all your going to find is more loneliness because no body likes you coz your just a silly old wombat.
@middy what date is the meeting ?
505 votes against .....fantastic.
Mike hunt , rusty Long, anonymous, Mr Jiffy Daschmuck, Mr Triggs Wog..what a joke! How many of these people ARE real? Seems so of the other locals..as in people who actually live in Streaky want the comp..just read the Pt Lincoln times! lets get this meeting on..can't wait!!
Haha. Jiffy dashmuck. Classic!
Jiffy, this comp will be stopped. Accept it.
just wondering out of all people having their say who[still] enjoys surfing nice waves with only a few crew about because this one of the reasons I live here and want my kids to enjoy the same. the spot light is not always the right light
Great to surf wid few guys great to share wid a few more just awesome to live in Gods own land.
look like someone kickin up a fuss about the petition further up the chain.
dosent matter wat spoilt kids think the weight of public opinion and the wishes of the primary resource users being the surfing community does count.
As for anonamous votes well maybe the proposer and a few of his alias email names could possibly try throw a cat among the pigions. Nice try anyway and all the best :)
Old fatty fin been doing this shit for years. He loves conflict weather it be fishing or surfing as long as he is the centre of attention.
He behaves a spoilt little pig.
The only thing is he doesn't realise nobody is afraid of a 100kg of lard unless its coming straight at ya on a jet ski.
I won't be surprised if the comp gets the nod and we sell off one of the west coasts best assets to the global corporates. It's seems to be the Australian way! brake the mild vote no!
Not a bad blow this one at fatty Finn. Hopefully young jet will have a patch for you to go bully him off of when it drops out!
Leave me out of it wcgland. i am as real as you, and yet to sign anything as far as I know. We don,t want Big wave tour here in WA either thanks Brutus. And if they think they can pick paddle days to run a comp
for Cow bombie good luck .
Carn fatty Finn how's about a couple bites.
A story from Scotland. A few years ago oniell and the powers to be set there eyes on smoe cold water waves in scotland. No local surfers wanted this but one overweight guy.coincidentel or not the powes to be ended up smoothing over the local surfers and they helped run the event and some got paid and they got the contest they didnt want.
Here we have a potential situation forming. ASP what we have is not for sale.
So surfing community of the west coast be awear of smooth taking asp guys trying to talk you around when they arrive to prospect the coast.
There is nothing sustainable in the current corporate world's modus operandi, i.e. continuous growth.
If the ASP has it's way, the EP will just be another casualty in the long list of capitalist doctrine. Remember this; while the ASP is a Not for Profit organisation, (or at least it was before the ZoSea takeover) ZoSea and the ASP/BWWT sponsors are all about profit. These corporations are not running their business' from the beautiful heart of charity.
The process needed to address the issues raised for the EP is continuous improvement, and continuous improvement does not always mean bigger is better.
I found this article about who ZoSea actually is, and that in itself was not as easy as one would think.
http://www.boardistan.com/?p=32675
What becomes rather obvious in all this is that ZoSea Media’s angle for the “future of surfing†will most likely be as “sports entertainment.†A play no doubt inspired by the work Dana White has done with his little UFC franchise. Own the events, own the performers, own the rights to the performers performances, and sell it all to the highest bidder.
Is this what we really want for the so far relatively untouched pristine beauty of the Eyre Peninsula?. I for one would hate to see my home land destroyed for a few measly short term $$$$ for an even smaller group of greedy men.
Not for profit organization, Ha. Just means overpaid jobs with perks for the boys.
Pigs at the trough.
@shaun, my point exactly, this is not about the love of surfing, this is about the love of money.
That is gold zeph
I think maybe this will go ahead with or without local surfers support.Local community support is another thing and we have not heard anything from that side of the fence. It will be pitched towards these people more so than the surfing community. The coast has a very rich untapped commodity in regards to uncrowded world class surf which is becoming a rare thing in this day and age.A few disgruntled voices will not deter them from deciding what they think is best for the majority of the areas people. The fragility of the coastal environment argument is a valid one and is important as is any environmental issue that we all are faced with but unfortunately with the newly elected government it all go's out the window.I think you guy's should direct the argument towards it not being a viable destination simply for the fact that it very rarely gets to be over 20ft and clean enough to surf.I fear if you keep taking the enviro route they will steamroll you's.
rarely gets over 20ft and clean enough to surf........pretty much what was said at the start of the noodles comp vid........
'may be another 10 years before we see it like this again'
JEFFIE: Will we pretend too have a good character when the asp reps show.
HYDE: Yeah we will be nice to everyone and show our charming side.
If they do get it going i will be holding the first annual mako shark fishing competition that same week. The competition area will be from speeds point to fishermans paradise. Big international guests, big prizes great for the town. Maybe we could team up Jeff? I can
Already smell $$
jeffie is a mean cook........and could do the catering for both events
osprey pie anyone.
For all the hoopla and carry on..the petition has only managed 500 participants..and lets be honest..10 if not 20% so 50-100 of those are not real 15-30 of those not from Australia..and then there would be est 2000 surfers in SA..So say 1000 for-1000 against..and that's being generous for those for. Then go ask all the other WC community members what they think. Most will say better for local jobs..better for local communitys. Get the natural beauty of the coast for all to see..Out of all the coast boys..who loved see-ing Slater? or Joel? or Mick? or TC? MM? is that something that inspires you or you will remember for the rest of your life? be honest..now imagine denyng your kids that chance. Surf comps don't go around forever..even at J-BAY for fucks sake!!
If you so hate the crowd factor are you afaid of boat people?my guess would be yes!!
Then go ask all the other WC community members what they think. Most will say better for local jobs..better for local communitys.
By: "wcgland"
out of interest how will the local community benefit? what new jobs will be created? coming off the election we've heard alll the politicains answer these questions regularly, what is your take
Why use Kelly Slater as a selling point when this is a BWWT contest not a WCT? Sure he *may* be able to surf in it but realistically he won't. Instead there'll be guys you've barely heard of and wouldn't recognise in the carpark, Joao de Macedo, Alex Martins, Gabriel Villaran (taken from BWWT website)
There'll be just 24 surfers, none travelling with entourage like CT surfers, who'll fly in the day before and fly out the day after. Like Sandpsit said, what real benefit to the community will there be? The Streaky Pub will get booked out for two nights and the bakery will sell out of cheese & bacon rolls - big doop.
The 'community' would receive more coin from a bucks weekend.
Why would the surfers of the WC want to sell out the coast. Suddenly some community are all interested in surfers and surfing ! I thought we were not that important. Now we have a voice that will be heard.
And we are not going to hand it over for a fist full of lollies. The surfing world needs to understand that this coast is worth preserving as a destination free from corperatization for All traveler's and surfers, recreational or professional .
And to the professional surfers do you recognise that this place would be a great destination to have a break ?
The ASP need to have it rammed down their throats that we cannot be bought. The lifestyles of the ocean using folk over here has never been about the money. We are here because we live the pristine untouched and unfucked coastline and wish it to stay that way for generations to come!
I think JESSIE J sums it up
" It's not about the money, money, money.
We don't want your money, money, money.
We just wanna make the world dance( that's you Jeffie).
Forget about the price tag.
It ain't about the kaching, kaching.
It ain't about the B bling, B bling
We just wanna make the world dance ( that's you Jeffie)
Forget about the price tag!
Best of luck to the boys going to the meeting tomorrow and knowing you all personally I realise that relying on your looks and charm would see us dead and buried straight away so I hope you have something else up your sleeve. Maybe start dancing and fatty fin will get on the first plane to Madagascar but seriously go get em!
It ain't about the Bbling Bbling
It's my wife's music not mine I swear
JEFFIE: Hey remember how we were going to do that punch and judy puppet show Hyde.
HYDE: Yeah that would be epic . We could run a clip on here
JEFFIE: yeah wat a fat cash cow lets make some money
HYDE: Can we swellnet ? Can we can we ?
Here's todays wave of the day headline and caption at coastal watch,
LINE-UP OF THE DAY: September 20, 2013
Greg Long and a Likely Big Wave World Tour Location, South Australia

this is second time in as many weeks that there has been reference to big waves and contests in SA by the shmuck.I think the secret is out, and has been since the seventies, controlled progression is going to have to be the answer, dont get me wrong, i fully support the petition against the shmuck/wcgland which ever one he is today or tomorrow, but the more the place is in the headlines of sites like this, people will want to come and check it out, shit i hate cold water, but all this hype is getting me organised to come over with the family for a holiday, mm cant wait
I'm not sure what you mean by second time gromfull, haven't you been reading this thread?? To me it seems obvious Smux is playing the propaganda game knowing Coastalwatch only run things that serve the status quo. No forums or commentary over there, just read and obey, same as it ever was. "Cockwatch, bringing the corporate phallus to you"
I'd be keen to hear how the meeting goes today. It'd be great if who ever goes gives a report of it here.
derra83, dont you understand english, thought it was quite clear, twice in two weeks ive seen photos posted by the shmuck of the wave of the day, big waves in SA, is that clear enough for you.
Any feed back on the meeting would be interesting, will the shmuck have body guards in tow, or will he sort m out himself
Either way it's a win win, we get no contest or we get to riot.
best of luck with the meeting jeffie tomic dokic.
so the streaky bay council meeting was held today, can any one give a brief of the happenings?
from the asap/bwwt did a rep show.
feedback around the town from locals, main concerns that were voiced from the enviro side
zephatalien ....what do you know ?
swellnet team ..know anything ?
who is celebrating tonight .
a few local surfers were approached by a local council member just before the meeting asking us to join in and help with the comp we expressed our concerns and let it be known there was no chance of us ,or a majority of local surfers to have any part of the comp. that is were we left it for now
All Quiet on the Western Front.
Speaking of the "Western Front" ben I'm reminded of that stirring speech Churchill gave his people,
"We shall fight them on the beaches, we shall fight them on the landing grounds, we shall fight them in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight them in the hills; we shall never surrender,"
this topic has had over 14,000 views. is this a record amount swellnet ?
I think the meeting has gone very well..and now that all the hype/paranoia/environmental BULLSHIT has been gone through and we know what will be actually happening we should all get behind it!!bring it on
For all members of the far west and mid west surf associations Gary Linden has made himself available to address our members at streaky bay on Friday night. Please make yourselves available to be at the pub by 5:30 pm.
It needs to be made clear that this bloke has shown great respect to our members and west coast surf community and does not want to run the comp if no one wants it. So come and show respect and hear the guy out. If after the facts are known the surf community does not want this comp then your reps will do everything in our powers to stop it if they try to keep going ahead without our consent.
Please come with the intention to show respect and listen. Gary is happy to meet and greet you all on a personal level to hear your concerns.
But most importantly show up!
I’m not for this contest but I have to agree with jeffy/ smux etc. the environmental argument is a little weak on its own. Yeh it is fragile drylands but it is hardly pristine with farms just 100s of metres behind the coastline, and with the council obviously having a pro development stance, they will think nothing of a little damage for a little gain. Jeffy continually challenges it is about surfers not having their waves crowded out, and nobody bites because it is an un PC stance to take. Well I will bite, yes it is about not crowding out what I believe are relatively crowded waves already. Yeh Jeffy can surf everyday on his own with his jet ski, but for most people they can only get to the name breaks that are pretty crowded considering the cold, the wind, the hardship getting and staying there, the sharks, and the weeks you can go without getting a surf, unlike the east coast. And even with his jet ski and knowledge jeffy still shows up at the name breaks enough to piss everyone off, if its so uncrowded you would think it would be easy to avoid each other.
It is the hardship and isolation that creates a surfing culture that is suspicious, maybe paranoid of outsiders and fair enough they have done the cold hard winters only to be crowded out by east coast hotshots who can scab any wave because they are fit from competing for waves everyday at home. Well the locals do not want to hassle and compete for waves they have developed their own line-ups that work for them. This makes them uncompetitive in the wider surfing community, but a pleasure to surf with. I think this is another reason Jeffy wants to promote the place to inspire his almost, but not quite competitive enough son. That’s why he loves it when Slater, Fanning and whoever else he named comes over. Personally I couldn’t give a shit about these guys and whether they come or not, and I believe a lot of the west coast would feel the same. But Jeffy is so star struck he cannot understand that others may not have the same obsession (Jeff you may think the Bra boys etc. love you but they are just using you up as an easy way to by pass localism). I find it quite hilarious that Jeff condemns localism then when an argument gets difficult he pulls the your not a real local card.
The west coast culture is unique because it is one of the last places left that has not sold its soul in the mainstreaming of surfing. I doubt whether the ASP or ZoSea (whatever that is) will respect this too much as surf culture is different everywhere and difficult to understand from an outside position. The west coast is an extreme version of Australian old school culture where you keep your mouth shut about spots, and bragging in uncool. ASP/ZoSea are part of the American culture where you talk shit up, and sell sell sell. This difference was made clear to me when recently reading an old Mentawai article where the Kandui boys where excited about installing a webcam but the Aussie skipper author (forgot the name) thought it was a terrible idea. Surf culture is different everywhere and not everyone cares about the top 40, I doubt I could even name 10, that does not mean I don’t love surfing as much as some wide eyed grommet who knows all the names. Others have mentioned it already, and its probably a bit late but I think the anti contest people need to concentrate more on the unique culture slant rather than just the environment stuff. I am an old school greenie, but environment arguments have been so overused (often wrongly and cheaply) to justify everything recently I just switch off, so those that don’t care will give suitable lip service and move on.
And if all that fails, back to old school self policing and rioting, it has worked for a long time now, keep it up boys.
PS No offense Jeffy this is not a cheap pay out but you need to google Autism / Aspergers. Many great men have/had it and so have many obnoxious fuckheads, its how you deal with it that makes a great man.
PSS. Mr. luvthemid, everyone is not riding local boards because generally they are shit and overpriced ie. same price as a good shapers board. With the exception of country areas what local boards are there anyway? Cutloose are gone and genesis are made in china.
@ wcgland/Jeff Schmucker - The environmental "bullshit" comment/s come from a very conceited and biased perspective... yours. If the competition does go ahead we will see the impact of more people fucking the coastline. Full stop. End of story. Accept it as reality.
I'm done, like Mr. Cole/Brutus I see this forum and issue in a different light and am done trying to convey my beliefs through this medium.
I encourage anyone with an agenda to do with the competition to contact Gary Lindon and make your voice heard. Do this in the next week is my advice, as well as make it the informal meeting on Friday. Here's Gary's ASP contact:
So good luck again, see-ya out there.
*Inserts head into sand*
Streaky Bay District Council Minutes August 2013 Indicates Jeff Schmucker has spoken to council about a proposed ASP Big Wave Comp. Here's the link:
https://www.streakybay.sa.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/Minutes%202013-...
At this stage it is just a proposal. It would be an annual event and part of an ASP sanctioned Big Wave Tour. There will be a stakeholder meeting to be held later in the month.
