A few interesting stories on shark attacks and near misses on the Shark Shield report so I thought I would start this thread. Don't want to trivialize the subject as people have had their lives taken or changed forever by what can happen. I thought it might serve as an educational purpose by hearing others experiences so we may all learn from them and hopefully avoid it happening to us.

One of them was a mate of mine named Hazey.
He had been surfing at Castles, a notoriously sharky wave in the bay at Cactus.
Several hundred metres offshore the wave breaks before reforming into Inside Castles making a long left with several sections. The wave has been the scene of several attacks and near misses over the years including the local known as "Sharkbait" who had been attacked more than once.
Gerry Lopez is another who came very close to being attacked out there and vowed to never surf Cactus again after his near miss.
Well Hazey was surfing out the back with another bloke named Steve when out of the blue he was launched into the air still on his board by a huge force from below.
A shark had rammed him with a direct hit straight up into the air! In a moment it was gone but soon returned to the stunned Hazey and started biting him and his board. Hazey instinctively put his arms out to protect himself but both his arms ended up in its mouth. As the jaws closed down his arms could have easily been severed, but several teeth on the sharks lower jaw had become dislodged and imbedded in the board leaving his upper arms with massive injuries, but the vital inner arms where major arteries run were not majorly damaged. This probably saved his life.
By this time Steve had reacted and in a rush of adrenalin and pure ballsy courage he threw himself onto the sharks back and started gouging at the sharks eyeballs, eventually feeling one pop and the shark departed.
Steve got the two surfboards together and got himself and Hazey on and started the long paddle to shore.
Then they were both thrown into the air as the shark rammed them a third time before disappearing again. They continued to make their way closer to shore and the shark nudged them again. Steve told me he thought he really must of pissed it off when he popped its eye.
Finally they we're just a metre from shore when the shark made its fifth and final appearance. It beelined towards them and the shore while they stood in waist deep water with their boards. The sharks mouth was just rapidly opening and closing like one of those wind up sets of false teeth. The boys separated and put their hands on either side of it's body and held it on a 90 degree angle to the beach as they made the final steps to the safety of the sand.
Hazey was rushed to Ceduna hospital and then flown to Adelaide for micro surgery on his shredded arms.
Steve ended up receiving a bravery award and they both sold their story to 60 minutes and made $50,000 each out of it!
It was quite a story!

A surfer has been hit, killed and disappeared by a fifteen-foot Great White at Granites, twenty clicks out of Streaky Bay, South Australia, seven hundred clicks north-west of Adelaide.

Mainstream media is reporting a man has been “seriously injured” but they ain’t even close.

The surfer, whose name we can’t release, was waiting for a set out the back at Granites, a long and friendly lefthander, when the Great White attacked, leaving only his board and the stub of his legrope.

Boardrider's Sharky Progress Report...
Further research has outed 2 more scenarios that play out time again...
* "Was just sitting out the back Waiting!" = tbb can actually Translate this to mean (5 mins+)
* "Only just Paddled out to sit up...then bang!" = tbb can Translate that to mean ( instant)
Yes...'so far' as amazing as it seems...these are two common realities...exactly why tbb is sharing!

Correct...these keep coming up to stoke up tbb's last study paper above.
Promise! tbb is not shaping the narrative...just woteva google spits out is being fed out here!
Meaning this research ain't that fruitful for tbb or any to contrive...hard to dig out!

eg: Pro Surfers...
Beth was "Out the Back patiently waiting for waves..." lying across her board with arm dangling."
Mick : "I had camped in same up point J Bay Spot for 5mins & was about to move on...Bang!"

Here's the current Shark smart tips for boardriders until we can lock in more data...

1. When paddling out to (Middle Break / Main Peak)
(a) Don't paddle straight out unabated into lineup
(b) Try to stop or break up yer paddle : Dip yer Leggie Soup Laddle > on way out.
(c) Never come to a halt & Sit in Apex break Zone...> Turn away & paddle across from shoulder!
(d) Important not to trawl / chum the inside burley out into sweet Spot ...(See next)
(e) The blending of inside chum with the sweet spot > brews an Exotic blend that Invites the Shark
(f) Never ever leggie loop a 'Bait Trail' back out thru the lineup to chum the sweet spot.
(g) Crew must never Gravy train a Bait Slurry conveyor belt to hot wire yer Dayglow lineup...SHARK!
(h) Never stoke a lineup like this on the back of a High Tide to lure in the Shark from afar...

2. "Was just sitting there waiting...!" ( Never just sit in world's #1 Life Cycle )
(a) Sitting out 'One Set' away from Peak is Ok
(b) Two sets (5 mins) affords fish to hub yer board...( By accounts : Officially Shark Bait )
(c) Either Jump off yer Board to clear yer critters.
(d) Paddle briefly away & abruptly sit (Clear yer Paylode) > Then paddle back or near if ya must.
(e) Can even pop or Flick yer Board to clear yer guppies!
(f) Simply paddling around won't clear yer problem it just follows you.
(g) Failing to clear yer lot only grows larger by the minute.
(h) Burley Gravy train need not be visual > just enough to chum the shark into attack mode.

3. Out the back!
(a) Don't trawl Sweet Spot Juice from Middle Hot Spot > Outer Bank Peak
(b) Repeat the sit up rule (Half Way) to break up yer Leggie trawled Shark Food chain
(c) Again...try to steer wide > Sit > then back to claim yer Outer peak! (Each second set!)

Summary...the idea is for surfers to throw sharks off the scent...
All too easy for crew to hot wire burley thru whole Inner > Mid > Outer lineup...
Each Grom trawls Hodads like turtles...to the Honey Pot...Wot!

Is that Shark Smart?...well durr! All cool with that!
OMG! Just whistle for the Shark will ya!
Yep! Crew all know...Shark comes alive to yer Hot Spot & will bully you out or take you out.

In other words...don't surf up a shit storm that stirs up the Grey Army.
Each surfer slime-balls the last > whipping up a Glowing Green Gravy Train...Shark is lickin' it's lips!
Just skate down yer local shower of power fungal slide...'Oh that ol' Green Fluro slippery dip!'
Well that's where Huey spills his Lime Green Breaka Milk Shake...whips up Sharks into a frenzy.

Be Shark Smart...If yer on a good wicket...throw the Shark off the scent...got it!
All here are well aware that Human (vs) Beast are fighting for same Honey Pot.
Crew are smart enough to out fox the Shark from the prize!

Surfers often play down a Secret Spot by Surfing Poorly or Bitchin' about it...exactly like that!
Like...wind's not gonna swing 'round today...tides all wrong...best ya all pack it in now...losers!

If not...wise up to the warning signs of what Shark victims are saying... that's rolled gold advice!
Repeat...tbb is no expert but the above observations keep repeating enough to take stock!
Pre attack "Observation" is actually rare as near all attention is focused on "Horror / Heroism!"

tbb is not saying that's a bad thing but do know this much for sure...
If surfers were to share a Timetabled Map of moments before...we'd be Miles ahead with mitigation.
Easy for tbb to say...doubt if many want to relive the Horror or associate > copping a Media backlash!
tbb gets that & respects people's privacy...we just gotta look longer & harder for better answers.

Same raw prawns keep lighting up the charts...so it may not just be Boardrider'z bad luck!

Just jumped in or was Treading water (5 mins) in the deep + Swimming 5mins Trailing Burley!

Crew can see a pattern is emerging for both swimmer / boardrider alike.

eg: Just dived in to check anchor or Feed the Dolphins...that was last thing he did..

We're dealing with Mother Nature's most complex lifecycle...we gotta get up to speed to chill.
There are no easy answers...we must timetable Blue Planet's most majestic lifecycle for all to share.
Sooner we get started, the safer for all us sea serpents to surf the Pleasure dome.

We know sharks time bird migrations to pluck low flying stragglers leap to Bat roosts & spy shoreline.
So we know that Drones can mitigate on many other levels other than visual.

Also checking on Drone shadows...tbb swears there is similar Shark reaction with Bird shadows!
Like a Drone may not deter a Shark but tbb noticed a Drone's menacing shadow may distract a shark.
Absurd unintentional folly must not be overlooked...solutions are often enough found as byproduct!
Kinda like moths flock to search lights...fish are attracted by above shadows...see what tbb is saying!
Could a drone "deep / broad shadow" attract then slowly pilot a school of fish along with the shark?
Just saying...costs next to nothing to try! Be worth a trick to refine it for research reason!

Then there is cruise mode which seems a bit more purposeful but changes in an instant:

The difference?

A guess would be that the shark hitting the seal knew it was in the right place for seals and then saw exactly what it was looking for.

A game of snap. It sees the cards match and clicks into instant attack. Not a match, no happy snappy.... mostly.

If a surfer had paddled out from the rocks instead of the seal, it might have gone straight in for a hit if first glance looked seal like. If it looked weird in shape or a bit bigger than normal prey, it probably would probably have hesitated and taken more time to check it out.

Frog is right on the money to bring that to the table...another world it is.
There's another larger overriding factor at play...it's inbuilt in our DNA.
Crew know of it and live it.
Surfers take more risk than all other outdoor folksie types...without doubt!
There is no denying this fact for better or worse.

tbb has uncovered quite a few reports of known GWS in the line up.
Yet same or mates simply go straight back out to exact same impact zone & get attacked.
We all see TV news of boardriders ignoring Shark Sirens & Beach Closures by default.
Now before ya say but...tbb knows what ya thinking...we live double lives.(Good & Bad in everyone!)

Think about this fact...
Surfers make lousy athletes...sitting on arses for 5 minutes + Dead from the waist down.
They also make lousy rule followers...But BIG but! That's not to be mistaken for their worth! Never!

Outside of Rescue crews...Surfers are the most capable to spring into action & rescue people...(Plural)
Any here would back their local surf buddie to haul them outta trouble in a flash...takes a special breed.

Also know & bet that...ya all willingly placed yer lives in equal or greater danger.
Around sharks > Heavy Surf > Rips > Rocks > Stingers > Surfboards > During Searches...the lot!
All just put yer hands up for that without signing off...ya did & all know ya did...go wild about surfing!
Expert Shark rescues > Big Seas rescues...Flood rescues ...Bushfire rescues...swellnet lifeline...on & on.

Just saying for better or worse...Surfer's higher risk level must be factored into any Shark mitigation.
Somehow break the mould of bullet proof Surfers that Kick Flip GWS...Like who does that? WTF.
We may sort Shark behaviour but then how to advise wild cards to call smoko...never gonna happen.
This represents as a spanner in the works as much research is being geared toward Boardriders.
But boardriders are less beachgoer types & more Predatory like the Sharks they go 10 rounds with.

We need to timetable lifecycles of Ocean Divers / Waders / Swimmers / Paddlers / Fishers / Predators.
Now more than ever we have the means to fasttrack an Inshore Lifecycle Timetable...not tbb...others!

On land...We all instinctively know to leave which dangerous beast/s alone, where & at what time.

The first episode of Blue Planet 3 is interesting, there's the shippies footage but also GW's in South Africa hunting fur seals. There's a few of them in a small area, and seals run the gauntlet from rocks to deep water, easy to pick off. Alone they are vulnerable but when the seals group together they start to harass a lurking GW, it doesn't like the attention and starts to head out to sea pursued by seals that are easily within striking distance. Unusual to see a big shark being intimidated, clearly behaviour which the seals have learnt over time.

I remember seeing footage a few years back from the Great Aust. Bight of a GW attacking a seal and tossing it up in the air in an almighty explosion only for the seal to get angry and chase the huge bastard for about 100 meters as it hastily retreated.

I couldnt actually see that footage you note Distracted.
But if the reporting is correct, and they regularly knock of '17 whale sharks in a day', then that's got to be a real threat to whale shark populations doesnt it? Assume those large whale sharks are very old. The Orca's taste for liver would seem a big threat to whale shark survival, or maybe that's just a 'sustainable' level of culling...

Outside the reef sounds more likely, the abc report above said inside, by the jetty after she jumped off, the media are hopeless when in a frenzy for a good story.
I was crabbing in my kayak at Moana early in the week and two small bronzies were sniffing around my nets. First time I've seen any but I still managed to bag a dozen huge fat sandies and a rare bluey in about an hour. Cheers.

there's a hella regular shark over at port macdonnell, a short-tail/smooth stingray. crusty old battle-scarred beast... one of the many hoovers we have in ports over here, gotta be 2.5m across. amazing to see the sea floor shift under the port mac jetty in the evening, in 6 feet of water, and realise it is the goonie.
