This would be a good subject for swellnet to write an article on or very least share on FB update.

Yeah its sad, I've traveled overland from Singapore to Padang, via Batam a trip that takes days and you drive for hours through awesome jungle and indo villages, then bang a line of destruction of bull dozers etc, and big bomb fires just burning most of it, then a few km further, small palm oil palms getting planted, then bigger palm oil palms, then bigger then big palm oil plantations for as far as they eye can see for what must be hundreds of Kilometres, you drive for hours and its all you see.

Super sad...

Generally speaking, apart from some past logging and coconut palms the main islands of the Mentawais is over 90% jungle with barely a track let alone roads, would be so sad to see any of it destroyed and become palm oil plantations.

The surfing world takes so much from the Mentawai's, charter boats give little back but destroy reefs with there anchors, surf resorts charge hundreds of dollars per day, while not far away locals basically live without money and live from the ocean and land with many villages not even having toilets.

IMO the surfing world owes these people and the Mentawai's to stand up for them, even if its just by spreading the word.

I don't like spreading these kind of things but if you haven't already signed it, please do.

https://www.rainforest-rescue.org/petitions/1052/respite-for-siberut-s-f...

An energy company wants to cut down rainforest to make way for 20,000 hectares of biomass plantations on Siberut, one of the most enchanting islands of Indonesia.

The project was recently put on hold after vehement protests by the indigenous people and international community – let's make sure that it is scrapped once and for all!
