Drug Aware Pro Margaret River webcast

Just about to kick off in a few minutes. Looks like our model forecast has nailed it: I'm seeing good 4-6ft sets on our Margs surfcam with E/SE winds.

https://www.swellnet.com/reports/australia/western-australia/margaret-ri...

Here's a couple of grabs from the surfcam (actually seen bigger bombs than this but wasn't quick enough to capture 'em!).

Poor decision, can't wait to see monotonous barrels with no turns...

am i the only person getting crap "live" streaming (across multiple work-sites and computers, generally on google chrome) since they went to "youtube"? 10 seconds on then 10 off not unusual

Buffering a little here (once or twice per hour, for 20-30 second at a time) but in general streaming pretty good. We're on a standard ADSL2+ line.

ASP graphics say the best size at The Box is 8-12ft.

Oh really..?

TOO THE BOX!!!!

thermalben Thursday, 10 Apr 2014 at 11:47am

Still not convinced. The Box is a great wave to watch, but it's way to short for competition. The only point of difference will be the increments of deepness within the barrel.. dunno how you'd measure it though. Other than that it's take off, pull in, get spat out and then pull off. Repeat and rinse.

One of the commentators said it perfectly before.. something along the lines of "it's an unreal three second wave". Three seconds!

Happy to be proven wrong though.

ASP needs the frame grabs of box barrells. Kellys Box shark wave is going haywire around the world.
BTW Kelly be spewing he's not in round 5.

Still trying to get my head around the concept of my tax dollars being used to make the surf at margies more crowded. Certainly dont want to see any body attacked, but if a twenty foot pointer was to leap over the top of a surfer during the final it would do wonders for the crowd factor.

Of course i would never surf there again either.....

Nah I agree completely Ben.. Margies is firing today.. big barrels and open faces to drop wallets on. Would just be good for one round. Round 5 only. just to see how it goes and to change it up. I'll be shitty if it runs all day out there.

Absolutely. Miguel's wipeout alone will make it to the mainstream media nightly news.

when its this inconsistent, they shouldn't run at the box. I can see if it were more like 6ft that it would be a good comp environment, but this is far from edge of seat stuff in head high chew & spews

15 minutes in and the highest scoring wave is a 1.83.

Wonder if they'll move back to Margs?

Yeah the wipeouts are entertaining. But if Jordy advances through to the Quarters with a combined score of 3.10, then I reckon it'll be hard to justify the decision to move.

Pupo has had a shit load of work done on those dentures, so its a WIP. But sums up the day for the braza's - tough day at the office

Though its still gabys to take - they will be back to main break.

Interesting - winds have remained offshore both north and south of Margs all day (Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin). So this sea breeze they're experiencing is a local effect.

Layday today...CW calling for 15 second intervals on Sat arvo and then 19 sec on Sunday....offshores all day

The commissioner said they are aiming for a finish Sunday morning at the box.

Takes two hours to move all the gear. Either wave it will be a Sunday finish..

Kierans on a tear if he pulls it off

With fresh and gusty SE winds forecast for Sunday (BOM have 20-30kts!), the Box will be unsurfable. And Main Break rights will be wind affected.

The two nearest weather stations to Margs (Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste) are reporting 15-25kt SE winds. I can't see how the Box will be rideable under this direction/strength - there's 650m of water between the shoreline and the Box to build up quite a bit of chop.

thermalben's picture
thermalben Sunday, 13 Apr 2014 at 8:49am

Been watching our Margs surfcam for a little while now and it seems our model hasn't picked up today's conditions very well at all (seen one set in the 4-6ft range). Not sure if it's the leading edge of the new long period swell (19 sec) that's being under-represented, or the pre-existing short range energy (11 sec), but right now it's looking pretty solid if a little inconsistent.

We do also have some difficulties in assessing our model output in WA, because the DPI's wave buoys only display filtered parameters ('swell waves' and 'sea waves'). Personally, I think it's the short period energy that's being under represented (and that the long period energy is probably still filling in under the mix), but let's wait and see how the surf looks on the webcast.

Ben ,. I have not seen wat the surf looks like but can judge from experience it would be inco & not very good at margs / box . Nobody seems to realise this swell is very wrong for the box . I wont say why but from my experience the box requires a totally different type of swell than todays prediction .

caml's picture
caml's picture
caml Sunday, 13 Apr 2014 at 12:25pm

Surely local surfers would have told keiran p / organisers of comp that there will be no chance of box becos of the wrong swell specs days ago , but of course theyre hoping for it.

mikehunt207's picture
mikehunt207's picture
mikehunt207 Monday, 14 Apr 2014 at 9:58am

There lies the problem caml, nobody listens to the local input. They got incredibly lucky on thurs with an almost wnw swell that led to being able to surf the box, the following froth that the finals would be held there was talk of the town and the web unless you knew that a sse and ssw swell would lead to zero chance of the box being surfable. The fact how they get to build a massive judging tower on the previously protected dune in front of box is a better question. All the rules for locals and protecting the hooded plover ;no dogs , keep off the dunes blah blah and then ASP can slide into town and do whatever they like , the VIP section full of shire bigwigs, politicians with their shiny passes feeding from the trough in their newest surf clothes as some kind of pay off for allowing them to do as they please. Thank fuck it is over, just another couple weeks till they remove all the infastructure from the carpark and dunes and we get our point back. Surf is pumping today .

Haven't been to Margaret's for a long time, but that scaffold on top the dune sure looked a little reckless considering the local ethos, pretty annoying for locals who abide by often over the top rules for years, then it is all thrown out the window when the 'stars' come to town. Apparently surferrs have a profound appreciation of the environment, yeh right
