@zen…its a little difficult to 'feel worse off or not'. There is still a strong economic tide working against Aus and if fact the rest of the world. But it would be fair to say that the current government has not been the answer to many of the problems from the previous Labor. There is still a serious cloud of corruption hanging over Labor with Shorty directly involved. Sure they got the previous Labor President and a federal MP but the feeling around the traps is that the bad stench of corruption is still there. Is this important ? Fundamentally it is, since policies stated do not mean anything when it comes to implementation. Sure Abbott has stuffed up a few key points but note that this government, like in many ways to the previous Labor, is cornered by the Senate. Labor is now playing Abbott style politics - fair enough. Greens have changed leaders and reaping the disillusionment out there. Excuse the cliches but a week is a long time in politics. But if you look around you, most of us seem to be better off. More spare cash to chase those waves, I suggest.

From an outsiders perspective Tony, we've got a pretty good system of government, not perfect but better than many countries. Wherever politicians gather, there will always be the stink of curruption and on both sides. Both sides take the piss, really just depends upon which MSM newsite reports on whom and what day. I think the big danger is this American popularist style that both seem to be adopting, there's no vision from either- just pot shots over the bow and the one that scores the most hits wins regardless of the damage to the ship. I think Australian politicians overstate just how important we are in the world. If it wasn't for poisonous animals, we'd barely rate a mention.

I suppose my political views in some way have been shaped by the Unions. Early in my working life I had to have a couple of compulsory (or so I thought) union memberships and it sure as hell didn't benefit me, quite the opposite really. Striking out on my own was the best thing I ever did and I'm no silver spooner. I'm a shit kicker who's been working ever since I was 14, I know the value of a hard days work.

Say g'day to Nicki Buckley for me:)

Ever noticed how whenever you listen to parliament, both house of reps and to a lesser extent the senate, the Labor and greens pollies sound like decent well informed people trying their hardest to help the average punter whilst the Liberal and National party tea party morons carry on like spoiled little private school boys saying na na na na na where in power and you're not and pointing, gloating and laughing at the well meaning opposition members. The only thing the conservatives care about is to make sure the born to privilege ruling class elite stay at the top of the food chain where they rightly belong. They hate our guts. Cheers.

@ zen asks are you worse off under the current government as a means of rating it. Good question.
Personally, I haven't been better off given rocketing property prices and a life spent working crazy hours.

But as I'm naive and love the seemingly outdated notion of Australia as a country of the fair go and mateship I would also ask is my neighbour worse off ? and what are the lost opportunities for the country given what I see as the total ineptitude and inability of the current government to look forward?

No matter what political party you favour they are all reasonable questions

Agreed BB, I was using a very broad brush. But I suppose that brings me back to my earlier post, both governments can't see beyond the next election let alone take an inter-generational approach to Australias future.

Floydo, maybe you're working longer and harder because you like most people (including me) want a decent pad in a good spot, want a reliable ride, would like to take the lady out for a nice dinner or a holiday without having to worry about eating cup-noodles the next day and hopefully put a bit away for retirement. let's get this debate down to the level we've been accustomed to, since, well, Dec 2009 (there's a correlation there somewheres):

Does this Government pass the sniff test (as Hockey puts it)?

Well, I'm sure Bronny smelt quite nice, like Tweed, up to a point...then the faint whiff of Aeronautic fuel - or was that kero?? - became overwhelming.

Hockey has the fragrance of tobacco and crisp new dollar bills... with just a hint of I-don't-know-what-the-fuck-I'm-doing nervous sweat.

Dutton, the smell of correctional facilities. Abetz, death. Brandis, leather-bound volumes and Regaine.

Julie Bishop smells of asbestos and vinegar. Morrison, gold, frankincense and blood.

Barnaby, horse shit. Hunt, coal seam gas (I think that's what it is). Kevin Andrews, the tomb of the unknown Christian-soldier.

Hmmm, as for Tones? Testosterone and desperation and GOD!

I bet Pyne smells fabulous.

and Malcolm? Like the inside of a bank vault.

Maybe I should just go with the pub test??

Hands up who'd like to sink a beer with any of these people?

interesting you raise university degrees olddog, talking to some germans in a surf camp today and tbey cannot believe we went from having free uni degrees to paying for them. I asked does your government ever debate how to pay for degrees? most said never, not an issue for debate, they said one government introduced a nominal fee and even that got thrown out through relentless protesting. how do the germans get shit so right? I I know they're masters of engineering, but our economy must be similar with all our resource wealth.

I gotta agree old dog liberals seem like miserable people in that farce that is question time. when are they gonna change that shit? seems like an incredible waste of resources, especially when they ask their own side staged questions. . self indulgent crap!!

I'll have a beer with turnball, interesting man who holds himself well I reckon no matter the situation. and I'll have a beer with bronwyn....just so I can spit it in her face.

excellent assessment of our parliament zen...degraded to pop shots over the bow...meanwhile the ship is sinking...and no one really seems to care as long as they win the media game for the day. and I don't think we can blame the 24 hour media cycle, like everyone does.. USA has a progressive government and seems to be ricking along fine. UK has a conservative government and also seems to be ticking along fine (given current world conditions) it's just Australia that seems to enjoying a particularly bad period in politics, you wouldn't mind if it was a year or two, but we seem to be heading for 10 years of dysfunction.

Are we saying its tough to get a trade or degree and making a fair living ? If not a good one ? I would guess that most of us have a few boards, go for overseas travel chasing waves pretty regular. It might a good idea to have a look at some of our similar credential persons in say NZ or US or UK and see how they are travelling. There is a construction boom around those parts, so the blokes are pretty busy. And they are making a few bucks. The social divide is not that evident.

I have a theory: How can you pick the true, blue ribbon liberal voters on a busy freeway? Easy, they are the ones driving the brand new BMs and Mercs who refuse to budge from the fast lane even though doing 30ks under the limit with their noses in the air completely oblivious to the mayhem and carnage behind as 500 cars jostle and tailgate trying to get around them. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying they are all greedy self righteous bastards, it's just the 99% who make the rest look bad. Only ragging actually my cousin was a Liberal minister in the Howard Govt. He was such a down to earth top bloke that even the Labor mob respected him, in fact he was so nice most people just assumed he must have been a Labor politician.

Apparently Abbott's nuts rest on the Canning byelection and before then we have the continuing train wrecks of the now thoroughly tainted Royal Commission and the governments inability to bury the same sex debate as they would like. Personally, I want Abbott to lead the government to the next election to allow him to completely soil the nest. If Turnbull gets the gig it will be a party divided given the 70 so far right conservatives in the parliamentary party that currently are in lock-step with Toxic Tony.

We are 1/2 through the 4th week straight where the daily media is full of stories of how fucking hopeless the Abbott government is.

This week's cabinet meeting didn't have an agenda and next week's has been cancelled. Why? the neocons have nothing to say or do, furiously idling on the spot doing nothing while the country is screaming out for leadership.

You suckers that voted for this pathetic, miserable and imbecilic bunch of knuckleheads driven by far right wing motherhood statements must be wondering WTF you were thinking. Or maybe you weren't thinking.

This week its those evil greenies declaring war on coal mining. BULLSHIT. If this change to the law goes ahead its going to impact most on the LOCK THE GATE farmers and green groups in NSW and QLD. They can't get coal mines up (lets face it who will finance them these days anyway?) so coal seam gas will be Abbott's new war on anything .... SHITHEAD.
