Whatever China has done , it HAS secured it's Energy Needs during their Transition to Renewables .

I find Dutton pushing the Nuclear thing weird and just dumb politics.
It's just not going to win any new voters and more likely to just put many people off, because no matter how good or reliable Nuclear is nobody will want a plant near them because people in Australia have been brainwashed to fear Nuclear and even fear the tiny amount of waste that can easily be stored safely.
Plus the economics on Nuclear just don't stack up unless heavily subsidised by the government, so even if it made or makes sense as part of a smart solution to reducing green house emissions it's kind of pointless to explore.
Instead we will just continue to rely on a 100% renewables dream which in reality is going to most likely be renewables backed up by a large number of gas peaking plants (Aust already has over 50) expert's say gas peaking plants will support renewables until at least 2050. (As mentioned in the ABC podcast last or second last episode of Australia if your listening)

How much will 1 kWh cost me when we move to the so called 100% renewable future? That’s all I need to know but it’s so hard to find an answer to that. All this ‘research’ is just muddying the waters.

Three small modular reactors (SMRs) were operational in 2022, located in Russia, China, and India. Three more were under construction, while 65 SMRs were still in the design stage. Most of them had a capacity of between 100 and 300 megawatts.
What are SMRs?
SMRs are advanced nuclear reactors with a capacity generally smaller than 300 megawatts. Their construction is expected to be both quicker and more cost-effective than other nuclear reactors. SMRs have higher spatial adaptability and are safer because of their small size and simplified design. They also need to be refueled less frequently. As such, SMR technology would have a global impact on the economy, energy security, and transition.
Current status of SMRs
In practice, the implementation of SMRs has been on hold for years. Since SMR projects are not standardized, and designing and licensing processes are country-dependent, new reactors would not be operative before 2030. The estimated capital costs for SMRs are proving to be unexpectedly high: SMRs' levelized costs of electricity (LCOE) could be over 100 U.S. dollar per megawatt hour compared to around 30 U.S. dollars for solar and wind energy.

A bit like capturing and storing carbon, although there have been some laboratory successes with that I've seen recently, they put it in rocks believe it or not. But still, only in a lab, nothing to scale to match the omissions, probably impossible to scale anything up to deal with that. Another diversion that got a good run for years, that they wanted the budget to fund, and it did for a while, that went nowhere and was never going to happen.
So you're talking about a large baseload reactors. 10 to 20 years to research, build and get online and the most expensive power option on the table by a country mile. Never going to happen, now, or ever here. No private money would be stupid enough to capitalise one, so it's the taxpayer that would fund it. Dutton could win the next election and be the longest serving LNP PM in history and they would never build even one. Would send the budget broke. He knows that, they all know that.
It's just a diversion and fluff from a party bereft of any talent or policy that are simply there to protect the interests of the 1% and grift whatever they can themselves, the only thing they are actually any good at.

Dutton pushing nuclear doesn’t make sense for the vast majority of Australians however when you need to keep the good ole boy LNP parliamentarians from QLD and the Nationals more generally happy pushing nuclear makes perfect sense (and we all know who owns the QLD LNP and Nationals).
So the climate wars continue with the QLD LNP and Nationals tail wagging the Liberal Party dog same as it always has with the LNP even further away from regaining the Teal seats and government.
I personally expected the LNP to implode after the last election given the internal divisions but I guess too many moderates lost their seats for that to happen but it could happen after the next election if they get equally savaged by the electorate, here’s hoping:)
