Gotta admit, thought they were taking the piss when they said San Francisco, thought someone was going to jump in and say, just kidding, we are really going to Summer Bay or something. Interesting though how the US has 3 events for 2011 (not including Hawaii).
Would have thought that we have better quality waves that fall higher up the ranking than than San Francisco.
What is there to 'Search' for in San Francisco? I'm assuming it'll be at Ocean Beach, which is about as remote as Bondi.
I had the same reaction as MTW. Maybe it was due to Owen's wooden delivery but I thought it was a joke and someone would step in, like, "Ha, gotcha, we're off to Diego Garcia."
I know Rip Curl has had problems securing breaks for the Search (Raglan, Gnaraloo) and copped grief for exposing others (La Jolla - Mexico) but surely there are 1000's of possibilities in countries that could do with the financial injection. I'm thinking Maldives, Madeira, Samoa, Peru, Sri Lanka. All those countries have necessary infrastructure, have already been 'exposed' to surfers, but aren't as dull - at least surfwise - as San Fran.

Am I alone in my disappointment?
Waiting for Dylan Slater in concert with Owen to announce 'the Search' to be held 'somewhere' where azure waters slam live coral, while on shore, caramel skinned beauties in grass skirts and coconut bikini's sway to the rythmn of gentle tradewinds fanning the rifling barrels a stones throw away.
What do we get? Frigid Fucking San Francisco. And a turd brown beachbreak no less.
This dream tour is turning into a flippin' nightmare.
