Your local

I'm curious about about the size of the area that everyone considers themselves a local.

I live on the sunshine coast and mainly surf the beach breaks of one of the long stretches of sand up here. I absolutely hate crowds so tend to avoid the points unless there's a cyclone when it can be worth sucking it up.

For family reasons I've had to bounce between Brisbane and the coast for different lengths of time over the last 16 or 17 years (with a stint overseas in amongst that). I think because of that and the fact I tend to stick to the beaches, I only feel like a local across about a 1km stretch of sand.

I dunno if this is interesting but I was sitting in the lineup about 3kms up the beach from where I tend to paddle out, not recognising anyone, and I started wondering about it. I was so close to where I usually surf but did not feel like I was at my local. It made me curious about how other people think/feel.

Had a thought out in the surf today. Maybe not interesting but I wondered how others think.

Interesting. There's 4 points in raglan and some excellent beach breaks and a harbor entrance too and within that there's locals for most points. Everyone seems to have their faves and not that many mix it up that much. Then again when the beachies are on most end up at the same places. Pretty tame these days compared to years ago but still some verbal on occasions and a bit of ribbing if you turn up on a different point to normal

I live in the center of a SW facing 250km stretch of coast where I know what works where and when, and I know enough people along it so that I can be respectful and say hi.. coupla spots susceptible to onshores 10 mins from my house, my proper locals I guess, where I might remind tourists about stuff like camping, rubbish, drones and manners if needed, which is very seldom.. all are welcome.

In WA our numberplates are the letters of the town we're based in. So pretty much anywhere in that zone you can't help but feel a part of that area and you always check crews numberplates to see where they're from.

My theory is, in the interest of maximising good waves,
Is that I’m a local everywhere , and nowhere.
In that I appreciate every location I go to .
Without pretending I own it.
