Russia itself would love to take USD as a payment. Russian ruble keeps collapsing, nearly 300% down over the last decade or so. Sanctions are a cherry on top of the cake. Killed it. Imagine issuing a futures contract to sell some goods in advance in ruble. And then months later that ruble is worth a lot less than initially anticipated. This is very common with commodities which Russia obviously sells. By now, citizens would be buying USD and EUR in droves, trying to shield against a falling currency. I would also suspect that there is a thriving currency black market in Russia.

This is a real smart move by Trump, both politically and practically.
He has now set a deadline date, you always set a deadline date when you want something done, and he also made it clear there is consequences if the hostages are not released if that date is not met.
However, you have to follow through with the threat if the deadline is not met, with Biden they would go yeah right whatever, but Trump is much more unpredictable and likely to follow through, so more likely to get results.
It's smart politically because if the hostages are somehow released before Trump gets in it's a win for Trump, he can claim it was because of him not Biden, and lets be real if it happens it will be because of the fear of Trump, nothing to do with Biden, if it was it would have happened under Biden long ago.
Id expect though this is a really a threat to Iran rather than Hamas, you have to go after the puppet master not just the puppet, you put the pressure on them, who then puts pressure on Hamas.
The consequences can come in all manner of forms for Iran from sanctions etc to supporting Israel in what is needed to take out underground nuclear sites.
You start small and increase pressure through a number of steps, sanctions, extra help for Israel to hit more military sites, then help with what is needed to hit underground nuclear sites, if still no results you have to make them suffer economically hitting oil sites etc, problem is you dont want to affect USA oil prices and shoot yourself in the foot, and you also dont want Iran people to support their government, so you need to be careful and smart.
But just the idea that the USA now are so much more supportive of Israel changes the whole game, before USA being so wishy washy and even holding Israel back with threats like they cant go into Raffa or restriction's on bombs etc was actually encouraging and rewarding Iran & it's proxies to stretch things out as long as they can, especially when they were happily seeing friction between both leaders, it was so counter productive.
