Firstly, Geert Wilders isn't the leader of the Netherlands.
Secondly, and it's a little more complex, our current Federal govt inherited migration numbers largely through overseas student and temporary work visas lodged prior to COVID. Break down the 737,000 and you'll see those two categories making up most of the pie.
The numbers means very little on their own. How many are counted in permanent migration is where it crosses over into something more meaningful.
OS students and temporary work visas are largely at the behest of the university sector and the Business Council, and both are having the squeeze put on them. Following a 2022 review into migration, the Albanese govt has capped OS students from next year and many unis are currently cutting staff, cutting courses, and cutting domestic student numbers (OS students underwrite much of local students costs).
The same 2022 review also suggested capping temporary work visas though that hasn't been acted on yet, and whenever the issue is broached the BCA and its media lackeys push back against the Albanese govt. 'Who'll do the work?'
Curiously those same media lackeys also attack the govt about its migration. Talk about having it both ways.
