Best coffin board bag for OS travel

Looking at heading OS for the first time since covid later in the year and I’m thinking about a new coffin board bag. Want one that is quality and will stand the test of time and if so I don’t mind paying a bit extra. I’ve had FCS and Creatures coffin bags previously but don’t think the quality of either was quite up to scratch. Also if possible I’d like to fit a 7’4 Joel Fitz twinny in there, so was thinking of going 7’6 on length.

Anyone got any recommendations? I was thinking the Ocean and Earth 7’6 quad coffin with wheels.
Cheers

Got the Ocean and Earth coffin, and its been great. Few Indo trips and around Australia on a roof and still good.

Took an old coffin OS a few months back - family trip to Europe - of which the bag looked like it had one last trip left in it.

I was right - it had only one trip left - from my house to the airport, where two straps snapped off before we checked in. Pretty much everything else (except the zips, thankfully) fell apart at some point thereafter. Didn't help that it was a foot and a half bigger than my biggest board, so the end of the bag was jammed with clothes, shoes, whatever to get it up to 23kg (highly recommend NOT doing this, it distributes the weight unevenly and makes it a prick to carry).

So, I'm in the market too! Keen for one with wheels too, though it looks like there are two variations - either on the flat, or on the rail. I suspect the rail version (O+E, I think) will be easier to handle?

None of my board bags have ever really disappointed me, but some have been a real pain to cart around. My Needs Essential bag feels nowhere near as padded as my 10+ year old Ocean and Earth, but both have kept boards safe.

That said, if money was no object I would definitely get the O&E with wheels. $530 bucks but there's been times I would have paid someone $100 on the spot for some wheels on my board bag I reckon haha.

One I have is the 7'6.
It's still going strong and has had a lot of use. Zippers all good.
Wheels can add extra weight, so went without when choosing. Slides ok.

I have the 7’6 O & E quad cover no wheels. Good quality bag and fairly waterproof . I didn’t get wheels as they are extra weight and are prone to being damaged by airlines . You could check market place on Facebook, some real bargains to be had .

Thing is, I reckon I need a couple of bags. It's a pain taking a coffin with only 2 or 3 boards, and sometimes I just don't need many boards at all. But coffins are great for packing in a couple of wetties and extra stuff.

What I want is a durable single for short trips where I only need one board, a slim but heavily padded double, and then a coffin for extended trips (or family trips where I'm packing in the kids boards too).

But, that's over a thousand bucks in surfboard bags.

Don't get one that has the wheels on the rails, so hard to carry as you need to lift it to high to carry comfortably. Get one that you carry with the boards being flat.

Thanks for the info all, decided to grab one of the 7’6 ocean and earth wheel coffins while they were in stock. Seems like there is a real shortage of coffins in the 7ft + range at the moment.

Never had a coffin with wheels, so fingers crossed they are tough enough for dodgy airlines and baggage handlers worldwide haha

I’ve never had one with wheels - travelled with a mate that did and it looked like a pain in the arse as the bag was quite a bit longer than the boards.

I’ve always found that taking the time to pack it so it’s properly balanced makes a massive difference, even if you’re packing extra stuff in the bag. Not sure if I’d bother with a wheeled one.

I’d be going for the lightest one you can get so as to not attract extra weight charges. What’s the lightest on the market? Rip curl used to make epic lightweight ones.

I’d avoid one with wheels and look for one with a skid plate/s instead. I bought a Farking one last year as most other brands where hard to get. Good bag.easy to drag on airport floors and even foot paths. Had 4 boards in it. Wheels add a lot of weight.

Never had one with wheels but I've wished I had after rocking up to Desk A and finding out check in is an alphabet away.

Looks like the wheels adds 1.8kg.

2.4 kg between wheels and no wheels on 7’6 O & E , not a huge difference . I had 3 boards 4 legropes and 5 x fin sets and 3 booties , weight was 23 kg exactly which was virgins max before they start charging, not sure what extra kgs rate was . Some domestic flights in Indonesia are charging 200,000rp per board .

Hey guys
BRAVOsurf has stock. Quiksilver covers are made alongside the best in the biz. Quality is guaranteed and we have availability. We are generally $50-$100 lower price than others in the market.

Side note - yes Virgin are strict on the 23kg leaving Oz. So with 5x boards I usually 'check in' a double and a Wheely in Oz. Likely 17kg for Wheely with 3 boards and 9 for double with 2. Pay for the double if need be. When returning (usually thru Indo) they do not check (I assume their airport staff have fewer union/lifting restrictions) - so just chuck it all in the Wheely for 28kg (yes the Quik Wheely fits 5 boards, with a double cover inside).. works a treat..

Reach out to us at BRAVOsurf with any queries..

High end travel. The bag is more expensive than most boards.

Chris any chance of getting the 3-4 board 7ft3 bag without wheels back in stock?

don't really think I need the rollers and the weight saving is a bonus

Legend thanks - will keep an eye out.

Be very interested in hearing from others whether wheels are worth it or not, for 2-3kg additional weight. I've never had much of an issue carrying 3 boards but am wondering if the wheels actually protect the tail end of the board bag better?

I have an FCS coffin bag holds four boards up to 7'. It's been unreal, had it for years and still going strong. It's got the plastic slidy thing at the tail but if I bought again, I'd go wheels.
