Recap

Poor conditions in the South West with a mix of swells to 6-8ft, while Perth saw an early window of OK conditions and 2-3ft of swell, deteriorating quickly through the morning.

Today conditions are still cumby in the South West with a weaker onshore wind and drop in swell back to 2ft+ while Mandurah and Perth are cleaner with peaky, lumpy 2-3ft sets. Winds should go more variable in the South West through the morning, creating improving conditions but tomorrow looks much better.

Lumpy, improving surf in the South West

This week and next (Aug 10 - 18)

While the swell looks a little less impressive across the South West today, some reinforcing energy this afternoon should help maintain surf to 6ft on the magnets tomorrow as winds go proper offshore and create clean conditions.

Mandurah should be 2ft+ with 2ft sets in Perth and a light E-E/NE offshore wind is due, only tending NE through the afternoon in the South West and S/SE-SE to the north. This will create a full day of fun surf.

Friday will be clean again with an E/SE-SE offshore, tending S'ly through the day along with a small bump in new mid-period SW swell.

This is being generated by a weak, patchy fetch of strong W/SW winds to our south-west and isn't expected to offer too much size wise, with 4-5ft+ sets across the South West and small 1-2ft waves to the north.

Come the weekend some slightly stronger, mid-period S/SW energy is due to fill in, generated by a better fetch of strong to gale-force W/SW winds firing up in our southern swell window.

The swell should arrive Saturday morning and peak through the day to 6ft+ across the South West (odd 8ft cleanup magnets), 2ft in Mandurah and 1-2ft across Perth, holding a similar size Sunday morning.

E/NE tending variable winds will create great conditions on Saturday with variable offshore winds Sunday morning ahead of a freshening W/NW breeze into the afternoon.

With this run of favourable conditions and fun sized surf, it's definitely worth focussing on in the South West.

Our larger SW groundswell for early/mid next week is on track, generated by a strong, persistent polar frontal progression swinging in from under South Africa today, traversing across the Heard Island region and then weakening while approaching our south-west.

The longevity is great and winds look to be mostly in the gale-force range, producing a large SW groundswell that should build Tuesday, peak into the late afternoon and ease Wednesday. 10ft+ surf is due in the South West, 2-3ft Mandurah and 2ft+ across Perth at the peak.

At this stage winds look poor Monday and Tuesday with strong W/SW winds Monday, weaker Tuesday and light offshore to the north.

Wednesday could see winds improve and tend S'ly across the South West as a trough clips the state, offshore to the north but we'll review this Friday.

Longer term a large, reinforcing SW groundswell may be seen later week but we'll review this Friday.
