Recap
Friday afternoon’s kick in more consistent S/SW groundswell energy started to ease through the weekend, with clean fun 3-5ft waves in the South West but tiny in Perth and Mandurah.
Yesterday was smaller and only for the keen across the South West magnets.
Today we’ve got a deterioration in the local winds along with a building W/SW groundswell that should show more convincingly into the afternoon.
This week and weekend (Apr 4 - 9)
This afternoon’s W/SW groundswell is due to peak to an inconsistent 4-6ft across the South West magnets, 2ft on the sets in Mandurah and 1-2ft across Perth but with S/SW-SW breezes, easing slowly through tomorrow from 4-5ft, 1-2ft and 1-1.5ft respectively.
Winds will remain less than ideal with the best conditions being found in protected spots. Light S/SE-SE winds are due across most locations ahead of afternoon sea breezes. Try the South West if you’re desperate.
The middle of the week is poor as the swell continues to fade along with S/SE-S/SW winds, improving Friday morning and swinging to the E/SE in the South West (SE to the north) along with a new pulse of mid-period SW swell. This is being generated by a low that’s now weakening north of the Heard Island region, with it generating a fetch of strong to gale-force W/SW winds over the weekend, to the south-southeast of Madagascar.
The swell will be inconsistent but we should see it filling in Friday, offering 4-5ft+ sets in the South West, and an inconsistent 1ft to occasionally 2ft in Perth and Mandurah.
The swell will ease Saturday, further Sunday morning with morning offshore winds.
Apart from a couple of small SW groundswells into Sunday afternoon and Tuesday, we’ve got a more active outlook of Southern Ocean frontal activity developing into the middle of next week.
A mix of mid-period swell and groundswell in the large size range is due to develop later Tuesday but more so through Wednesday/Thursday but with onshore winds. More on this in Wednesday and Friday’s updates.
