Recap

A kick in new S/SW swell through yesterday but with average winds across the South West, OK in protected spots around Mandurah and Perth.

This morning was much cleaner with the swell coming in at 4-5ft around Margs, while Mandurah and Perth were more in the tiny size range.

Today’s Forecaster Notes are brought to you by Rip Curl

This week and weekend (Feb 15 - 18)

This afternoon a reinforcing S/SW groundswell should provide sets more to 4-6ft across south swell magnets in the South West, dropping back from the 4-5ft range again tomorrow morning with tiny waves to the north.

Winds will be favourable and offshore SE, possibly tending E/SE through at times before sea breezes kick in. Friday looks to offer similar winds, though the swell will be smaller and dropping back from 3ft+.

A low point in swell is due through Saturday with fresher SE winds across the state, but later in the day, a new inconsistent SW groundswell is due, peaking Sunday.

This swell was generated in our far swell window, south of South Africa by a strong polar low. The low has since weakened, resulting in a very inconsistent long-range swell, peaking Sunday morning to 3-5ft across the South West.

Conditions are looking really good though with a light to moderate E/SE offshore wind ahead of sea breezes.

Into early next week we'll see the swell continue to ease from Sunday with S/SE winds, but a new small W/SW swell is due through Tuesday, peaking into the afternoon.

This will be produced by a weak but persistent and small mid-latitude storm forming south-east of Madagascar later this week and traversing the Indian Ocean over the weekend, strengthening while dipping south-east through our swell window Sunday evening.

The swell will only be small but should provide 1-1.5ft sets around Perth and Mandurah Tuesday afternoon with 3-4ft+ sets around Margs. Unfortunately sea breezes will be in at the peak of the swell, with cleaner smaller waves Wednesday morning.

More on this Friday.

Craig, is the possibility of a TC developing in the states NW likely to result in any swell for the west coast?

Unfortunately no. If it does form it's forecast to travel inland.

Are you still calling it looking really good for Sun morning in the SW?

Yeah conditions should be great, swell inconsistent but fun at magnets and long-period.
