Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 26th January)

Best Days: Sunday morning, Monday morning and Tuesday South West magnets

Recap

Plenty of swell left across the South West yesterday morning to 5-6ft, though S/SE winds only favoured protected spots. Further north the swell was clean but tiny.

This morning the swell has eased further and early S/SE winds have created OK conditions across all locations, workable in the South West.

This weekend and next week (Jan 27 - Feb 2)

Tomorrow looks to be mostly a lay day with morning onshore winds and small surf, though a S/SE change later in the day across the South West and building SW swell may provided some options, though the strength of the swell isn't great.

This mid-period SW swell has been generated by a relatively weak but slow moving polar frontal progression projecting slowly towards us the last day or so.

The front is currently south-west of us, and we should see a late increase in SW swell tomorrow, with some better size Sunday as the swell swings more S/SW.

The peak now looks to be into Sunday afternoon, with the morning coming in at 4-5ft, with the odd bigger set across magnets into the afternoon in the South West. Mandurah and Perth will remain tiny, likely coming in at 1-1.5ft and 1ft respectively.

Winds look favourable and offshore from the SE during Sunday morning, tending S/SE into the afternoon.

As touched on last update, conditions will be great for swell magnets as the swell eases into early next week with gusty E/SE offshores Monday morning straighter from the E Tuesday morning.

The swell will ease from 3-5ft or so across the South West magnets Monday morning, and 3ft+ Tuesday morning, small to tiny Wednesday but clean again. Further north the surf will be tiny.

The offshore winds will be generated by a slow moving and large blocking high moving into the Bight, and this along with another high across the Indian ocean will deflect any major storms away from our main swell windows.

With this the surf is expected to bottom out mid-late week and next weekend, with no new swell due until the week starting the 5th of February. Therefore make the most of Sunday through Tuesday's waves. Have a great weekend!
