Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 24th January)

Best Days: Protected spots in the South West tomorrow morning and later Saturday, Sunday morning across the South West, magnets Monday and Tuesday mornings

Recap

Building levels of swell yesterday though with cross-shore S/SE winds favouring protected spots in the South West. Further north Mandurah saw small fun 1-2ft waves, 1-1.5ft in Perth.

This morning similar sized waves were seen with cleaner conditions across the South West with a SE breeze. We should see a peak in SW groundswell this afternoon though with sea breezes.

Today’s Forecaster Notes are brought to you by Rip Curl.

This week and weekend (Jan 25 - 28)

This afternoon's peak in SW groundswell will be followed by a downwards trend through Thursday and Friday as winds deteriorate with a slow moving frontal system approaching from the south-west.

We'll see a morning S/SE breeze tending S/SW tomorrow with easing 4-5ft+ sets across the South West, cleaner to the north but tiny.

Friday then looks average with an onshore SW tending W/SW breeze and smaller swell across the South West. Perth and Mandurah will be cleaner but tiny.

We're still expected to see our new SW swell building over the weekend, generated by a slow moving but relatively weak polar turning mid-latitude frontal system.

Various fetches of strong W/SW tending SW winds should generate a fun sized SW swell, building Saturday though with strengthening S/SW tending S/SE winds, peaking Sunday morning to 4-5ft+ across Margs, 1-1.5ft in Mandurah and 1ft in Perth.

The late swing in winds Saturday will open up a couple of options in protected spots across the South West but Sunday morning should see fresh SE winds, creating fun waves across selected spots in the South West.

Moving into next week we're due to see the swell easing as wind swing more offshore from the E/SE Monday and E Tuesday favouring magnets in the South West.

Longer term there's nothing major due at all next week, so you'll be best of making the most of Monday and Tuesday's conditions.

It doesn't look like we'll be seeing a tropical cyclone forming off our north-west, not that this was going to generate any decent swell in any case.
