Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 15th December)

Best Days: South West swell magnets tomorrow morning, protected spots Monday morning for keen surfers, Mandurah and Perth Tuesday morning

Recap

A kick in swell but less than ideal conditions early across the South West, a little better mid-morning with variable winds before sea breezes kicked in. Mandurah offered fun clean 2ft sets, with 1-1.5ft waves around Perth.

This morning the swell has dropped back to 3-4ft across the South West with workable S/SE winds, while Mandurah was hanging in at 2ft, tiny to the north.

This weekend and next week (Dec 16 - 22)

The swell will reach a low point tomorrow morning but conditions will be great across swell magnets in the South West with a straight light E'ly wind. Expect leftover 3ft sets, tiny and clean around Mandurah and Perth.

Onshore winds will kick in around late morning owing to strong cold front projecting up towards us and developing into a severe cut-off low. The front will be carrying a deep pool of cold air, bringing a wintery blast to the South West.

We'll also see an oversized stormy swell developing as a tight fetch of severe-gale to storm-force winds are projected right into our west coast.

The swell will build rapidly through Sunday out of the SW and likely reach 12ft+ by dark though with strong to gale-force W'ly winds.

Perth and Mandurah should build to stormy 3-4ft later in the day, peaking Monday morning to 4-5ft.

The South West should start to ease from the 10-12ft range, though strong SW winds will only leave super protected locations with workable waves.

Unfortunately once the low starts weakening and moving south-east towards the Bight, winds will linger onshore from the S/SW (though Perth and Mandurah may see an early S/SE breeze Tuesday morning with easing 2-3ft sets.

Wednesday will be much cleaner with an E'ly offshore but no size at all left across any coast.

Longer term a large blocking high will keep our coast quiet into the end of the week and next weekend unfortunately. More on this Monday, have a great weekend!
