Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 2nd October)

Best Days: Tuesday morning, Wednesday, Thursday, dawn Friday in the South West, Monday next week

Recap

Great waves over the weekend with a strong new S/SW groundswell across the South West under offshore winds, coming in at 4-6ft. Mandurah saw fun 2ft sets, tiny and around 1-1.5ft to the north.

The swell held well into Sunday across the South West with even better conditions persisting all day, while Mandurah dropped back to 1-2ft, with 1-1.5ft waves around Perth.

Today early variable winds created OK conditions across Margs, with a bit less swell, while Mandurah offered clean 1-2ft waves, with tiny surf around Perth.

This week and weekend (Oct 3 - 8)

The SW swell seen today, spreading off the fetch of broad W/NW gales over the weekend, should persist into tomorrow with a good reinforcing pulse of longer-period swell for the morning followed by some mid-period W/SW energy through the afternoon.

Margs should see 4-6ft sets tomorrow morning out of the SW, with the W/SW energy also reaching 6ft into the afternoon, while Mandurah looks to be around 2ft, pulsing a little further into the afternoon with inconsistent 2ft sets around Perth.

Winds will improve and swing SE but be fresh tomorrow, while as the swell eases into Wednesday better E/SE breezes are expected.

Thursday will see even straighter E'ly winds persisting most of the day as the swell bottoms out (stick to Margs).

Later Thursday and more so Friday, some new small SW groundswell is due off a weak and small fetch of pre-frontal W/NW winds through our swell window tomorrow evening, less favourably aligned into Wednesday.

A small lift in size to 3-4ft is due across Margs Friday, tiny to the north with a dawn E/NE breeze, tending onshore during the morning with an approaching frontal system. Therefore aim for the dawny.

As touched on last week, this polar frontal progression should generate some good new groundswell for the weekend but with initially with onshore winds as it pushes into us.

A large SW groundswell is due Saturday from the front projecting a fetch of SW gales nicely up towards us through the second half of this week, coming in at 8ft across the South West, peaking through the afternoon. The morning will consistent of lower-period swell along with onshore W/SW winds. Perth and Mandurah should build to 3ft with similar onshore winds.

A secondary vigorous front should then project up on a similar path, before moving more through our southern swell window, generating a larger S/SW groundswell for Sunday.

This should see surf to the 10ft range across the South West and 3ft+ further north as winds remain onshore form the SW tending S/SW.

A ridge of high pressure should move in quickly overnight though, resulting in offshore winds and pumping surf into Monday as the S/SW groundswell eases. Beyond this some weaker swell is due into next week, but more on this Wednesday.
