Fun surf across the South West
Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 25th August)
Best Days: Margs most days over the coming period besides Tuesday
Recap
Super fun waves across the South West the last two days, with clean 4ft of surf yesterday, remaining good all day, while today a bit more energy was seen with a new SW groundswell. Perth and Mandurah were best yesterday, tiny today.
This weekend and next week (Aug 26 – Sep 1)
Today's SW groundswell was generated by a pre-frontal fetch of W/NW gales through our swell window, but we'll see a better S/SW groundswell tomorrow across the South West, generated by stronger trailing W/SW gale to severe-gale winds.
A peak is due through the morning with sets to 6ft due across swell magnets, and 1-1.5ft waves further north (Perth and Mandurah).
From here the swell will ease, dropping into Sunday from 3-5ft around Margs and 1ft to the north.
Winds over the weekend look great with offshore SE tending E/SE breezes tomorrow morning, SE back into the late afternoon, and then E/NE tending variable winds Sunday.
The surf will continue to ease into Monday, bottoming out Tuesday with morning offshores and S/SE breezes into the afternoons.
Our next swell will arrive through Wednesday and that will be a very inconsistent long-range number, mixed in with some more consistent mid-period swell.
The long-range energy has been created by a vigorous storm firing up towards South Africa, in our far swell window. This storm will weaken before reaching a line drawn south from Madagascar and with this we'll see a lot of swell decay.
A very inconsistent long-period W/SW groundswell will be generated, with the forerunners arriving Tuesday but with no size, ahead of the groundswell proper Wednesday.
Also in the mix will be some mid-period SW swell from the remnants of the storm, passing through the Heard Island region over the coming days.
The mid-period energy will be most noticeable on Wednesday morning with inconsistent 3-4ft sets, while the groundswell should reach an infrequent 6ft into the afternoon.
Perth and Mandurah are due to remain tiny Wednesday morning, with 1-1.5ft sets through the afternoon. Winds will be offshore through the morning, with sea breezes into the afternoon.
Longer term we're looking at a bit of swell next weekend but with onshore winds, more on this Monday. Have a great weekend!
