Watch: The Ugly Duckling
A second take at Torren Martyn's sailing trip on the good ship Calytpte.
The first film, also called Calypte, documented the whole journey from learning to sail on Lake Ainsworth to avoiding nightmare scenarios in the seas off Sumatra, and plenty of surfing of course.
In contrast, The Ugly Duckling hones in on one small detail of the trip: the odd shaped board Torren lugs onto the boat. If all surfboards are essentially the same to you then The Ugly Duckling might not be your film - look at the pretty waves instead.
For everyone else, particularly those whose own surfing evolves through various designs, the film is inspiration to stay the course; keep on seeking those new feelings.
When, early in the film, Torren claims that all Simon Jones' boards have a common template, it's easy to think the big fella has spent too long at sea. Simon's sleek pintails - such as his Fiji model - appear to have no common ground with the stubby Ugly Duckling - which Simon admits finding so ugly it's hard to look at.
Yet remarkably, they're born from the same template.
It's not unlike the development of Ben Aipa's Da Sting in the early-70s. Aipa liked the planshape of his mini-guns but they were too long for hot-dogging in Hawaii's South Shore waves. His solution was to ostensibly cut out a foot or so from the rear third of the board and rejoin the planshape, though now with a step on the bottom and a sharp flyer on the sides - a six foot board with a seven foot planshape.
Fifty years later Simon Jones has done something similar yet removed both nose and tail. So there's a method to his madness, though it's only a stepping off point for new ideas. A second version of the board gets delivered to Torren, less ugly, but better performing. To my eyes it surfs more 'in' the water rather than 'on' it. The idea evolves.
I don't recall too many films devoted solely to board design - On The Edge Of A Dream by Kidman and Ericson the only one that comes to mind - yet surfers are more educated than ever about board design. The Ugly Duckling fills a void, and whether you like the design or not it hopefully gets you thinking about shapes moving through water and the feelings that arise.
As with Calypte, The Ugly Duckling is presented by needessentials. Created and directed by Kelly Foote.

Great video the film quality is just amazing it's like crisper than real life and the waves perfect. (Banyak's & Telos)
I think he look's better on the round nose design, look's more twitchy on the no nose thing, but lets be real the dude could rip on anything.
BTW. I think that Chris Ward surf video 5' 5" x 19 1/4" was all about one board but not same type of movie as this.
Edit: nah just looked at the ending credits, it wasnt just about one board, each section was a different board in the 5 foot something range, the tittle was a little misleading.
I’m with you Indo, nothing worse than a misleading tittle, but that’s the nature of women’s undergarments these days.
Great vid, the round nose went so much better than that other thing but as Indo said- Torren could ride anything so I don't think Simon is gonna have the phone ringing off the hook with orders.
That nose looks like a recipe for disaster.
Looking forward to watching; bound to be excellent.
Jeff Alexander is lovin' it
Wow - J.A. Patented the Gemini 30 yrs Ago .
There’s merit in thinking more about the front end of a board rather than just the rest……
Ive been mucking about on longboards a bit lately and after seeing that video wondered if taking the V shaped entry underneath the nose a fair bit deeper / longer under the board leading into a slight concave as well as hardening the rail edge at the front for a bit , would a long board engage the rail into the wave quicker on a steep wave.
The idea seems more suited to longer boards rather than short to me anyway.
Good fun thinking about these things.
lost 5'5 19 1/4
Yeah see my post above, i thought all the surfing was all on one board design or even size, but the video is on Youtube and in the credit's it says each part was filmed on a different board (all in the 5 foot something range)
good flyer @Stu.. I notice through the last weeks of WOTD you've either gotten into a very early rise routine, or finally automated your morning burden..?
Ha ha...you're onto it.
Back in the day - before Insta came along - we had a big roster of photographers and also more places to feature them (Swellnet Sessions) so I'd always wait till morning to post the WOTD, taking the pick of the shots sent overnight. That way I could keep it topical and relevant.
Social media changed all that, however I got into the habit of thinking up captions first thing in the morning and found it was a good way to get the creativity flowing for the day to come.
However, between morning sessions, getting kids ready and whatever else, that doesn't work as well as it used to so lately I've been programming them the night before.
Not quite as much fun, but it's a little less stressful.
pragmatism, necessary.. esp when your kids are the dominant force and you can feel your familiar (!) superpowers starting to naturally wane.. cheers for the glimpse behind the green door - the wotd greeting each morning means a lot to us.
Amazing surfer.
Yep Jeff Alexander and Ryan Burch.
Met Jeff many years ago in Sumatra and he was on a similar design then, and also wearing a helmet with drinking straws embedded, an entertaining chap indeed.
One of my favourite videos is an older Ryan Burch one where he takes 4 or 5 boards, similar in concept to the original ugly duckling, to G Land. Surf's them from 3 - 10'. I think it was the same idea of a longer board outline for a shorter board.
Rush of Continuous Rythm - Fantastic Vid
Guy could/ can surf an ironing board....
Love those Needs videos...
Yep udo, a well made vid with Ryan ripping,it's a favourite of mine.
