Small window of clean conditions early Friday, onshore weekend
Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 5th October)
Best Days: Early Friday, Monday morning Perth, Tuesday South West, Wednesday morning South West
Recap
Poor conditions across the South West, while Mandurah and Perth saw light winds early with 2ft sets.
Today was similar, but with a touch more strength in the wind around Mandurah, while Margs saw larger sets after a late kick in swell yesterday but with NW winds.
This week and weekend (Oct 6 - 9)
Onshore winds from the NW are due across Perth most of the day tomorrow with a new mid-period W/SW swell and the South West will see dawn NW breezes, easing and tending W/SW through the afternoon.
No major size is due off this swell, with 5-6ft sets expected around Margs, and 2ft waves in Perth, easing back Friday from 4-6ft and 3ft respectively Friday morning.
Our period of early offshore winds is still on the track across Margs, with a dawn E/NE breeze increasing from the N/NE during the morning before tending strong N/NW into the afternoon. Perth will be less favourable with a N/NE breeze from dawn.
The weekend is looking poor again with small surf Saturday under fresh and gusty W/NW winds, while another larger mid-period W/SW swell is expected to build through Sunday.
This will be generated by a slightly longer-lived and slow moving mid-latitude low through the south-east Indian Ocean over the coming days, with it being better aimed for the northern half of the state, compared to the south.
Still Margs should build to 6-8ft with 3ft sets in Perth but with strong W/SW tending SW winds.
Next week onwards (Oct 10 onwards)
Sunday's swell will ease back slowly through Monday and further Tuesday as winds finally improve.
An offshore SE'ly is expected across Perth Monday morning with easing 2ft+ sets, while Margs will be average early with a S/SW'ly, tending S/SE through the morning then more variable into the afternoon with 6ft sets.
Tuesday will be even cleaner with offshore E'ly winds and smaller fading surf.
Longer term an inconsistent SW groundswell is due later Wednesday and Thursday morning but offshore winds Wednesday will swing light onshore when the swell peaks. We'll have a closer look at this Friday.
