Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 31st August)

Best Days: Protected spots both coasts tomorrow, Perth Friday morning, both coasts Saturday and Sunday mornings

Recap

A window of clean conditions across all coasts yesterday morning with tiny waves around Perth, but a good inconsistent 4-6ft of groundswell in the South West.

Today a secondary pulse of slightly larger groundswell has filled in but conditions were poor across Margs and Mandurah, with early light winds around Perth.

This week and next (Sep 1 - 9)

Remember: TODAY is your LAST CHANCE to win a trip for two to the Banyak Islands. More information here.

The final and largest pulse out of the W/SW due from the storm last week south-east of South Africa is due to fill in this afternoon, easing back from 6ft+ tomorrow morning across the South West with 2ft sets in Perth.

S/SE winds are due across all locations (lighter in the South West) favouring protected locations during the morning ahead of onshore winds into the afternoon.

Friday now looks average with a front clipping the south of the state, bringing onshore W'ly winds to Margs, while Perth should see an early E/NE'ly.

A mix of new W/SW groundswells will be seen to build across the state, generated by a polar low generating pre-frontal severe-gale W/NW winds followed by post-frontal weaker W/SW winds.

Perth should build from 1-2ft through the morning to a more consistent 2ft into the afternoon, with Margs increasing from 4-6ft during the morning, larger into the afternoon.

Of greater importance is the large W/SW groundswell expected on Saturday, generated by a vigorous polar frontal system that's currently weakening in the Heard Island region.

This front has produced a broad and elongated fetch of severe-gale SW winds through our western swell window, producing a large long-period W/SW groundswell for Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

The South West is expected to offer inconsistent 8-10ft+ waves mid-late afternoon Saturday, easing from 8-10ft Sunday morning. Perth should see 2-3ft sets.

A reinforcing large SW groundswell is then due later Sunday and Monday morning from back to back fetches of severe-gale W/NW winds through our south-western swell window.

Large 8-10ft waves are due again across the Margs reefs and 2ft to occasional 3ft sets in Perth, easing through the afternoon and further Tuesday.

Winds on Saturday morning should be variable and conditions OK in the South West, not perfect but good with light offshores around Perth. Sunday morning looks similar but with a lighter E/SE breeze across Margs and then Monday looks a little average as weak onshore SW winds move in.

Longer term another large W/SW groundswell is on the cards for later next week but with average winds. More on this Friday.

A little burgery but otherwise quite tasty across some parts of the Margs coast this AM.
