Average in the South West, cleaner to the north
Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 22nd September)
Best Days: Keen surfers tomorrow and Wednesday morning in the South West, Perth and Gero over the coming days until Friday morning when Gero will be the only option
Recap
The window for clean conditions was short around Margs on Saturday morning as early E/NE winds quickly strengthened from the NE during the morning before backing off but tending more N'ly into the afternoon. Perth saw winds remaining better for longer with good offshore NE winds for exposed spots around Gero.
Sunday was a right-off even with a large building W/SW groundswell with strong N'ly winds before a S'ly change swept up the coast. This opened up protected locations for business in Margs though with the kick in swell.
Today protected locations were again the go in the South West with fresh S/SE winds, while Perth saw OK conditions with a moderate S/SE'ly and Gero was less than ideal. Yesterday's swell backed off but remained large as a reinforcing SW swell filled in behind it.
This week (Sep 23 - 27)
Today's reinforcing SW groundswell should ease into tomorrow with unfavourable but light onshore winds in the South West, while Perth and Gero should see morning offshores from the E/SE and more SE respectively.
Into Wednesday a new SW groundswell is expected ahead of a much larger long-range W/SW groundswell Thursday.
The first swell is being generated by the same frontal system that's generating the second large swell, with it racing ahead of it, hence the increase through Wednesday. The swell isn't due until around midday and by then morning offshore E/NE winds around Gero and Perth are expected to give into weak sea breezes. The South West will unfortunately see lingering W'ly winds ahead of a swing to the NW into the afternoon.
Thursday is looking better with the long-range W/SW groundswell peaking during the morning in the South West and afternoon up at Gero, but winds will again be poor with freshening NW tending W/NW breezes in the South West which will persist from the NW into Friday as the swell eases.
Perth will be a touch better with an early period of variable tending offshore winds before the NW'ly kicks in and then persist Friday. Gero should see better E/SE winds early ahead of SW sea breezes and then variable tending NW winds as the swell eases Friday.
This weekend onwards (Sep 27 onwards)
Unfortunately the weekend is looking poor even with a couple of large swells sources on the cards. A vigorous front linked to one of these is expected to move through Saturday evening with strong pre-frontal NW winds ahead of strong SW winds in its wake. Things should be on the improve into the next week but we'll review this Wednesday.
