Large swell improving Friday, pumping over the weekend
Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 20th June)
Best Days: Tuesday morning, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday
Recap
The weekend started off average with a moderate to large W/SW groundswell and onshore winds in the South West, cross-shore N'ly winds in Perth and Gero.
A large stormy W/SW swell filled in Sunday with protected locations the go around Margs while further north winds were onshore in Perth, but workable and lighter from the SE up at Gero.
Today the swell has started to back off but conditions improved across all coasts with offshore winds developing with 8ft+ surf around Margs, 2-3ft in Perth and the 6ft range up at Gero.
This week (Jun 23 -27)
The weekend's swell should continue to tail off into tomorrow and the early morning will be the best of it (in the South West) with E/NE winds before swinging NW around Margs but going variable to the north.
Late Wednesday's large and powerful W/SW groundswell is still on track with the frontal progression generating the swell moving through the Indian Ocean with strength over the weekend. The system generating the swell is currently breaking down, with the long-period fore-runners due to arrive through Wednesday with a late kick to 10-12ft expected around Margs, 3ft in Perth and 6ft+ up at Gero ahead of a peak early Thursday.
With the peak in swell though, a shorter-range SW swell is due to fill in as a trailing front pushing in from the Indian Ocean intensifies while approaching us.
This will unfortunately bring onshores at the peak of the swell but also kick up another large swell for the afternoon and Friday.
Size wise Margs should see stormy 12ft to occasionally 15ft waves Thursday with 3-4ft+ surf in Perth and 8-10ft waves at exposed reefs in Gero.
Friday is probably the day to surf as winds swing more SE (S/SE around Margs) and ease in the wake of the front generating the secondary large swell, with easing 12ft+ surf in Margs, 3-4ft in Perth and 6ft to occasional 8ft sets up at Gero most of the day.
This weekend onwards (Jun 28 onwards)
Excellent waves are due this weekend as wave heights continue to tail off from Friday under offshore E/NE winds both Saturday and Sunday.
Besides a reinforcing medium sized SW groundswell for next Monday the next sizeable swell is due through Wednesday and Thursday. This is expected to be a longer-range but large W/SW groundswell from the Central Indian Ocean, met with offshore winds Thursday morning, but we'll look at this all again on Wednesday.
