Recap
Yesterday continued in the fun 4ft range across the Surf Coast with 6ft surf to the east, best through the morning before winds really came up strong from the west into the afternoon.
Today we’ve got our large SW groundswell filling in with sets already to 8ft across Bells/Winki under a moderate to fresh offshore wind.
The groundswell component of this swell is due to peak this afternoon with it having quite a bit of longevity, holding well into tomorrow morning. More on this below.
This weekend and next week (Sep 21 - 27)
Today’s large increase in mid-period energy followed by groundwell was generated throughout this week by a strong polar low that projected up slowly towards us, generating severe-gale W/SW winds.
The elongated nature of the system will result in the swell still coming in large tomorrow morning as it eases, with 8ft sets across the Surf Coast magnets early, 10ft to the east along with some smaller, reinforcing mid-period W/SW energy.
Fresh, gusty W/NW winds are due to strengthen through the day tomorrow, favouring the Surf Coast and other protected spots, with Sunday morning seeing fresh to strong W/NW winds all day as the swell settles back to 4-5ft+ on the Surf Coast and 6-8ft to the east.
The low point in swell will only be temporary, with building levels of mid-period W/SW energy again due into Sunday afternoon as the next swell generating low moves in. More consistent sets to 6ft are likely by dark again on the Surf Coast, but come Monday, a larger SW groundswell will be in the water, generated by another great fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds being projected towards us.
Building surf to 6-8ft is due through Monday on the Surf Coast (possibly a touch undersized early), while a secondary, mid-latitude storm racing in towards us on Sunday/Monday should produce a secondary pulse of reinforcing W/SW groundswell Tuesday morning to a similar size, easing into the afternoon.
Locations to the east should come in at 8-10ft at the peak Monday, similar Tuesday morning and winds will ease a touch but remain fresh from the W/NW on Monday morning, easing and shifting W/SW-SW later afternoon, with Tuesday seeing local offshore winds from the N/NW to the west and N/NE to the east, strengthening a little but holding into the afternoon.
This should open up plenty of opportunities for the experienced with the large swell Tuesday morning.
By Wednesday the run will be done, with a trough due to bring a strong S/SW change around dawn, swinging S-S/SE on Thursday as a high moves in and then likely back NE on Friday with moderate amounts of swell. We’ll have a closer look at this on Friday, but in the meantime, make the most of this large swell!

Oh goodie!
G'day Craig - Not doubting your brilliant work, but what's with the discrepancy with the model compared to your notes for Monday - the variance in the model seems a little more off (compared to your notes) than usual?
Trust the notes, fuck the models
Tabby, don't get me wrong, the notes are considered Gospel
Gospel if you get in on the Surf Coast. The MP notes are pretty wobbly. I find a mixture of both (notes and models) and a lot of experience built up after 'hits and misses' gets it closer to the mark. Not a complaint as I'm a happy subscriber just calling it as I find it. They're all valuable data points.
In saying that, I'm heading down the SC this weekend so hope to fill the bag up after a dry MP week.
MP notes are very scratchy. Find they are best combined with weather forecats external to the Swellnet forecast, which is often quite of the mark - especially with wind directions/strengths.
Tabby10.
Totally agree., trust your Forecasters Notes.
Trust Craig’s education and more to the point, experience.
I’m of the opinion they are rarely ever off the money. AW
I find it interesting to note that there is no mention of the dead whale, in the daily 13th reports. The whale is now being smashed to pieces by the swell and high tide and spreading an enormous burley trail. It is a tad irresponsible to fail to mention the distinct possibility of being mistaken for a lump of festering whale blubber and becoming another statistic in the never ending cycle of life.It will be interesting to see who are the first brave souls to paddle out and sample the joys of rotting whale soup and the critters who thrive on it.
I recon if your a charger paddling out there in the next few days, you would already know it’s there. If it was 3 ft and ne they’d mention it I’m sure.
ahhhhh, the nanny state-blame everyone else-take no responsibility mindset, love it…
haha. Swellnet get down there with your high vis and mallets and start punching some warning signs into the ground you useless mugs!! Swellnetcoast Shire.
You'll smell it before you see it anyway. There's your headsup.
I hardly think a small note at the top of the report/notes saying watch out for big, fuckk off, shark attracting dead whale would plunge us deeper into nanny statehood, but I'm a bit soft maybe.
haha probably a fair point. Seriously though, are there no signs down there from the local council saying big fuckoff dead whale? Surely they'd be all over it in such a densely populated area.
Haven't been down there since the BEACHING , but I would guess there are. Didn't even think about that haha. Completely missed signs at Forest Caves a couple of years ago and wondered why it was 3 foot, clean, and empty. Someone advised me once I was back on the beach. Big yikes.
haha. Yep i remember that one. Coincided with a visit to a friends at the point just up the road. Could smell the rotten whale from there and i swear i saw a huge noah just to the east of the point. Walked up and checked out the carcass and can confirm it was leaking into the water right there at FC. Sounds like ignorance was bliss for that one hiccups.
hiccups mate swellnet dedicated a whole article to it
Oh yeah. I meant to say that before. Add that to the massive list of things that slipped my mind today
so much attitude!
we are waiting on a chris stirk original rendering.
he's down there now, trying to get the pinks right.
hahaha!
How was it on the reefs today? Looked busy on the cams but plenty solid.
Shit day to be loser like me stuck on a building site regardless.
Hard work, but there were some sick ones.
looked like it had morning sickness on the cams this morning. then progressivly looked on cams to get into the very good to excellent range. i was l looser stuck on the bulding site today but managed to get in after 2pm. was very raw and unforgiving. breacking wide. sidways rain/seals/dolphins/salmon/car transport ship out the back for 2 hrs with a brocken down engine /wind from wnw-w /storm cells passing through. was hard to get rytham getting waves. snagged 4. very happy. ate maccas for the second time today on the way home
Haha and now your gut must be in a mess.
not too bad considering

That pulse in the hour before dark was pretty crazy.
That be the groundswell proper.
I was at a relatively sheltered reef and and it was the solidest I have seen it. The mix of the medium period swell and the long period swell made what is normally an easy paddle out into a wash through and walk around. I have never seen it like that before! There was virtually no-one out at spots that are normally busy in large swells. 18 second period with 8m peak at Pt Nepean. Must have been huge at Bells on dark, or perhaps it was just the period meant it got in much more to other reefs.
Looks like there’s was an 8 meter rouge wave registered on the pt Nepean bouy around 5pm.
Not even rogue, a few close to it just after!
I was expecting the swell to come in earlier on the Friday. Day started off as a slow wonky broken up 4ft then by lunchtime some 6ft forerunners starting to come in. Then by 3-4pm onwards was when the real juice came in and it was about as big as it gets round here consistent 8ft plus and nice conditions
Picture below of when the swell started to get pretty exciting at 3:30pm
Nice. Yep the morning was all mid-period stuff with the groundswell later.
The sweep was intense non stop paddling, but there where some sick ones
^ agree AW, Craig is poppin, always in tune, and only says what he knows, which is fucktrucks worth. his 'earth whaaa??' editorials are golden. on top, top bloke and dad. Bothered to wish me well for getting a few nice waves in robe during that Deadman's swell. proper human.
Amazed how uncrowded the higher tide was today - locals got sore shoulders?
Couldn’t believe my luck

this one shows a bit more of the grunt it had today 21.9.24
Yea I paddled out just after 1pm and there was still the odd 8fter cleaning up through the bowl
Sick!
All I can say is that I hope you mexicans are enjoying this glut of swell as you deserve it for all the suffering you have injured over the past years . Can anyone recommend a quick drying boardshort that doesn’t chafe your inner upper groin region ?
same price as a fine pair of moleskin strides (highly recommended), but needessentials ultralights work for me. incredible quality @Supa. lifetime quality. https://needessentials.com/collections/boardshorts
Saw these on Sanded

vic notes are the ideal place to talk boardies. use em all the time!
Dbut, today is surely erroneous data at Aireys? Strong NE-N/NE but anything but that across the reefs.
Yeah, the readings are definitely not right. Moderate to strong WNW to NW all morning down this way.
I’d say off inland it was straight northerly but the way these lows pass over bass straight they drag the winds over the sea steering it straight NW on the surf most the time but there’s definently northerly flickers. Something else though as these two winds battle out the tug of war with the land breeze being much weaker the brief void in the wind can be quickly filled in from almost like the SW for brief moments . So even with the strong NW at times because of these differing winds when it changes out the back of the headlands the wind rushes in from the wsw. It’s like the diagram below
Either way it all came together this morning and there were some amazing waves on offer and much more classic than that last run of swell I had a rant about. North-West would be closer to the blue arrow on this part of coast and the way the rooster tails are being pulled to the right in more NNW
pretty sure its been fked since fathers day wind and not repaired. when says ne. but its actually nw.
and the weather station is inland so when over 20knts it goes haywire. has anyway for the last 15-20 years
Was reading ne all wkend I think.
Surfer numbers look good today.
