Recap

Winds were OK in selected regions to the east of Melbourne yesterday morning with fun 3-4ft sets across the beaches, while today we’ve got similar conditions and a bit more size thanks to the arrival of an inconsistent W/SW groundswell.

The Surf Coast was 2ft or so yesterday with a little more size today but with pesky, average south-east winds.

This weekend and next week (Jun 8 - 14)

Following the unfavourable winds and conditions on the Surf Coast the last two days, we’re looking at more variable breezes into tomorrow morning across all regions but with a drop in swell from today.

The Surf Coast looks to ease back from 2ft+ with 4ft sets to the east and winds will remain light until midday before shifting S/SW into the afternoon.

Winds will shift back to the W/NW on Sunday morning, tending back to the S/SW later morning as a trough moves through, but we should see a new fun pulse of mid-period W/SW swell in the water.

The source is a mid-latitude low that formed west of Western Australia, north of our swell window, drifting south-east this morning and more into our western swell window while generating a tight fetch of strong to near gale-force winds.

A fun kick to 2-3ft is due on the Surf Coast with 4-5ft sets to the east, easing back slowly Monday with improving winds. A W/NW tending N/NW and then N breeze is due, with the exposed beaches to the east getting better and better after lunch as winds shift N/NE.

The rest of next week revolves around the merging of a mid-latitude low moving in through the Bight with a strong polar front projecting up from the south-west early-mid week.

The mid-latitude low structure looks poor for swell generation but the polar frontal system should produce a moderate + sized pulse of S/SW groundswell for Thursday, with some loca, low period swell ahead of it on Wednesday as the mid-latitude low moves through.

Local winds don’t look perfect but hopefully doable with a light W/NW breeze Thursday morning, shifting S/SE through the morning and afternoon with a quick shift back to the N/NE on Friday as the swell eases.

Size wise the Surf Coast should peak Thursday to 4-5ft with 6ft+ sets to the east.

The outlook is slower following this swell so try and work around making the most of it. Have a great weekend!

Not a great forecast for this time of the year, but at least it gives us something to look forward to on the Surf Coast and other coasts. After a well below average May and Autumn generally, I am happy to take anything half decent. Doesn't have to be big, just clean and offshore preferably, especially when it's cold.

Looks terrible on the cams today! Hard to see how tomorrow will offer much unless the swell is yet to come in..?

Nothing on the buoys
