Recap
OK waves across the protected reefs on the Surf Coast yesterday morning with a mid-period W/SW swell and W/NW winds, shifting onshore into the afternoon and a write-off across all locations today.
This weekend and next week (May 29 – Jun 4)
While it's unfortunate to be in another lock down, take comfort in that the forecast for the coming period isn't anything too special or exciting at all.
Today's mid-period SW swell which should hold all day, will start to ease through tomorrow, dropping from 2-3ft on the Surf Coast and the 4ft range on the Mornington Peninsula.
Winds will still be an issue though and light to moderate from the S/SE, creating bumpy conditions.
A low point in swell is due Sunday morning but winds should swing offshore out of the N/NE through the morning, tending variable into the afternoon.
Size wise the Mornington Peninsula should be around 3ft, 1-2ft or so on the Surf Coast, but a new, inconsistent and very westerly angled groundswell is due to build through the afternoon.
The source of this swell was a strong though distant and northerly positioned mid-latitude low, moving east through the southern Indian Ocean, and now weakening south-west of Western Australia.
Due to the distance between us and the swell, its alignment and the westerly direction of the swell, it'll be really inconsistent, building Sunday afternoon and likely reaching 4-5ft on the sets late with 2ft sets on the Surf Coast magnets.
Monday will see the swell easing from a similar size under a light to moderate N/NW breeze, tending variable into the afternoon (N/NE on the Mornington Peninsula).
We're now looking at fresher N-N/NE winds developing on Tuesday as a mid-latitude low develops south of WA, stalling through the Bight while slowly weakening early next week.
Size wise the surf will be tiny on the Surf Coast Tuesday, with easing 3ft sets on the Mornington Peninsula.
N/NE winds should persist Wednesday though with a low point in energy early, increasing into the afternoon with the arrival of a new, inconsistent mid-period SW swell.
The source of this swell will be a short-lived polar front firing up east of Heard Island this afternoon, generating a burst of W/SW gales before weakening through tomorrow.
Inconsistent sets to 2ft+ are likely late afternoon on the Surf Coast (3ft sets on the magnets), 3-4ft+ to the east, similar Thursday morning but with a shift in winds to the NW ahead of an afternoon SW change.
This change looks to be ahead of an increase in Southern Ocean frontal activity that at this stage it looks to be less than favourably aligned initially before pulling more into alignment the following weekend.
A great pre-frontal fetch of W/NW gales should generate a good swell for Friday ahead of more activity the following week. Winds look an issue though as high pressure moves in after the fronts, bringing onshore S winds, but more on this Monday. Have a good weekend!

anything to report in port phillip bay within my 5km radius craig?
11 degrees in the water when I swam 4k in the Bay this morning. A lot colder than I expected and with a chilly wind!
ouch !!!. thats head cover hood required temps......im hoping for 14.5°C water...but i know there is plenty of chillier pockets in the bay.
Big effort switch! Are you in a proper swimming / tri wettie for that?
I was doing bay swims through the last extended lockdown but in an old surfing wettie and a hood. Did the job but I was only swimming for about 1.5km.
Gets damn cold in there.
I'll be heading for a bay paddle at some stage over the weekend.
Sunday looks good for those to the east that live near the coast. Get some.
Yep. Looks like a few fitness paddles in the bay for me.
haha yep...the 3/2 ...backpack..and bicycle chained to station pier. its 5k ish to get there on creek trails.
Hey booooysh, pity about URBNSURF shutting down hey. Any surf coast locals know any waves that are similar to @URBNSURF’s expert right over the next coupla days? Keen to get spat out of a couple dozen shlabs round round Torquay the few days. Farken yew!
Fair fee land tubes going down at cypress lane this weekend if u want to get brad pitted. Similar to urban surf but less artificial waves
I'm running my usual lockdown shuttle bus from Flinders St Station to Surfcoast's expert spots for the next 5 days, just give me a message boys and I'll pick you up! I've got limited seating in the 12 seater so let me know soon
Why the fuck would you nutters swim in the bay at this time of year with lockdown... Walk around the fking house if youe desperate for exercise
haha, aint braking any laws or guidelines, only worry is the poo man, flows into the bay through the drains. mostly dog.
As long as you keep swimming in poo city water on you're own I don't care. The city fags that came down to the coast last year nearly spooled it for all surfers
Haha, you'd know.
It's all a bit depressing really. Cold and onshore, poor forecast, lockdown. Autumn was OK but far from classic. Then you see what's happening up North, endless swells, warm and sunny etc. Surely the SC won't endure another Winter like last year. I live in hope.
Well I've managed to precisely time a normal flu (not the bat-pangolin-scientist lergy) with this lockdown so it's around the house for me down here on the coast & my sympathy to the city crew. The young tradie is a whirlwind of energy whipping up fence parts and untiling our kitchen.
From the news footage it looks like a walk around city areas could be good for the soul of those there, given the amount of those thermal/yoga pants other young walkers can be seen wearing.
