Southern Tasmanian Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday February 11th)
Best Days: Tomorrow morning, Sunday morning beaches, Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning
Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)
- Easing W/SW swell tomorrow with variable tending S/SE winds, back to the E/NE late
- Moderate sized W/SW groundswell building Mon with strong but abating S/SW tending S/SE winds, easing Tue with NE tending S/SE winds
- Reinforcing W/SW swell Wed with N tending S/SE winds
Recap
More tiny surf but with favourable conditions for beginners. A new pulse of W/SW swell should be on the build this afternoon but conditions are poor with fresh S/SE sea breezes.
This week and next (Feb 12 - 18)
A weak mid-latitude front moving in from the west the last two days should be kicking sets to 2ft this afternoon/evening across Clifton, with it easing back from 1-2ft tomorrow morning.
Conditions should be clean with a variable breeze, tending SE early afternoon before reverting back to the E/NE-NE later afternoon.
Sunday will be clean but tiny and ideal for beginners.
Moving into early next week and a strong polar low will fire up south-west of us, generating a great fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds.
This will be brief but we should see a good pulse of W/SW groundswell building through Monday and reaching 2-3ft across Clifton, easing from a similar size on Tuesday.
Winds on Monday will unfortunately be onshore as a trough linked to the low moves through, bringing strong S/SW tending weaker S/SE winds into the afternoon, cleaner Tuesday with a NE offshore ahead of S/SE sea breezes.
A secondary front moving in behind the low should generate some reinforcing W/SW swell for Wednesday maintaining 2ft sets across Clifton with morning N'ly winds.
Longer term we've got more action on the cards for later in the week and next weekend as a healthy frontal progression fires up under the country, generating fun pulses of W/SW groundswell Friday through Sunday. More on this in Monday's update though. Have a great weekend!
