Southern Tasmanian Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday January 21st)

Best Days: Beginners tomorrow morning

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Tiny SW swell Sat with N tending S/SE winds
  • Tiny SW swell Wed with S/SE winds

Recap

Small, fun levels of S'ly swell yesterday and today, ideal for beginners this morning with light offshore winds.

This weekend and next week (Jan 22 - 28)

The small pulse of S'ly swell seen the last couple of days will fade into tomorrow, but a tiny pulse of new SW swell is expected from a poorly aligned fetch of strong to gale-force NW winds moving through our swell window.

Tiny 1ft+ waves are expected, ideal for beginners with an early light N'ly ahead of S/SE sea breezes.

The swell will fade on Sunday as winds strengthen from the N/NE tending E/NE.

As touched on the last couple of updates a large, elongated blocking pattern will setup south of the country and then be pushed slightly south by a broad mid-latitude low/trough moving into the Bight and lingering there through the weekend and early next week before pushing slowly east across Victoria late week.

This will suppress the polar storm track leading to a run of tiny to flat conditions. We might see a tiny pulse to 1ft on Wednesday but with S/SE winds as we fall under the southern flank of the low/trough.

Longer term we may see a new run of swell for next weekend, but we'll have a closer look at this Monday. Have a great weekend!
