Small to tiny swells but a couple of better windows
Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 18th October)
Best Days: Sunday selected spots, Wednesday morning, Thursday morning, early Friday
Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)
- Small kick in swell Sunday with light morning winds
- Inconsistent W/SW groundswell for Tuesday/Wednesday
Recap
A continuation of tiny, onshore surf.
This weekend and week (Oct 19 - 24)
The coming period remains mostly slow but we should see some fun waves across Clifton Sunday morning with a light NE breeze. Tomorrow will remain poor and onshore with a W/SW breeze, shifting SW through the day and strengthening.
On Sunday a small mid-period swell should provide small 1-2ft sets for the keen, with afternoon winds freshening from the E/NE, favouring selected spots.
Monday looks to play out similar wind wise with N/NE tending fresher E/NE winds as the swell becomes tiny.
We then look at the new W/SW groundswell due into Tuesday afternoon, and there’s no real change to the size or low generating this swell.
The low is currently east of the Heard Island region, generating a fetch of strong to gale-force W/SW winds through our western swell window. It’ll continue east over the coming days while weakening, with the swell due to arrive Tuesday, building to a peak through the afternoon.
A kick in size to 2ft is due through the afternoon but a trough will unfortunately bring strong S/SW winds from dawn.
The swell should ease Wednesday from 1-2ft with winds swinging back NW, creating fun waves.
Thursday should hold 1-2ft as some fun, reinforcing mid-period W/SW energy moves in from weaker, trailing polar frontal activity. Conditions should be good again with a morning W/NW breeze, tiny Friday with early W/NW winds.
Longer term the outlook remains quiet so try and make the most of the small swell pulses. Have a great weekend!
