Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Ben Matson (issued Tuesday 26th June)

Best Days: No great days.

Recap: Tiny surf persisted through Saturday morning, before building surf and winds on Sunday generated average waves for the South Arm. Monday saw fun leftover surf and light winds, and we’re now on the backside of this pulse with easing size.

The storm track just isn’t favourable for the South Arm at the moment. We’ve had very little activity in our swell window over the last few days, and none is expected in the short term, so we’re looking at small surf for quite some time.

A cut off low and and front in the Bight is riding too north in latitude to benefit our region (though it’ll generate a W/SW swell for SA, Vic and Tasmania’s West Coast). By the time it slides into our swell window - later this week - it’ll be greatly weakened and therefore won’t provide much new energy for the region.

A small polar low south of WA around Fri/Sat may generate some small SW swell for our coasts early next week, otherwise the synoptics don’t really start to develop properly until later in the weekend when we may see a broad consolidation of systems to our west and south-west, generate a better groundswell for the middle of next week. That’s probably the only thing to look forward to at this point in time.

See you Thursday!
