Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 15th September)

Best Days: Protected spots tomorrow, Sunday, Tuesday morning, Wednesday, Thursday

Recap

Building W/SW swell through yesterday, coming in around 2-3ft during the day though with average winds.

The swell has dropped right back into this morning to a small 1.5ft with cleaner conditions.

This week and weekend (Sep 16 – 22)

These notes will be brief as Ben’s away today.

The very intense and tricky low that's forecast to move under us this evening has been upgraded in size and longevity since Wednesday.

This low is currently deepening south-west of us with a tight fetch of severe-gale to storm-force SW winds due to be generated right in our south-western swell window.

This will produce a large SW groundswell for tomorrow morning to 5-6ft across Clifton with fresh to strong W/SW tending SW winds.

The swell is expected to ease into the afternoon, with Sunday coming in much smaller and easing from the 3ft range.

Winds will swing back offshore though with a NW tending NE breeze due.

We then look to the vigorous storm that's due to form in the Southern Ocean south-southwest of WA over the weekend.

This low will sit just within our western swell window, generating a great fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds while tracking slowly east towards us, with a better aligned trailing fetch of polar SW winds.

We should see a moderate sized long-period W/SW groundswell arriving late Monday and peaking Tuesday morning to 3ft on the sets.

The remnants of the storm will move across us during the day though, kicking up a afternoon increase in additional SW swell to 3-4ft but with onshore winds.

Wednesday will be clean again with easing surf from the 3ft range with offshore winds. Longer term there's nothing too significant. Have a great weekend!
