Great S/SE groundswell for Sunday and Monday
Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 19th May)
Best Days: Sunday afternoon and Monday
Recap
A slow start to the day yesterday, but into the afternoon a new S/SW groundswell kicked in, peaking overnight but remaining solid and in the 3ft range this morning. Conditions were great with offshore winds, and variable winds have now developed into this afternoon
This weekend and next week (May 20 – 26)
This morning's S/SW groundswell will ease this afternoon, back further from 1-2ft tomorrow morning. Conditions will be average with E/NE winds persisting all day tomorrow, favouring spots other than Clifton.
A low point in swell is expected Sunday morning, but a strong new S/SE groundswell will fill in through the afternoon, peaking Monday morning.
This swell is currently being produced by a vigorous polar low that's currently south of New Zealand, with a great looking fetch of gale to severe-gale S'ly winds through our south-eastern swell window.
A strong long-period S/SE groundswell should build Sunday, reaching 3-4ft across Clifton later in the day, with similar 3-4ft+ waves Monday morning, easing into the afternoon, down further from 1-2ft Tuesday.
More exposed breaks to the south-east should see more size, especially our East Coast as well.
Winds on Sunday look great with a N/NW offshore expected all day, and NW tending N'ly winds Monday.
Longer term we've got nothing major on the cards until later next week as mid-latitude frontal activity under the country sits too far north and out of our swell window.
Therefore make the most of the coming S/SE groundswell event.
