Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 17th March)

Best Days: Dawn Monday keen surfers

Recap

Tiny to flat conditions yesterday, while a tiny bump in swell was seen today to 1ft, great for beginners.

This weekend and next week (Mar 18 - 24)

The weekend won't provide any love in the surf department with tiny but clean fading waves tomorrow, near flat Sunday morning.

As touched on the last update, a very inconsistent W/SW groundswell may be seen later Sunday to 1-1.5ft but sea breezes will be in by then.

The better swell for Monday was generated in our far swell window east of Heard Island, and satellite observations of the swell producing fetch are good.

A very infrequent 1-2ft wave is due Monday but besides a dawn variable wind, a S/SE change looks to move through soon after, creating poor conditions.

Tuesday looks to remain poor with S'ly winds persisting as the swell eases.

The stronger SW groundswell talked about last update is still on track, with a vigorous polar low moving through our swell window Sunday and Monday.

A fetch of severe-gale to storm-force winds should produce a good SW groundswell for Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.

The swell should kick to 2ft by dark with 2-3ft sets Thursday morning. The only issue is local winds and they look to be fresh onshore from the S/SW due to a deepening surface trough off the East Coast.

Hopefully this changes on Monday, but check back then for an update. Have a great weekend!
