Small swells this week
Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 19th December)
Best Days: Tuesday, Wednesday mid-late afternoon, Thursday morning
Recap
Tiny 1-1.5ft waves to kick off Saturday, while a mix of swells came in Sunday to 2ft along with a workable offshore wind in the morning.
Today the size is way above expectations with larger 3-4ft sets reported on the coast.
There must have been a really well aligned fetch of trailing severe-gale S/SW winds on the backside of the low passing under us. Conditions were great but the swell too big for most spots, better this afternoon.
This week (Dec 20 - 23)
Today's swell from the backside of the low is expected to ease off into tomorrow, but a lingering S/SE signal to 1-2ft may be seen.
Offshore W/NW winds are due all day, with a cold front passing through early Wednesday morning.
This front will be linked to a mid-latitude front passing under us, generating a fetch of strong W/SW winds through our western swell window.
A small kick in swell is expected, reaching 2ft through Wednesday but with onshore W/SW winds.
We'll probably see winds tend back W/NW mid-late afternoon, offering good conditions for the late session.
Thursday then looks small and easing from 1-2ft with an early W/NW breeze.
For the rest of the period unfortunately there's nothing too major on the cards with tiny levels of background W/SW groundswell from the Southern Ocean due.
We'll have a closer look at this Wednesday though.
