Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 22nd May)

Best Days: Saturday morning, Sunday, early Monday, Tuesday for an inconsistent SE groundswell

Recap

Onshore and average 3ft waves yesterday morning ahead of a strong kick in groundswell through the afternoon but with poor conditions. Today the swell was easing from the 3ft range with cleaner conditions through the morning. Winds have since gone onshore creating average conditions.

This week (May 23 - 24)

A new SW groundswell due tomorrow to the 3ft range is then expected to ease back through the afternoon and further from 2ft into Sunday and 1-2ft Monday.

Winds will be good again tomorrow morning and offshore from the W/NW before shifting W/SW into the afternoon. Sunday should see all day offshore winds from the NW, tending W/NW.

Next week onwards (May 25 onwards)

With the swell continuing to ease Monday, conditions should remain clean with a NW tending variable breeze.

Into Tuesday a funky SE groundswell is due across the coast, generated on the back of the frontal progression generating the weekend's swell, to the south-southwest of New Zealand.

A fetch of severe-gale to storm-force S/SE winds will be projected north towards New Zealand, just on the edge of our swell window, producing a very inconsistent but fun SE groundswell for Tuesday 2ft+ across Clifton with larger sets at south-east facing breaks. Winds look good and from the NW tending NE.

Beyond this Wednesday's inconsistent and small W/SW groundswell has been downgraded with only 1ft or so of swell expected, but at the end of the week and weekend we should see some better W/SW groundswell impacting the state. This will be related to a strong node of the Long Wave Trough moving in from the west. More on this Monday though. Have a great weekend!
