Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 1st May)

Best Days: Saturday morning, Tuesday for keen surfers, but expect long waits between sets, Thursday, Friday

Recap

Small fun waves hanging around the 2ft range yesterday and today with favourable winds. A new SW pulse is due this afternoon with some bigger sets expected into the evening.

This weekend and next week (May 2 - 8)

This afternoon's kick in SW groundswell is due to back off through tomorrow with 2ft sets early, becoming tiny into Sunday.

From then there's nothing major on the cards until later next week.

A very inconsistent long-range W/SW groundswell is due through Tuesday, reaching 1-2ft across Clifton through the day but with it being generated south-west of WA, there'll be extremely long waits between sets.

From Thursday the Long Wave Trough will move into a more favourable position for us, strengthening a vigorous polar frontal system to our south-west. This system should aim a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds through our western swell window, generating a strong W/SW groundswell that should build Thursday, peak overnight and ease Friday.

Clifton should kick to the 5-6ft range later Thursday but with onshore winds before easing rapidly from 4-6ft Friday morning under W/NW tending NW winds.

We're then likely to see another strong but smaller swell for next weekend/week, but more on this Monday. Have a great weekend!
