Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 27th March)

Best Days: Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

Recap

A good pulse of inconsistent SW groundswell filled in yesterday with funky variable winds and torrential rain which cleared through the day. Today a mix of groundswell and windswell were coming in at 2-3ft again and conditions were good early before a strong onshore change moved in mid-morning.

This weekend (Mar 28 - 29)

The surf should hold around the 2ft range across Clifton tomorrow as a reinforcing SW groundswell from a fetch of W/NW gales fills in. Conditions are looking good all day with a NW tending W/NW breeze expected.

Come Sunday only a small 1ft to maybe 2ft wave is due under fresh N/NW winds ahead of a W/SW change around midday.

With this change we're likely to see a late increase in size, but Monday and more so Tuesday will provide much more action across the coast.

Next week onwards (Mar 30 onwards)

As touched on last update, a couple of vigorous but fast tracking frontal systems are due to push in from the west over the weekend. The first has already developed south-west of WA and will race west tomorrow and push across us Sunday while aiming a fetch of gale to severe-gale W/SW winds through our swell window.

Clifton is only expected to see 2ft+ or so of swell from this first front, peaking Monday morning and easing through the day. Winds look good and offshore from the NW tending W/NW.

The secondary front will push in with a touch more strength over the already active sea state, but with a slightly unfavourable E/SE track. Still we should see this generate a stronger W/SW groundswell for Tuesday, peaking at a good 3ft across Clifton under N/NW tending variable winds, with sea breezes a slight possibility.

The swell will drop quickly into Wednesday from 2ft or so as offshore winds persist from the N/NW.

Into the end of next week there's nothing significant on the cards, so make the most of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday's swells.

Longer term we may see some better swell activity into the week starting Easter Monday, but more on this in the next update. Have a great weekend!
