Southern Tasmania Forecast (issued Friday 19th September)

Best Days: Saturday and Sunday mornings, later Tuesday, Wednesday morning, Thursday

Recap

The surf lifted to 2ft yesterday and persisted at a similar size today but conditions were poor with onshore winds. There's better conditions to come over the weekend.

This weekend (Sep 20 - 21)

The surf should drop back to a small 1-2ft through tomorrow but conditions will be better with a morning W/NW'ly ahead of a swing back to the W/SW through the afternoon.

The swell will hold in the 1-2ft range through the afternoon as a new long-range SW groundswell moves in, peaking Sunday to a better 2ft across Clifton before dropping into the afternoon.

Winds should be OK and offshore from the W/NW again early before shifting quickly to the W/SW through the late morning.

Next week onwards (Sep 22 onwards)

Sunday's SW groundswell will drop through Monday but winds will be better and offshore from the NW, tending variable into the afternoon.

The next decent increase in swell is due Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, generated by a deepening polar low to our south-west on Sunday.

This should produce a short-lived fetch of severe-gale W/SW winds through our swell window, kicking up 2ft+ of SW groundswell for Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

Winds on Tuesday should be great all day with a NW tending W/NW breeze, while early NW winds on Wednesday are expected to tend variable and then NE into the afternoon.

A secondary reinforcing SW groundswell is due Thursday to a better 2-3ft, generated by strong polar frontal activity on the back of the initial low. Conditions should be excellent with a persistent N/NW breeze opening up plenty of options.

Longer term we may see some better polar frontal activity into the end of the week, bringing swell for next weekend, but we'll review this Monday. Have a great weekend!
