Best Days: No great days. If you can handle the N'ly chop there'll be bumpy NE wind waves best Sun and Mon. Also, there's a chance for a small E'ly swell later next week and into the weekend. But there's also a chance that N'ly winds will spoil it too.
Recap: Small swells and northerly winds have not allowed much surf potential over the last few days. A building NE windswell is increasing wave heights at exposed beaches but quality is low.
Building NE windswell at D'Bah this arvo.
This weekend (Dec 3rd - Dec 4th)
There’s really not much to say about the weekend forecast.
Fresh northerly winds will persist both days across all coasts, creating poor conditions at most beaches, exacerbated by a lack of groundswell.
The one positive is that winds will slowly strengthen through Saturday so Sunday should see a decent peak with 3ft sets across exposed NE facing beaches, though quality will be hard to find. Elsewhere, protected northern corners will be smaller, as will the Sunshine Coast due to a shorter fetch length.
N’ly windswells have a habit of producing an erratic spread of surfable options so don’t get your hopes up this weekend for decent waves anywhere, but if you keep an eye on the local winds and pounce when there’s a whiff of nor’west in the northerly breeze, then you may score some runners down the back beaches that offer some protection.
There’ll be some small underlying east swell in the mix both days but with these winds, does it really matter?
Next week (Dec 5th onwards)
Small local swells and northerly winds will persist through Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (in SE Qld) whilst a shallow trough will move into the Mid North Coast during Wednesday, offering a mild mid-week southerly change.
Light winds and sea breezes are then expected across all regions on Thursday ahead of a return to northerlies next Friday and into the weekend.
Broadly speaking, the surf outlook for the longer term period is terrible.
However, there are a couple of regions to keep a watch on.
First up, a closed low is expected to form within a surface trough off the Southern/Central NSW coast around Tuesday, before this system tracks out into the central Tasman Sea. It doesn’t look like much of a swell producer right now - mainly due to the unfavourable easterly track - but if the models slow or stall this pattern, we could see some easterly swell potential mid-late week.
Otherwise, the other area of interest I’ll be keeping a close eye on is a small easterly dip south of Fiji around Monday, which is expected to remain slow moving through the week as it broadens an easterly fetch to the south. This has the potential to set up a useful easterly swell later next week and into the weekend - early ballpark 2-3ft sets - but I’ll have more on that in Monday’s update.
Have a great weekend!

Still trying to work out whether I appreciate the brutal honesty here Ben.
Me too!
The Simpsons to Star Wars...it's a big step backwards in headlines... :)
Thumbs up for title of forecast notes!
It's helps having a laugh before reading how bad the surf is going to be
The BEST thing about Swellnet is the honesty.
Lay it on thick.
Comments, opinion pieces, surf forecasts.
Too long we've endured the doctored thoughts of the surf media and the mythology of the surf corps.
OR.....you can go the way of Coastalwatch and put up puff pieces of sponsored advertorial and run photos of obvious closeouts and caption it as empty perfection as though their readership are fucking morons.....which come to think of it, they just might be.
Long live Swellnet's impartiality.
Except we're all partial to a nice pit or three...
Dislocated my shoulder in the Ments in June and have been out of the water since ... but haven't missed much apart from the odd day here and there and last week. Let's hope it changes gears for you fellas soon. Keep up the great work gents!
Whilst it's not great, things could be much worse. Having lived in Perth the last few years, summers trapped in the city can be pretty depressing - you'd be celebrating a forecast like this one, with at least the chance of some small early morning waves (and every man and his dog would be out enjoying it). Still hoping for some good waves soon. Thanks for the notes again Ben!
it's offshore on the flathead, they love these hard core northerlies.
Got half a dozen this arvo with the wind at my back, heaven.
remember, the water is warmer on the outgoing tide during ekman transport events.
Best tasting fish in the sea
Agreed. That and Coral Trout.
That's a sly little tip for those flathead fishoes.
Nicely done.
Warmer water =more active fish.
I thought the flatties were laid up to mate at the deep channels / inlets this time of year ?
They bite hard at this stage ?
They are one fish I'd like to get into .
skinned boned and dowsed in a light beer batter.....not light beer.
this spring has been epic for refining my flathead game.
Try flour, salt and cold soda water, nothing else. Don't mix up too much so the flour is still kind of lumpy and don't let it sit, use it straight away.
Flathead fillets Tempura.
Trust me.
Agree, Cant stress enough that it must be icy cold and done immediately before cooking. Its the contrast in temperature between the chilled lumpy batter and hot (180c) oil that gives it its light & crunchy clean tasting batter. If the batter sits for more than a minute or 2 it'll go flat and lifeless!!
Best tasting fish in the sea ?
We've got to go fishing some time Goofy.
You'll shit yourself when you chow on a baldie.
That's not a rude thing to say in WA.
umm maybe best tasting fish in Port Phillip Bay then???
1: King George.
2: Gummy
3: Flathead
Free ride - lures or livies ?
In PPB?
Nah, they're top 3, but flatty is my fave.
Flatty fillets on the barbie, ice cold coopers pale, doesn't get better
I'm Sold Goofy.
What time you cranking up the barbie ?
I'll bring the coopers.
all soft plastics Blowin.....mostly 4 inch curl tail grubs.
this old bloke at the dump let slip this spot where he said they were lined up like sardines on the bottom......and it was true.
I in the Port area freeride?
Bruns to Ballina Bruz
I used to fly--fish for flattie in the broadwater. Just walk along the edges and work my way around.
Great sport and kind of meditative at the same time.
Agreed will try that tempura batter tonight Zen.
You ever tried making your own soft plastics Freeride ?
Today on Fishnet "Episode V" we'll show you how to forget about the lackluster surf conditions , get totally of sidetracked and also at the same time have every fishermen also praying to Huey for meaningful swell........ Tune back in Monday to see if there will be any sign in the forecast that may indicate a return to normal numbers of fishers at your local estuary...... lol
All this fish talk... I'd rather pursue other interests that lead to a fish smell.
Surprised at the light variable breeze this morning. I have a feeling yesterday's broad, intense thunderstorm activity affected the coastal margin (disrupting the synoptic northerly) way more than expected. Which has in turn affected surf size from the local fetch. Still, The Pass is pulling in a few small clean waves this morning.
